Strength:

Clean looking, warm sound, decent power. The remote is easy to use and left nothing to be desired. Setup for a not Audiophile is fairly easy.

Weakness:

You can only listen to CD playback on two speakers. Not DTS compatible.

This is a great buy and as long as you are okay listening to your CD's on only two speakers and you can live without the DTS features (as most people can). It is a no brainer and I get many compliments on the great sound quality during 5.1 dvd's.

Strength:

Great sound, very easy to use and set-up. nice features

Weakness:

have not found any big weaknesses as of yet.

When I first purchased this reciever, I was a little worried that 80 x 5 wpc wouldn't be sufficient enough to push my speakers to realistic levels of enjoyment. Boy was I wrong!! I was, and still am, amazed at the sound reproduction of dvd's. I would whole heartedly recomend this reciever to anyone looking for great features, quality sound and resonable pricing. This reciever sounds good enough to compare it with units twice it's price!! I also found that hooking up my stand alone cd player (Ultec) using analog cables and using the cd players dac's makes a great deal of difference for cd audio playback.

I am a newly owner of the receiver Nakamichi AV-8 and let me tell you that I was totally blown off my seat when I watched Twister in DD 5.1. The sound is well balanced, loud and clear but never irritating. This receiver is really simple of use and it will autoprogram itself whether the audio source is DD 5.1, PCM Stereo, Dolby Prologic or simply Dolby Surround. Also, it doesn't have this cleap plastic look compared to other competitor brand. I recommend this receiver.

This is a really great receiver. Nakamichi's audio focus comes through with detailed sound at all levels. Bass is tight and what you would expect from a system at this price range. It's powerful enough to drive most speakers either in stereo or in surround. The only drawback is that it lacks DTS surround but is an incredible deal at this price.

Strength:

Very Clean

Weakness:

Absolutely None!

The AV-8 does not get enough recognition since it does not a DTS mode. Who cares DTS is like Beta….. sure to die. No regrets in buying the AV-8, it is absolutely a great receiver. The AV-8 is very clean, and punchy yet the sound in very detailed. The power rating by nakamichi is a very conservative 80-Watts per channel in Dolby Pro-Logic and Dolby-Digital. The AV-8 is sure to beat any Pioneer, Yamaha on the market.

Strength:

Excellent, warm, full amplifier section. Clean appearance. Strong tuner section.

Weakness:

Crappy remote (that's OK, I'll buy my own multi-brand learning remote, thank you)

I was looking for a decent mid-fi AV receiver similar to the Marantz SR-XX line Denon 3300 or the consumer Yamaha line. I saw a banner ad advertising Nak receivers on Ubid, so I checked it out, and the reviews on this site. Compared to my NAD (which was fine when it was powering my Vandersteen 1b's), the sound coming out of my Paradigm Monitor 9's was just unbelievable. There was a whole new register of clear, warm bass tones on some of my favorite CD's that I just hadn't heard before. I am going to be hooking up my surrounds and center (a pair of >>old<< Polk Audio 4's for l/r surround and a Paradigm CC350 in the middle), so I'll let you know how the Dolby Digital characteristics are.

Strength:

Amazing sound
Good looks
Near silent fan

Weakness:

Remote, (audio/video switching, no backlight)

Thank you to past reviewers for your guidance. This site ROCKS!

I have nothing but praise so far.

In regards to previous reviews... My auto detect seems to work just fine. The fan is silent. And I have plenty of low end. In fact as a musician and sound engineer, I would have to say this amp has a very flat response.

Ever since my well meaning x-girlfriend (breakup unrelated) replaced my old Nak with that Kenwood Pro-Logic, something has been lacking. Call it heart. As a musician, quality band equipment has a way of sucking your home system budget dry. But after seeing a friends DVD player in action, I knew it was time for an upgrade.

I thought I might have to replace everything until I plugged this baby in.

Original system:
(2) Boston A-60 (8" and 1") fronts
(1) Boston A-40V (6" and 3/4") shielded center
(1) Audio Source 10" passive sub (bought to bandaid woofer
on one of A-60s that clipping Kenwood damaged, seemed
to work at keeping heavy lows out.
(2) Polk R-10 (51/4" and 1/4") ported surrounds.
(on sale, Circuit City $40 ea.)

This receiver really brought my system to life. I think the Bostons also have a very flat response and everything including vocals are perfectly clear. I use no eq. Music and Cinema are near perfect. I'm surprised at the amount of Bass I get from that cheap sub now (although I've got my eye on an M&K push/pull rig... my new system deserves it,) and the amp has no problem pushing it to some pretty high volume levels.

DTS would be nice but having not heard it, I don't know what I'm missing (reverts to Dolby Digital). I bought this as a balance between sound quality, cost and lastly... features.
