Strength:

Simple controls, Bass and Treble adjustments

Weakness:

For it's price none

I believe this receiver is a good entry level. Don't expect bass, You need a good subwoofer to deliver the lower octaves. Sound quality, if you have a good speakers, this thing will provide clean and defined music, again you have to match this with a good subs. It's an excellent choice for home theater, the DTS feature really makes a lot of difference. You need to match with a good speaker system to enjoy a more detailed listening session. In my setup, the B&W DM302 is perfect for main and surrounds, included of course is the appropriate center model also from B&W. Don't buy this if you have a large room.

Workmanship, and front finish is excellent, I got a gold finished panel to match my DVD player.

Strength:

flat response over the entire bandwidth. Clear, crisp, for its price its a bargain! Simple controls

Weakness:

lacks learning remote control.

Overall, I find the unit acceptable for it's price, the controls are simple and easy to use. I don't like the remote. They could have at least add a few learning modes to control the other equipments. I give it a 4 star!

Strength:

Bang for the buck. Quality Machine.

Weakness:

Remote. Not Weak, just ugly.

Converted my large basement into a small theatre.
Using the Onkyo 484 for a while. Absolutely no problems.

Runs great and DTS is a god-send. easy to setup and with a great TV and good speakers I have nothing but praise for Onkyo.

Pop in Gladiator opening scene or Saving Private Ryan and the whole house will thunder and shake.

Using:
- Hitachi 53" SBX (great TV)
- Paradigm Mini Monitors (Mains)
- Paradigm Titans (Surrounds)
- Paradigm CC-150 (Centre)
- Paradigm PS-1000 Sub (great bass)
- Hitachi DVP-415 (unfortunately too many probs with 505)

Strength:

Easy to use and Set up

Weakness:

Very poor dynamics, poor soundstage/imaging, dull sound.

Bought this for my sister for Christmas. I hooked it up and actually sounded so weak, I thought something was wrong. I also bought my sister the new KEF Cresta 2s. They are OK for the money, good bass for the size, very detailed and smooth, but can't handle much power. DS484 has really bad dynamics, no punch, smeared sound, not good current slew rate. I have a 20 year old 40 watt Onkyo 2500 reciever that sounds like an Arcam next to the new model. I was ready to go down to LA and buy a NAD C730, I have little doubt that would have been better. My sister still liked it, but I actually feel guilty giving it to her.

I would recommend the Yamaha series and the NAD 2 channel recievers over this for just a few bucks more.

Strength:

No "loudness" mode to hype up the sound. A no BS receiver.
Good binding posts, DTS, equipment inside is quite large and can handle power.

Weakness:

I have 5 remote controls for my home theater, it would be nice if Onkyo's was universal.

I'm just getting into the home theater/hi fi audio scene, and thought this would be a good amp because of it's THD rating and simple bass and treble knobs instead of the weird loudness modes on many receivers.

My front speakers are 3 way KLH towers which accurately reproduce sound thanks to the Onkyo (a feat i never thought a KLH speaker could accomplish)

My rear speakers are Sony 2 way bookshelf speakers and my center is a Yahama 3 way.

The only decent speaker hooked up to my Onkyo is an Acoustic Research 12 inch powered subwoofer. If not for this subwoofer, the Onkyo 484 experience would be diminished significantly.

Great for a first amp, great for DTS (as long as u have a powerful sub)

Strength:

Very clean sounds!! Even at MAX vol levels no distoration with 6-speaker setup. Very easy to use (Like Old School recivers)!!

Weakness:

Remote very small and the buttons also.

The Onkyo I have is the TXDS 494 which is the newest upgrade to the 484. So I will put my opinions on here since there is no selection for the TXDS 494.

I got to say for this A/V receiver by ONKYO and only at 55 watts its awsome and all I use it for is home theather!!!

I recentaly owned a Sony STR DE475 which was nice,,, but way under powered for my speaker setup (80 watts). Then I returned it and got the Sony STR DE575 (100 watts) and it was good also.. but at higher volumes it hisssssssed way too much!! (Hey I am picky when it comes to quality sound).

