Strength:

Bass really powerful and distinct. Stereo images is good. Midband is ok.

Weakness:

The prime negative comment is the the treble - on higher volume, it cuts like knifes. "essssses" (Note that speakers "QLN606" has a dark character. The radio handling is more or less stupid - why the "tuning mode" button for some stations and only step choices for changing stations. Otherwise, bad remote and poor quality on some buttons.

Good but unlogic machine. The bass, power and dynamic makes the shortcomings less annoying. I am confused about the comments about "sweet treble". Not on my machine !!

Strength:

- sound quality !!! - service. I wish I'd be always serviced like that by "bigger names" in this industry ;-) - price/performance - if you don't mind connectivity, setup and certain "user interface" shortcommings

Weakness:

- no 5.1 input! - average build (occasionally leading to problems)

Sound quality When it comes to straight stereo, it just exceeded everyting I've expected. I got to admit that I didn't hear any true "high-end" HiFi, but this one is better than any dedicated stereo budget/mid-priced amps I've listened to before. Tight bass, sweet treble, open, intelligible mids, power to spare etc. A very good (again, compared to the stuff like Pioneer DV 717) DAC. Add the convenience of a fuss-free "home theater" use (where my former Yamaha A595a was good as well, but completely in a different league sonically), and I would certainly buy it again, even for more than I actually paid. Can't say much about specific "home theater" qualities - it just sounds - for us, that is - good with movies too. Setup/functionality Well, it does not have the same toys as even the aforementioned Yamaha A595a, but honestly I don't care. Compared to Yamaha's modes, which quickly fell off grace with us, the AV10's "natural" mode is really being used. And the learning remote is also used. Installation is straightforward (and you don't need OSD with it), even though, agruably, in some setups the options may be insufficient (read professional reviews for that). I have two complains: output level jumps when you switch between "straight" stereo and DSP modes (which is a nuisance), and there are no 5.1 inputs, which can become a real problem in the future (well, I *already* have some Stones on SACD ;-)). Build quality On the outside it is pretty substantial and good-looking (and heavy), but I would say nothing exceptional. On the inside (under the hood) - not very good at all, given the retail price tag: I'd wish some electro-magnitic shielding (given that it has DAC, auxiliary digital (display panel, remote etc.), and video switching circuits), better cables (I've seen better ones even in a Technics, albeit a pretty old one - the more modern ones may be worse too ;-), and not very tidy when it comes to assembly. Toroidal transformers, and probably some more filtering caps in the power supply would do some good as well. Also, a better quality cooling fan would be wise too (but that can be easily fixed "DIY"). Actually, I did have another complain that was fortunately quickly resolved: the amp produced noticeable buzz alreay at listening levels, which in the end turned out to be assembly-related (see below). Service It DID exist, at least for me!! When I got the problem just described, I felt pity because it did mean some serious reverse-engineering (oh why don't we get the principle electrical schemes these days??!) and research. I suspected just grounding problems and interferences due to poor cabling, because I just could not admit that the problem did exist when the thing was designed and its mock-up was tested. Then, very sceptical of the outcome, in particular since I mail-ordered the unit from the UK while living in Sweden, I e-mailed both the UK and US Nakamichi offices describing the problem and asking how can I fix it DIY. AND I did get replies! A person from the UK office just told me what I have to do (bend and pull apart some cables, that's it - damn interference! :-)) Needles to say, I was very pleasantly surprised! My setup.. Pioneer DV 717 (for audio used only as the transport) Nakamichi AV10 Yamaha NS200 main speakers (bi-wired) Oehlbach speaker and audio cables Over the years I heard a lot of usual Pioneer/Sony/Denon/Yamaha etc. mass-market stuff..

Strength:

Awesome sound, plenty of power. clean look. Great remote control.

Weakness:

IT puts me to sleep like a baby.. and i can't wake up for work on time :-)

Great reciever. Has enough juice to power a city block. When i first purchase the av10 on ebay i was afraid it wouldn't be powerful enough to run my paradigms. My fear quickly went away as the av10 pushes my speakers to the next level. My old setup was a panasonic HT400(230$)cheap reciever which came with even cheaper throw away surround speakers. I am now able to hear much more from my speakers seperation is awesome, bass tighter and the highs are very smooth. This amp does wonders for music compare to the panasonic which produce muddy bass and terrible sharp highs. Music seems to be much fuller now. The av10 is also great for Home theater i am able to pick up background details which i never knew existed before. The av10 also has a very smart remote control which truly program all your other devices not like the cheap RCA programable remotes. This is a great amp for both music and HT.

