Strength:

Sound quality and ease of use

Weakness:

Speaker binding posts spaced very close together

I love this amplifier. I have no complaints about the sound quality for movies. It is crisp and clean and the DTS decoding is great. I was dissatisfied with music at first but after hooking up a turntable I have no complaints. Even with its meager 55 watts per channel I have never had any problems with movies. Saving Private Ryan can shakes the house with out turning the amp all the way up. This is a great amp. The only way I would replace it is if I can get my hands on a 6.1 channel amp.

My system:
Onkyo TX-DS484
Speakers: 4 Infinity RS3s and Infinity CC-3 center channel
Sub: Cerwin Vega 15” powered sub
DVD player: Very Crappy Sharp
Technics Turntable

Excellent Sound and quality parts

Simply yet effective ht reciever, personally i am really impressed with the way onkyo builds their products. The reciver was recommended by a high-end audiophile shop. If you want to start out on the right path to audiophile heaven look no further than the 484. I like it more and more everytime I turn it on.

Strength:

Clear sound, powerfull bass and crystal clear treble.
Great value

Weakness:

I cant find any

Great system from JBL, the size of the speakers both central and front/surround are perfect (really small, yet very powerfull) and the subwoofer is really impressive.
A sweet deal for $400,00.
For this price range I haven't found anything that beats this set.

Strength:

easy to operate and set up

Weakness:

no s video input and weak bass speaker post are to close together

you guys are right about the weak bass output.my pioneer had more bass output by far. i compared the two recievers with my old 1983 model 10 norman lab towers which are 4 omh speakers and are very power hungry.( i burnt an older model pioneer receiver up accidently with these speakers-left on high volume to long). the pioneers did pretty good but the onkyo had very thin weak bass.the onkyo though done good with upper bass and on up. i think onkyo designed this receiver this way because its usally going to be used with a powered sub woofer. not a bad idea because that way they put more quality into the rest of the system. knowing its going to be used mostly for home theater. i think this unit has very good sound quality. but i have a sub that i also use when listening to two channel music. this unit even images pretty well in two channel mode.id recommend this unit. but remember you have to have a powered sub even for stereo listening even if you have large left and right speakers.

Strength:

very clean sound and nice base.

Weakness:

i wish it had more optical inputs

This receiver is a good performer for this price. Eventhough it's power output is only 55w, it's high current capability does good job on enhancing the sound. I would recommend this receiver if you plan to use it in a small room ideal for an aprtment.

Strength:

Very Clean Sound, almost complete digital I/O, with voltage selector options.

Weakness:

Poor bass in front speakers even if sub is off, low treble,
very flat sound, NO GRAPHIC EQUALIZER I/O, Cannot use speakers A and B simultaneously, NOT Made in Japan

For the price range here in the Philippines, this is an expensive audio equipment, but compare to other equivalent
features with other brand, this model is fairly good enough.

Haven't tried yet with HT configuration, only in Stereo mode
and found out to be less powerful than my old Pioneer Amp,
although the sound is very clean and no distortion at all.
Current input I am now using is my old Sansui cassette deck
and sounds flat with weak bass and low highs. Decided to
installed back my old locally assembled (unbranded) graphic
equalizer and it sounds great now. Treble became louder and
can be heard now, but bass is not really that powerful compare to my old Pioneer, using only front speakers. Maybe a subwoofer will solve this problem, hopefully.

The main reason for me to buy this unit is because it has a
voltage selector that I can switched to when we migrate to
Canada, bec. I am planning to bring a receiver DTS to Canada
and buy there the other equipment like the DVD and speakers. Also I thought this is Made in Japan but it is not,it's also made in Malaysia, JUST LIKE THE OTHERS.

A real hi-fi equipment can throw hi-treble freq. as far as it can get without distortion as well as drive very low bass without distorting woofer speaker even in high volume. No matter how expensive your audio equipment is, but if it only gives you flat music with less low and highs, it's terrible and a waste of money.

This model is OK for a budget conscious mind like me, so for
a price range with this features, this is a good buy.

Strength:

5ch. stereo, binding posts, and build and sound quality amazing at this price...

Weakness:

Remote is not universal

My first Onkyo product and I love it. At $249 this unit is a steal. The sound with music and movies all I can say is wow...Don't be fooled by the 55x5 power rating it has ample power and some to spare. 5ch. stero is amazing you will never go back to listening to plain old stereo again.

Weakness:

Poor Sound,No Power, No bass

What a disappointment. This Receiver sounds like an old transistor radio! I'm using efficient speakers and still the volume control has to be past 50 to get any kind of sound. Bass is just not there, Highs are harsh and unnatural. It's on it's way back to Circuit City as I'm writing this.

Weakness:

Remote.

This post is mainly to inform those of you who are considering buying this receiver that Circuit City has a great price online of just $249.99. You can do your transaction online and then pick it up at your local store with no shipping charge, just local taxes. The in-store customer next to you is paying $300 (a very fair price, but not a STEAL) for the same model!

My first impression of the receiver is very favorable. Nicely built, heavy. Sound in 2-channel is clean and sweet and refined, just what the doctor ordered for Klipsch (Forte) owners like me. I like to listen LOUD and this unit has ample power for me, even in 2ch with no sub. There is PLENTY of bass. Previous reviewers with 5" woofers shouldn't blame the receiver for their lack-of-bass problems. If you want to use small, low-efficiency speakers without a sub in a large room at high volume, get a higher-powered receiver (or better yet rethink your system.)

Yes, the remote and included FM antenna are cheesy, but at this low price for this good a unit, I won't complain.

Four solid unhyped stars for a solid unhyped product.

Weakness:

Not for inefficient speakers

This receiver delivers the goods at a very modest price compaired to what I have paid for other components. In fact I think Onkyo is turning out consumer grade product that compares with the "high end". I am using an Onkyo DX380 CD player with my 484. I still use good quality interconnects and speaker cables to get the best out of my system. I would take exception to one of the reviews below that states the receiver does not deliver in the high frequencies. I find it to be quite well extended. You can have whatever tone you want depending on what type of speaker you use. My speakers are extended to 20,000 hz and I get plenty of treble. I dont think at 55 watts per channel it has a lot of slam, but I think it has a very refined sound. The low distortion and clean sound is as good as the "high end' equipment I have used in the past. Dont spend more.
