Strength:

Very flexible with many features to make most anyone happy.

Weakness:

It has everything I wanted except for the fact that it still looks like an Onkyo. They could've put a different face plate on it.

This receiver has it all. I searched many sites, read many reviews and articles to arrive at my decision. I feel like this is the best piece of equipment for the money. Speaking of which, if I would've waited two weeks later, I could've had it for $799 like the other reviewer also. Regardless I'm happy with the purchase even at that price. I was looking for a unit that had built-in Dolby Digital and DTS. Plus the power rating on this receiver just made it stand out from the rest even more. The only thing I wish this unit had was component video. I have my DVD player hooked up to my tv through component video and optical to my receiver. The problem is I can't see the on-screen menus and volume control unless I watch it through S-video. Other than that, I love this receiver and give it five stars!!!!!

I went through 1 575 and 2 777's before giving up and buying the current top of the line receiver, the DTR-7. On the outside this receiver looks just like the 777 but on the inside it's a different story. This unit didn't suffer from any of the bugs that the 575, 676, or 777 had. There is no static, hum, or hiss. Well, there is a slight hiss but this is normal, as all amps emit a slight hiss when powered on. except for the 3300 which is silent when there is no signal, but I think they put a noise gate in to mute it down when there is no signal. Dolby digital 5.1 sounds awesome on the DTR-7. 2 channel stereo sounds equally excellent. There is no loss of dynamics. Sounds are strongly fixed in the soundstage. There is alot of debate about these 5 channel stereo modes amongst the 2 channel purists. I personally think it is a nice feature to include. Why waste the power of those amps when you could put them to use when you really want to blast it! Besides there is a direct mode that will bypass the DSP processors when you really want to get critical and hear a pure pass through. I have not tried any DTS software as of yet, but I am guessing it will sound at least as good as DD 5.1. (or better as they say). The case is strongly built and very solid. Lots of people rate a receiver by its weight, and if you do you'll like the DTR-7. It's an anchor! The remote is the best I have seen to date, not counting pronto types. I have it running all my components plus triggering macros on my computer. I have not used the multi room/source functions yet, but it will pass audio and video to another receiver in another part of the house. It's also compatible with 3rd party infared repeaters. I would definetly buy this unit again.

Weakness:

DSP's

I have been playing with the DTR-7 for a few months now and love it. I was initially considering the DTR-6, Marantz SR-7000, Pioneer Elite VSX-24TX and Denon AVR-2800. One of my biggest decision makers was the remote. I wanted a good remote. Once a system is set-up nearly all commands and functions are going to be executed with the remote, therefore the Denon was eliminated and the Elite close behind it. Though it was still a very tough decision between the DTR-6 and SR-7000. I received a great offer on the DTR-7($725), which eliminated the DTR-6 and SR-7000 in one swoop and I have not regretted it a single bit.

Integra receivers are outstanding units that don't get the recognition they deserve. The DTR-7 has plenty of clean power, no hissing or humming. Performance is unremarkable. I am no audiophile nor do I care to be. All I can say is the DTR-7 sounds great with any source. HT is amazing, playing Saving Private Ryan DTS had ricochets bouncing off my walls, and the lobby scene through the end of the Matrix is unbelievable. But one of my favorite 'scenes' isn't really a scene at all. I'm talking about the THX intro at the beginning of THX DVD's. Crank it up and make everything in the house shake!!!!

An easy to use remote and on-screen menus facilitates quick and simple set-up. Set-up can be completed on the receiver without using the OSD but it is a little more difficult. A well put together instruction manual (63 pages) explains all features of the receiver. The IntelliVolume feature maintains the same volume level when switching source components. It takes a little time to set up just right but works great.

Outstanding backlit remote. It made my collection of 5 turn into 1. All features of the receiver are accessible from the remote without having to go to the receiver to adjust anything, including selecting A or B speakers.