Strength:

Power and sonic clarity.

Weakness:

Poor construction. The connects on the backside come off when you pull the cable off! The quality of Nacamichi's products has declined.

Hey, Bibby B, could you post the information or the weblink to convert the 5.1 pre-out jacks to input jacks for use with a DVD-Audio player. Would be most helpful. Or send me a email message by clicking on my review name, which Audioreview.com will then allow you send an email to me. Thanks. Like most other review here I agree this is a very good sounding A/V receiver and more power than I would ever need. It doesn't have many features, but I like my money going towards better sound production versus extra features. The one thing I didn't like was the remote volume control. A quick tap on the button would produce a greater change in volume than what I wanted. Inside the unit is the electric motor that turns the volume knob when a remote volume button is pushed. I inserted a pot into one the wires to the motor. Then I adjusted the pot so now a tap on the volume button produces only half of the original volume change. Works for me.

Strength:

Powerful. Excelent music reproduction, good looks, Sounds great with movies or music. ROCKS my house

Weakness:

Got to be kidding for less than 700.00 it is awsome

My old separable system died on me and I decided to go with an A/V receiver. After trying a few A/V receivers from a local Denon dealer and hearing other receivers I was very disappointed with music reproduction. After reading countless reviews and searching news groups for information I decided on the AV-10. I found one on Ebay and won the bid, I could not wait for it to arrive. It has to be one the best audio pieces that I have purchased. Tight bass, more power than I can use in my large living room. It is powering 4 large speakers and a sub, this thing ROCKS. I did not receive a manual but had no problem hooking every thing up, Simple powerful and love the looks of the amber display. I wish it had a Phono input but I purchased a preamp and will use the aux input for this. I have played with the front large/small settings and can not hear a lot of difference between the settings. With the fronts set to large the sub goes to sleep, set them on small and there is plenty of bass even with the sub turned off. Had a party Christmas Eve and found pictures had vibrated off the walls the next morning. The movies from DVD are great, I have only watched a few, I still am waiting on a center channel speaker. Have been enjoying my cd collection for the past 2 weeks. I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this to any one that likes music and movies.

Strength:

Superb all-rounder and the QUIET fan means you can stack equipment on top of it.

Weakness:

Only minor quirks. If you want something future-proofed buy something else.......a LOT more expensive!

I was after something musical as well as loud in 5.1 mode. The latest 6.1/7.1 surround modes don't interest me, well actually they do....but the wife and lack of wall space rule them out! My two brothers own a/v recievers - a Sherwood 7103 and a Sony STDB 940. The Sherwood is a bottom of the range A/v amp at best and VERY non-musical. The Sony is good with movies, if a little shrill for my liking, and less good with music. My first choice was a Marantz SR4200 on sale at £199.95, but out of stock, as was the more expensive SR5200. After many hours scouring a LOT of websites I found myself back at Richer Sounds. A Nak originally on sale at £799.95 now at £299.95....sounded good! I had not even read a review of the Nak, let alone listened to one. So have I made the right choice, or at least a sensible one? Unequivacly YES. It does exactly what I ask of it. Having read the other reviews I have no such problems with noisy fans or cheap build. I do agree with some comments regarding the lack of bass adjustment re. the front speakers, but all a/v receivers have their quirks. Overall the Nak sounds superb in all departments....the better the speakers the better the sound from them will be. For £300.00 it's a steal.

Strength:

It's cheap and easy to operate. Very powerfull. What can I say buy it!! To improve on this you have to pay an additional £1500 on top.

Weakness:

Could sound a bit bright at high volume's. But it could be my B&W's. When switching between surround mode's you could damage your speaker's.

I have been shopping around for a proper HIFI unit which is good in stereo and surround mode. But this thing does the job with no problem at all. I listened to the Rotel RSX1065 with BW CDM9NT but for an additional £3600 makes me wonder that this Nakamichi is very cheap. Besides that I like the loudness and the other subtle modes. Currently I use the B&W CDM1NT with REL Q150 subwoofer and B&W CDMNT with ARCAM DV88 and CD92T. The only thing I am looking for is a midbass improvement because I play bassguitar myself and I am very difficult concerning Bass.
