Strength:

Clean, Dynamic sound; superb tight bass.

Weakness:

None

If you are intersted in sound quality-this is the receiver for you. If you want a lot of bells and whistles, then go with Yamaha or Denon. I was on a search for the perfect receiver for under $2,000. I auditioned Rotel, Yamaha, Denon, and Pioneer Elite. None were even close to the dynamics and the detail that the Nak exhibited. My volume knob rarely has to go above the 10 o'clock position on movies or in plain two channel. The Pioneer's volume at 2 o'clock wasn't as loud and controlled. The Denon had no bass, and the Yamaha was too bright. The Rotel was nice, but a little too laid back for my taste. I am just waiting for my Paradigm Studio 60's to come in so I can be in audio heaven.

Strength:

Audio clarity and sound. looks, its a rather large reciever that commands respect.

Weakness:

remote, it would have been nice to have a back lit remote. i would rather have 5 point binding posts, but who cares when your using banana plugs anyways

Overall i am very satisified with the level of output this a/v reciever puts out. using the 5.1 option for it's use in a home theatre is amazing. Over the past month i have watched a dvd once a night, and each time i am impressed with it's prefomance. the av10 is easy to use and has plenty of options. the av10 works well with nakamichi's mb10. I love my system!

As far as price it is the best. denon 5800 was over priced and was not as good when listening to the radio, also the "natural, jazz, etc" settings sounded alike. the av10 only has prologic, 5.1, natural and hall but they are distinctly different and extras are not needed. i like hearing cd's, dvd's, and the radio in the manor they were intended to be heard in. HK and yamaha were no comparison to the av10. they had good asthetic value but i am more interested in sound reproduction and quality. Marantz and rotel were very good, however for the price the nak was better. i felt that the marantz reciever sounded too musical at times. i also liked the fact that the av10 had harmonic time alignment, something the rest didn't.

My equipment:

Sony KV32FV26 (flat screen monitor)
Nak AV10 (reciever)
Nak MB10 (5 disc cd bank)
Pioneer DV333 (dvd player)
Monster HTS2500 (power conditioner)
Wharfdale Modus (center speaker)
Wharfdale MFM-7's (front speakers-biwired)
Wharfdale MFM-5's (rear speakers)
B&W ASW1000 (powered subwoofer)
Cables are all monster cables refrence Z2

Strength:

Power,Sound, musicality

Weakness:

somewhat cheap speker binding posts

I bought this unit over a month ago after comparing with similar products from Denon(AvR3800), Yamaha(RX1000), NAD(761). Denon and Yamaha did not sound as good to me. I had an opportunity to get a NAD 770 (floor model) at the same price. New 770 costs about $600 more than the price I paid for AV10. NAD 770 sounded close to AV10 or may be slightly better, but I did not buy NAD because 770 is being discontinued.

I am happy with the sound quality of AV10. Very musical. Only gripe I have is regarding the speaker binding posts. The first unit had to be exchanged because of loose contact. The fan noise that people complained about (see other reviews) does not bother me. I can hear the fan only in the middle of the night when everything is quiet and no music is playing. It does not distract me.

If there was an option, I would have given 4.5 as overall rating. I am giving it a 4 overall and 5 for Value rating.

The unit is connected to PSB Stratus Silver-i(excellent) with Tara Lab biwire cable. Overall excellent value for music.

Strength:

Incredible Stereo sound, especially tight, instantaneous bass, spatial separation, depth and imaging. Good power.

Weakness:

Lack up upgradeability due to no 6 channel inputs. Can switch RCA -> Svideo or Svideo to RCA. Remote not backlit but is learning.

I have used the AV10 for about 3 months now. I let the better Stereo Sound quality of this unit outweigh the lack of upgradeability and bells and whistles. I have not looked back since, especially after ruling out the Marantz (no bass) and Yamaha (nothing special) in the audio stores. I then brought home the Denon 3300 and hooked it up side by side with the Nak. No comparison, while the Denon was smooth, the base did NOT compare, not as tight or instantaneous. The Quality of the Denon did not seem to be quite as good (although it is ~250 cheaper)and the extra bells and whistles didn't thrill me.

The NAK truly shines in 2 channel stereo mode. In dolby surround, use the Natural mode instead. Dolby digital and DTS fantastic, and power provided will rock my room (13x20).

Remote should have been backlit but you can use the Palm Pilot instead with $39 software.

Very happy. Maybe the Nasdaq will do another 70% in 2000 and I'll buy Proceed and never have to worry about upgrading again.

Equipment:
Speakers:

center: ADS

Sony 7700 (digital coax not optical)

Custom Connectors (made for Cellular Linear power amplifiers) which actually A-B'ed better than Monster cables I had bought and returned.

Weakness:

need to be more expensive,to be more profitable for it's company,to make a lot of propaganda marketing compaign to accepted from people spend a lot of money in products more lower in quality and sound.

we must agree that we spend money only to listen good sound. not for advertisment or shape or brand or claimed options and spec. only beleive your ear. if you are agree.
try av10 who come from the company which respect it's customers a long years from it casset decks.

no problem with the fan like denonA10SE. I DON,T KNOW WHY A LOT OF CUSTOMER IN USA complain from this fan.
- easy setup. no headach inducer DSP modes.classified from the very comlicated setup in sony 777.the famous sony 777 don,t give me any more power.only prestigeous remote
- against yamaha A1,it give me excellent sound in both music sterio like home theater.yamaha only for HT.
AGAINST DENON 3801, more more powerful.

Strength:

Clean and powerful sound, simplistic classic design, excellent remote, ease of use, etc.

Weakness:

I bought this on the basis of HT magazine review. Once I saw and heard it at a store, I had to have it. I've listened to it now for about 6 months now and love it as much as the first day I got it. It's not often that I'm this satisfied w/ a purchase. You simply cannot go wrong. I just wish that I had purchased better speakers(Energy Take 5) to truely enjoy the power in these babies. Take 5 is great spaekers for the price, but my AV-10 deserved better. Try listening to Saving Private Ryan DVD in DTS. Unbelievable! I really love this receiver!

Strength:

The sound quality can not be matched in its price range.

Weakness:

None yet

If your budget allows you to spend thousands, then buy some quality seperates (Adcom, Parasound, Bryston). If you only have $2600 to spend, buy the B&K (truely awesome). If you have less than $2600, nothing compares to the Nak. H&K are almost comparable in sound quality, but you need only read the AVR65 reviews on this board to realize why its not really an option (wish they were there two years ago). Rotel, Onkyo and Yamaha, are not even close. You can't go wrong with either the NAK or the NAD T770. I won't pay the extra money for the NAD (got my Nak for under $1000), bc my own experience is that they are not that reliable. This is absolutely the best receiver that you can buy for less than $2600!!!!!!!!!!1

Dumped my Nak my friends, the AV-10 sucks and big time. It's fan is so noisy and even my Technics is better sounding than this awful receiver. What crap, I think it may still be made in China.
Oh well, dujp and start over.

Yikes what trash!

The AV10 sounds great. I agree with all the reviews about the sound quality. However, I do think Nakamichi needs to improve the quality control. My first AV10 had the balance nob off by 10 degrees. When I was connecting the RCA cables to the VCR input, I realized I had swapped the input and output. Upon removing the cables to swap them, the RCA jacks came off with the cables. Wow, I then returned the unit for a second one. Again my balance nob was off by 10 degrees. Besides the quality problems, the unit does sound great with cd and dvd's. I want to give 4.5 stars.