Heat was a concern of mine when I placed it in my entertainment center. It sits on a shelf by itself about an inch of room on either side, two inches on top, the front is a glass door and the back is open. I have left the unit on for 12+ hours 3-4 times and have not noticed a substantial build up of heat. I believe the DTR-7 will easily rest in my home over the next 10+ years.

Several of the DSP's seem a little useless. Though I haven't really played with most of them nor 'tweaked' them. They are adjustable for reverb, reflection, effect and room size. The ones I find myself sticking to are THX Cinema for movies (DVD & VHS) and 5-Channel Stereo for everything else.

Bottom line: get a DTR-7, you will not regret it!

Current set-up:
Integra DTR-7
Pioneer PDF-1009 301 CD Changer
Infinity Studio Monitors (10+ years old) - Main, Srnd, Ctr
Klipsch KSW-12 Sub
Infinity RS-3 (in another room set up on B speaker)
Sony DVP-530S DVD
JVC HR-3600 SVHS
Sony 32" TV
Monster Interconnects and speaker wires

Speaker upgrade is next, sans sub and RS-3's. Considering M&K, DefTech, Paradigm, or Klipsch.

Strength:

The DTR-7 has a very warm natural sound. It has plenty of power and I have never heard any distortion or any hiss or hum.

Weakness:

NONE

This is a very well rounded receiver has everything you could want in a receiver in the price range. I have had my DTR-7 for Approximately 8 months and have had plenty of time to listen to all areas of the receiver DD,DTS,STEREO.
The DTR-7 is a very accurate piece and will pick out alot of flaws in many dvd's that are not recorded and transfered well. I plan on having this peice of equipment until I upgrade to the Onkyo 989.Onkyo is making some of the best receiver on the market again.

Strength:

Solid build with quality materials

Weakness:

Hiss, humm, fair sound quality (Serial No: 2990020925)

After auditioning (and eliminating) the Yamaha 995 and the Nakamichi AV-10, my choice was down to the Denon 3300, Marantz SR-8000 and the Onkyo Integra DTR-7. Based on receiver features, looks and apparent build quality, I chose the DTR-7. I had already chosen the Canton Ergo 92 DC tower speakers (4-8 ohms, SPL 88db), Cambridge Audio D500 CD player and the Onkyo Integra DPS-5 DVD player.

After spending a few days reading the manual and setting up the system, I was ready for testing. The first thing I noticed about the DTR-7 was that the sound, while full, was somewhat harsh. This was different from what I experienced in the audio store. I was told to let everything "break in" before making any final judgements.

During this "break in" period of several weeks I noticed that the DVD movies had quite a bit of hiss during quite dialogue sections. CDs also seemed to be "hissier" than with our previous system. Upon turning off the source (DVD,CD) I listened to the speakers. Hiss! Lots of it! In stereo/direct mode, I could hear the hiss from over 2 feet away. In any of the 5 speaker modes, I could hear the hiss from over 3 feet away. There was also humm, mainly in the center channel. We disconnected EVERYTHING in the room (CD,DVD,VCR,TV,cable TV), use line conditioners and an upgraded power cord. No difference.

A call into Onkyo, which was returned in a few days, indicated that there was a problem with a ground wire location in the DTR-7 and to have it repaired. After arranging with an Onkyo repair shop, we had our DTR-7 repaired and returned in a little over a week. Well, the hiss level was a strong as ever, as was the humm. We continued listening to the system, but we did not enjoy it much (beyond the hiss and humm). After more than a month of testing and listening, we returned the DTR-7. A second DTR-7 was given to us (from a different batch). It had the same problems. At this point, we moved on to another receiver.

If the hiss/humm were minimal with the DTR-7, I would probably rate it a 4. It's musical sound was passable and it did a decent job with DVD movies. It is well-built and does have a lot of useful features, so if someone gets a DTR-7 without the hiss and humm and enjoys the musical sound from this receiver, is would be a 5.

