looks like mick was correct below. denon has put an adjustable crossover on their new 4802. marantz on the other hand is still clueless with their new models.

marantz makes some warm & fuzzy amps, but as a business they suck.
very arrogant mentality. pay no attention to what consumers
want. well looks like with their new units they're trying to catch up with denon now.

none of the new denons nor marantz can be found at this joke
of a site. no cedia 2001 coverage.
makes me think no one on here can afford any new units. of course once they're obsolete & cheap enough, then we'll see all the biased reviews.

Strength:

VERY MUSICAL. HDAMs, Cooper shielding chassis and more...

Weakness:

Stereo mode could need more power

The SR-8000 sounds pretty good! I bought this AV for 2 reasons: 1) to listen to music most of the time 2) to watch movie by DVD in 5.1 channel mode. The warm and musical sound of this AV is very close to my cousin's old Nad 3155, except the Nad has more power in stereo mode. I also like the tuner part of it. I have it hooked up with my Boston Acoutic VR-M50s. Together they amaze me! FYI - Marantz has discontinued this model, so if you want to buy this AV, you need to move very quickly...this is a much better AV than the SR-7000 (by design) if you are thinking of the Marantz AV line.

First I dissagree with Mike on bass mgmt. I've set this amp with a sound meter to flat with fronts on large and on small. It's sounds great either way but I prefer all on small and sub to pick up the bass. I have JBL Ti's for the fronts which can go down under 30hz's. You still get a better overall sound when setting small.

I called Marantz and the tech there said the crossover works two ways when you set the fronts to Large the crossover is 100hz and when you set the fronts to small it's 80hz, anyway the sound was great either way. Smooth tight bass. I've had three models of Marantz receivers at home and all have been great for Music and Home Theater. I use to think Yamaha was good but since have discovered Marantz. :)

Weakness:

The manual. DSP modes Hall, matrix, movie

This is my first reciever that I have ever had that really made me fell like I got my monies worth. I listen to alot of jazz and this receiver handels ever sound with perfect reprodution.I had never really listened to music in direct mode but thanks to this unit I do now. I really love the five channel stereo mode also. The remote control unit does everthing except the dishes and I'm working on that.
The only semi bad things about this unit is 1. the DSP modes
Hall,Matrix and Movie but, I never have really listen to those features anyway. and unfortunatly the day I went to buythis receiver I made the mistake of listening to the
SR8000's big brother theSR19ex so ofcourse in about six months i;m going to trade up for that model.
All in all I would highly recomend this receiver to anyone in the market for a good unit around a$grand$.
My system consist of
Marantz SR8000..receiver
Toshiba SD2200..DVD
Sony KV-36FV26..TV
Klipsch RF-3's..Fronts
Klipsch RC-3..Center
klipsch SR-3's..Surounds
Although I did not mention it I would like to give thumbs up to the movie audio play back as well. (5.1& DTS).
But I do give the egde to music play back.

Strength:

Quality build, detailed 2 channel audio, Great Remote!!!

Weakness:

Bass management is debateable akthough not a problem for me.

I won't repeat the 5 channel praises for home theater. They are well documented by other users and I agree with all.

The remote control is one of the best I've ever seen or used. It's replaced my $400 Harmon Kardon / Microsoft "Take Control" RC and I like it even better (much better).

What really astonished me about this receiver is the 2 channel audio. I've been running a pair of "big old Cornwalls" for about 20 years now. Previously on a 70 watt Technics New Class A integrated amplifier. Klipsch Cornwalls (& other horn loaded spekaers) are notorious for having a harsh top end. Some recordings sound great but many are not listenable at loud levels. They are, however, marvelously efficient requiring only 32 watts to crank out 116 db of sound. This Marantz SR 8000 is one remarkale match for my Cornwalls. All hints of harshness are gone. The sound is warm, well defined and detailed. It has single handedly brought my Cornwalls back to life. I noticed some complaints about a lack of power in 2 channel mode. That's certainly not my experience. There's more than enough power for Cornwalls. Even at VERY VERY loud levels, this amp is a pleasure to listen to and cranks out any music style effortlessly. Bass is tight and well defined, human voices are believeable and real. Instruments sound clear without sharness and piano is absolutely remarkable. Seperation and definition are superb. Detailing, realism and musicallity is very VERY impressive. Cornwalls sound very dynamic and lifelike. The detailing is so impressive that even during instumental "outbursts" individual instruments remain well defined (anything but chaoitic). Dimenionality (depth of soundstage) could be better, however, speaker placemnt and the listening environment have a dramatic effect on this. I found slight adjustments in spekaer placement made all the difference. Overall I am thrilled with how this amp matches the horn loaded efficiency of Klipsch Cornwalls.