So I took back the Sony STR DE575 and got the little OL ONKYO 55 watter and hooked up this puppy and boy OL boy......can I call it a BEAST and not a PUPPY??? Well if so... this receiver kicks butt!! The quality is all there and even at MAX vol it was great... no distortion or hissin. This is also a very easy using reciver w/o all the BS Hertz/frequency setup's like allot of these new A/V receivers are!!! I love it! The only thing they could of improved on was the remote... just a little small and the buttons too!! But I give this receiver a 5 STARS all the way!!! This is my 1st ONKYO and it sure made a great impression for me!!!! Go check it out... trust me its NOT made for little rooms!! I have a big living room and it sure made that livin room fell like if you were at a THX certified theather!!!!

Strength:

Value for money, Clean undistorted sound.

Weakness:

Needs Subwoofers. Poor remote features. To Onkyo, please add a better remote next time. If you a good remote, price wise it could have been insignificant.

Simplicity, the cntrols are quite easy to understand, bass and treble can be adjusted without the need to seach for menus.

Clean sound, noise- I havent heard any so far, DTS and DD decoders are a welcome option.

I got a Gold colored panel so the finish looks expensive. My system comprising of JAMO 8 series speakers without subs. The sound, well for it's price it is definitely good. I would recommend this unit to my friend.

Strength:

High Current Amp,Theater Preformance,Treble/ Bass Knobs Nice Touch,Clean Crisp Sound

Weakness:

No Complaints

The Onkyo blew the Sony away in every aspect. For a 11' by 11' bedroom the 55 high current watts give ample power.Music was very crisp,I was so releived, only wish I had gotten rid of the Sony sooner.I am using Polk speakers and sub, really rocks the room for music and movies. Not alot of room for experimenting with placement of speakers in such a small room but still I am very pleased with this purchase.Sub really helps with bass.Just bought Onkyo 878 THX receiver with Infinity IL 50's for living room system.Very happy with products.Good Deal!

Strength:

2 Channel Music unbeatable
5 Channel Movies very Good
High Current Amp

Weakness:

Cant decode the new DTS "ES" in Movies

I am one of the lucky guy who has a girlfriend who believes
that Dolby Digital and 6 speakers dosen't mean louder just more intense! hehe Thank you Doctor Dolby.

The Onkyo I have is the TXDS 494 which is the newest upgrade to the 484. I am getting an incredible kick of having Metallica set up their equipment each night in my living room and performing for me. Hehe, Seriously! It sounds like a live band, there is absolutely no detectable distortion even when volume cranked to the point of rattling
the window. Just clear, vibrant drums and guitar and distinct vocals, throught the audible spectrum. Mids, Highs and lows are punchy, warm and thunderous without sounding overdriven.

The movies are excellant and the channel seperation is superb. On Jurassic Park during the scene where the Explorers are stopped during the rainfall and the Rex does his thing, each stomp of his foot shakes the living room and when the T-Rex screams, our dog whimpers and crys. Absolutely, after 10 years of trying to accurately reproduce this effect as Spielburg intended it...I am finally satisfied.

This receiver is rated at 55 watts per channel but I truely believe with the high current amp, this makes absolutely no difference. I am sure I could shatter the windows with this receiver and yet not max or overtax the amp.

Strength:

natural, sweet hi, powerful

Weakness:

?

I saw the sale price a decided to get it for the bathroom (seriously). To my surprise, it sounds clean and powerful, and is now my favorite, so I put it in the master bedroom instead. I also compared the Onkyo + Bic in-wall speakers (also el cheapo ~$80) with my other setup: Yamaha V1000 @ 100 w*5 (~$600) + Klipsch RCW-5 (~$500). While Yamaha+Klipsch has powerful bass and extremely clear, I like the Onkyo's musical, sweet midrange/high, somewhat like Nakamichi. This is a steal! Definely I will consider Onkyo better model the next time...