Non-NFB amp, 5.1 ch inputs, front power in loops, macro remote

Weakness:

none

This receiver has a ton of headroom. Sound is clean and undistorted even with the volume maxed out. My front 6 and 1/2" Quart towers pump out more bass than ever. The noise floor is very low. If anyone thinks that this receiver has a noise problem, check out the review of the txds777 in the March edition of Sound and Vision magazine. The report claimed that the noise was 'among the best he tested and low for any priced receiver.' The DTR7 is the same unit with better parts. Every amp will produce some noise with a signal. Some of the noise is recorded onto dvd and cd's. When I pause my dvd and crank the volume I hear no noise. With the dvd playing and the volume at level 1 I can hear a slight noise when I put my ear up to the speaker, but this NORMAL. No signal to noise ratio is perfect, thats why we have a signal to noise ratio, if you no what I mean. I love the macro functions on the remote. I can push two buttons and turn on everything I have plus get everything on the right inputs. I highly recommend this unit. The only other unit I would consider is the new TXDS989. But it is not available yet and it costs about $2800. The $800 I spent on my DTR7 was steep enough for me.

Strength:

Nice large soundstage, best sound quality of all the receivers I auditioned, best feature set. All the power I could ever need, hand-matched parts. Great price from noav.com

Weakness:

Wish remote had some pre-programmed commands for other manufacturers, but other than that, I love this remote.

The Onkyo fits my needs perfectly, I'm so glad the stereo music comming from this unit sounds so full and warm. The HT sound is also stunning.

Before, I was using a dedicated ($$$) JVC S-video switcher for all of my video gear. The Onkyo's video section passes the S-video much more cleanly through to my monitor than the JVC.

Strength:

Quality Build, Programable remote, Sheer Sound Quality

Weakness:

Slightly too expensive to be used as a boat anchor, although heavy enough. (not really a weakness)

After an incredible amount of time online and in the stores I chose this reciever to drive my M&K 750 THX select speaker system. I upgraded the M&K 1200 sub to the M&K 105 because it was a much higer quality THX sub for only $60 more at my store. Every peice of my system is THX select certified, (except for my DVD) and it sounds nothing short of orgasmic. I suspect that my girlfriend is jealous of my reciever because I spend just as much time with it as I do with her(sometimes more). I CAN'T stop listening to it. I DEFY YOU TO FIND A $2,500 SPEAKER/RECIEVER/DVD COMBO THAT CAN EVEN TOUCH THE M&K'S WITH THE ONKYO RECIEVER (AND DVD). The Immaging is unparalleled, the rich musical base is abundant and accurate. Just go to the M&K 750 THX reviews on this site and you will read the accounts of countless other M&K worshipers. These speakers won "speakers of the year" from 3 different audio magazines. I am getting off the subject with my speakers, but I must give credit where credit is due. Buy DTR-7 over the 777 because the hum problem has been fixed, the parts are better, and for $100 more your reciever will probably last you 5-10 years longer. For the price (I paid $900) you will not find a better sounding and better built reciever. I want to go on, but my system is calling...

None found yet -- heavy sucker....

After reading the reviews and doing extensive research, I decided to purchase this model, even though it was dc'd. I was able to get an excellent deal and chose not to pass it up. Bang fer the buck you know... I have yet to be disapointed with this amp. Volume is not nor will it ever be an issue with amp, low or high. You can easily cause damage to living things with this puppy. Yet I've only been able to cause seizures with the dogs. A little tweeking and I'll kill those buggers yet. (Just kidding, of course) I am pleased with the performance of this amp with my NHT speakers. I wanted a warmer natural sound and have managed to achieve this with this combo. (NHT Super 1's on the front , Super Zeroes on the surround a Super Center and a Super Sub w/ a single 10"..) All those reviews where people said that they have rediscovered their CD collection are ringing true...The movie experience is outragious as well. Now all I need is a 65" Digital TV. I am a happy man.
