Strength:

clear sound, rich high and mids

Weakness:

strange white noise after turned on(maybe my setup problem)

solid built, crystal clear sound, rich and beautiful. However, as a casual listener, I don't understand why there exists white noise from my speaker when I turn on the volume over half (after 12 oclock position). This happens when only my AV7 is turned on, no other players, and the noise from speaker increases with high volume. It seems that the receiver produces this noise after it is turn on, isn't it suppose to be quiet and keep noise from sending to the speaker? anyone can help me on this question? thanks in advance it supposed to be

Strength:

Good sound. Low price. Looks nice.

Weakness:

Sound distorts at very high sound level. Wharfdale Valdus 500 speakers. High grade cables. No Phono input.

Bought Nak and Wharfdales from Ubid. Good low price system. All under $650 delivered. Not audiophile, but a good value for value hunters. Also warranty is valid from Nak direct.

Strength:

Warmth, reasonable clean power on the amp section, 6-channel capability, NICE sound at the price range

Weakness:

Mediocre radio tuner section, that's it! The fan is NOT NOISY, so stop complaining!

NOTE: To David from Winnipeg, CA. IMHO, the prob is more
with the fact that you used DVD players to play CDs.

First of all, when you do areview, please take into consideration the price/performance ratio. Secondly, make sure you doesn't hook this receiver with crappy speakers, or vice versa: superb speakers with a crappy receiver/amp. Think before speak!

Nakamichi delivers again with AV-7 receiver. The fan is not at all noisy, unless you deliberately listen to the noise. The remote could have use some learning capabilities, but that is not a major issue here.

Sound: Typical Nak, warm and cosiderably clean, with a very
low distortion at any given volume level. NAK really
stands out of the typical 'Japanese garbages' out
there.

Built: Solid and convincing. Unfortunately, the center and
surround speakers inputs could make use of binding
posts instead of spring clips.

Verdict: A nice, powerful receiver in the $300-$500 range.
Unlike the typical Japanese receiver, Nak really
delivers within the price range!

Complaint: NAK USA should adopt the Japanese policy of
customer service. If not, try to learn from
WalMart!

Strength:

Superb clean sound, solid build, nice looks.

Weakness:

No binding posts for rear and center speaker terminals.

Update to my review after 6 months of using this machine everyday. I have had no complaints whatsoever about this machine. The sound quality is simply outstanding compared to a lot of separates and receivers I have ever listened to. I prefer this over AV8 and AV10 because this one has 6-channel inputs but the AV8 and AV10 do not. This means that I don't have to get stuck to any specific decoder or A/D converter. Thus in the future I can hook it to any new or advanced or special decoder/coverter that I like.

Strength:

Amazing Sound Quality
Elegant Design

Weakness:

Tuner is average
Remote Control is not Universal
Fan is annoyingly loud
Very small hum when using headphones

I bought this from Ubid for 227. Even at 499 (the usual mail order price) I think that it is the best sounding receiver in its class. It definitely comes the closest in my comparisons in sound quality to the Arcam Delta 290. Even with the annoying quirks that it has like the fan, I would pick this over any of the others that I compared it to. I also prefer the idea of having off-board A/D converters for DVD. This makes is possible just to upgrade the DVD player rather than the whole system as DVD evolves. In two-channel mode it sounds very musical/lifelike with an excellent sound stage.

Dolby pro-logic?? (see below)

When listening to sources in the prologic mode (broadcast TV or DSS) often the sound seems to jump from speaker to speaker. It's like the decoding is malfunctioning. Has anyone experienced this? Other than this possible problem, it seems to be working fine.

No digital input

I buy this receiver from internet for US$190.

Since this stuff is my first receiver I have, I can not compare with the other peer brand (I think this is fair enough).

But in my opinion, this product deliver sound that I want to hear, bass is not too low, treble is not too high, clear midrange, crisp, "excellent in Price/Performance ratio".

The only noise that I hear (from around 10 cm distance) is wind blow generate by fan for Heat reduction (not a "Fan Noise").

Strength:

clean and powerful sound, good dd effects, clean design, high value if bought at auction prices

Weakness:

lack of extras, big remote that can't
control bass/treble,limited options in dvd 5.1 mode as far as volume controls

This receiver kicks much mass-market ass! My tannoy m2 sing with new definition and clarity. And the bass! my sony dvd has a built in decoder and the 5.1 mode really puts to shame many theaters and totally beats the pro-logic sound.
If you can still find this on ubid for under 300 (600 retail) and you don't need to have control over every aspect of your set-up but just want good clean sound with minimal adjustment, Nak baby, Nak!

Power (see below)

Like many readers posting to this forum, I picked up the AV-7 from uBid for a relative bargin (~$300). I initially paired the receiver with Wharfedale Modus One-Sixes, which the Nak had no trouble driving. I upgraded to some Magnepan MMGs, and the amp began clipping at high SPLs.

In retrospect, I am not too surprised, since the MMGs impose a 4 ohm load to the amp. At normal listening volumes, the Nak excels and demonstrates very nice musicality. I am planning on selling the Nak (for the power issue alone) and will probably buy a h/k AVR-85 from Onsale.

I think that this forum is an extremely valuable resource, though the quantitative ratings should be taken with a grain of salt. It is not clear whether the ratings are measured on an absolute scale or a relative scale. No one would doubt that any of the Martin-Logans would blow away any Bose speakers, but they both have received 5 stars. More importantly, many readers give whatever new piece of equipment they have purchased a five because it sounds so much better than their old 5-year-old mass market systems. Conversely, some others have an axe to grind and unfairly punish the equipment with one star (these are usually the people who can't spell, either).

Of note, I would definitely use better speaker wire with this receiver (the entry-level Kimber does just fine).