Do I like this receiver. NO, I LOVE this receiver and so do my Cornwalls. Hats off to Marantz for one fine piece of equipment.

Strength:

Very Solid Build! Completely copper sheilded, Clean look - no clutter on faceplate, back panel inputs and outputs VERY cleanly designed.

Weakness:

didn't come with an RC5000 remote.

This amplifier is built like a tank (in a good sense of course). I compared this unit to the models I listed above, and the SR8000 was the cleanest sounding receiver ive ever heard. A good way to explain this is if you were to turn the volume up very high but with no music playing. Usually you will eventually start to hear a hiss come from your speakers. This is entirely normal, but the SR8000 doesn’t hiss until the volume is cranked way up to +15DB and even then it’s hardly noticeable. Electrically speaking this piece has got to be the "quietest"; there is simply NO interference problems. The bottom and read panel are completely coated in Copper (part of their HDAM process); let me tell you, it’s stunning to look at. The rear panel is the most organized and labeled of all the receivers I compared, very clean layout.
I upgraded from a Marantz SR880mrkII, and yes there is an amazing difference in performance and sound. Its much more powerful, has a much more controlled bass management system, and with regards to functionality is a much smarter layout. This unit does not have RE-EQ, but instead has there own TH-EQ. From what I understand, this does the same thing as Lucas Films RE-EQ. It has a simple selection of DSP fields; Movie; Hall; Matrix; 5 channel stereo; Dolby Pro-Logic; and of course Dolby Digital and DTS. 5-channel stereo is amazing! To my surprise it also has a Digital output (which is extremely nice if you have a CD-R or a Sony Mini-Disk player). The nice things is that it has both Coax Digital Output and Optical Digital Output. Has both 6 channel inputs and outputs. Full S-video to Composite video switching. This receiver is one of the best ive seen; the others that I compared it to could not match its power and especially its cleanliness (both physical and electrical).

Strength:

Incredibly clean power. Intuitive hook-up and user
interface. Remote control better than any I have ever
used. Dolby pro-logic and digital that is cleaner
than any system I ever owned or listened to in or
near this price range.

Weakness:

No phono input. (not a big deal)

I had initially purchased a HK-AVR-500 based on claims
that it was the receiver that corrected all the flaws
people complained about with the HK-AVR-65. The AVR-500
was more about marketing than it was on solid, well
built product. The remote was by far the worst I have
ever seen. It is clear that HK didn't do any usability
studies on this product. 'nuff said.

I returned the AVR-500 and was planning to replace it
with the Marantz-880. This model is being discontinued
(I think) and replaced with the SR-8000. The store had
one in stock and I purchased it without listening to
it based on what I had read in the product literature.
I know this is not the wisest thing to do but the 880
had nothing but good said about it I was going on the
fact that this would be as good or better. Worst case,
the store would have taken it back and I would have
purchased something else.

I hooked this product up and have been amazed and
continually impressed. Music sounds incredible. The
amplifiers have plenty of power and product nothing
but clean sound with plenty of punch. Whether at low
volume or cranked up, this system rocks. Jazz, Metal,
Classical, you name it. This system makes it sound
sweet.

I played with the Dolby Pro-Logic first to see how
this sounded compared the the Carver Amp/Onkyo Processor
it was replacing. Again, amazing. The separation
of sound is fantastic. The setup was straight forward
and easy to balance out. Far superior to the system
it replaced.

I hooked up a DVD player and was blown away. Wow.

This system has more inputs and outputs than I need
at present. I do wish it had a phono input but I can
achieve this with a pre-amp and use the aux input.

If you are considering any other machine in this price
range give the Marantz a serious look. It does
everything extremely well. I'd be surprised if you
regretted this puurchase. I have not yet and doubt
I will.
