Got this for under 150 used and it is a great product for that money way better then any thing that would go for anything under 500.00 new price today.

Does everything well with plenty of power was a bit bright sounding at first but after a while it smoothed out and sounds good I would recommend it to anyone who wants to build a good system for a low price.

Great Tuner : clean, powerful, crisp. Many features. Solidly built. Great remote too that uses only 2 AAA size batteries as compared to Yamaha RXV 396 which uses 4 AAA batteries for such a puny remote.

Wish it has 5.1 input for upgrade with external DTS decoder. Possible with DVD player with built-in DTS decoder ?

Just bought it last week and initial tests revealed great tuner section. Powerful pulling power and very clean reception without hisses and buzzes which are quite common in my area as with my Sony STR V55ES and I paid USD 884 for that one. Surpringly, music sounds better with my old very basic Philips DVD player with MIT av cable than through analogue interconnects with my old very basic Pioneer CD player. Probably because the cables used for the CD are not of high quality. Partially tested Dolby Digital but only in 2.0 Surround. Not bad but lacks the finesse of the Sony ( but then, the technology is 3 years ahead although when first launched, the SR880 was much more expensive comparatively). Can't wait to go full 5.1 when I get my hands on centre and rear speakers at the AV show this weekend. Currently using MB Quart 20LC as fronts and PSB Alpha 5 subwoofers.The SR880 was bought as ancillary HT set-up and is only meant for the bedroom.Main use is for the radio and for that it deserves top marks. Will write second part of review after testing full 5.1 sound.

the 880 is a great receiver but somewhat aged - it has no dts processor (somewhat a curse and blessing?) and many of the now-current flock of component inputs, but overall, performs very well on dolby digital-encoded dvd's. basic stereo performance (two-channel) is fantastic and for those who wish for multichannel music, the quality (in the various "dsp" modes) is top-notch.

the system and setup are very easy to use and the included rc2000 is one of the most renowned and convenient remote controls ever made. typical high level marantz build and quality and above all, it sounds GRAND. plus, the receiver will drive just about any speaker with ease.

probably could get one cheap nowadays anyhow ($500 or so), so people, take full advantage!

LOOKING AT BUYING A MARANTZ SR-882. CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ON IT AT ALL. PLEASE HELP.

This is a steal of a unit works well for 2 channel and has all the inputs you need for HT.

My friend bought a Marantz 880 and its companion AC3 decoder. Given that this is an audio/video reciever, I have to give this product mixed reviews.
The receiver is very easy to setup and use. There are plenty of facilities for switching video. The remote control is easy to use. The receiver offers and array of features.

If this receiver is used primarily for movies, it represents a nice product. If the purchaser hopes to use this music as a combination auido/video system, this product doesn't offer quite the level of audio performance most people would consider "high-end". In fact, I personally (and my friend did as well) find this unit rather hard to listen to. The amplifier is bright and harsh.

My friend used the receiver as a preamp/processor and suplimented the unit with a better amplifier. Even with this adjustment, the receiver still proved itself weak for center and rear amplification.

The AC3 processor is more an afterthought than an intergrated unit. The decoding works just fine. The problem is intergration rather than application.

I don't know whether or not the Marantz compares well against other A/V receivers. However, compared to even modest integrated amplifiers, I find the unit sonically weak.

I bought an SR880 about 6 months ago and am still finding great things about it. I was very hesitant to go with a home theater receiver since audio listening was always my main concern. Wow, to use this as a pre amp/processor, it easily matches the quality of my Sumo (class A) pre amp. And, when using it with my Threshold 400 amp, I can't complain about the sound at all. I now have a Class A home theater!
There are more than enough inputs/outputs and the remote has endless capabilities. The 2000 remote with macros and hundreds of programming options is fabulous. I have had to learn a lot on my own about how to work everything though. The Marantz manual is poor to say the least.

I don't know how Marantz can package so much into one box but, they do it very well. Even the built in amplification is clean, smooth, warm and packs enough punch for anything short of a full blown theater. I looked at the Denon, Yamaha and Onkyo when I bought this. The Denon 3600 was the only other one that was acceptable for music. I had three reasons for chosing this over the Denon: power, flexibility through multiple hook-ups and the 2000 remote. The Yamaha and Onkyo were over-equalized, bright and even more complicated complicated.

If I had it to do over agian, I would gladly buy this unit. And since I bought it used for about 40% off, it was really worth it. If I could ask Marantz for several improvements, they would be: A better manual and make it 1 inch less deep to fit into standard cabinets.

In response to the other reviews, I have never found the sound to be harsh. Try different speakers. I don't know why Marantz didn't make this THX certified with re-eq. But, In comparision to the other Marantz models, it has something on each one of them, power, features, remote etc...

Only has 2 S-Video inputs.

Sounds great, with both video and audio performance up to Marantz standards. I do not find the sound harsh, though my budget has limited my experience with big buck receivers. It does have only 2 S Video inputs, which may be a problem for some. It has 3 digital inputs (AC 3 RF, AC 3 co-ax, AC 3 Optical). It comes with a great remote that has a 3 year warranty and will program mucho.It has been discontinued, I think, and you may be able to it for a good price. List is $1500, I got a demo for $1000 and do not regret spending the dough.
