Strength:

Great Finish, extremely functional, very sophisticated for a $300 receiver.

Weakness:

I wish per channel output could have been a little higher. I know we are not talking about a cheap receiver here, but 100 watts a channel is just not enough. Not with my lifestyle bose speakers and AR center channel speaker that would have blown it all away if it were a little higher.

I loved it from the day I bought. I got it open box so saved 50 buck on it straight which feels good. This was the first component I bought when I started building my first ever home theater system and very pleased I chose the TX-DS484. I got myself a WEGA 32", also onkyo 6-cd changer, SONY TCWE835S TAPE DECK, Toshiba dvd, samsung vcr, lifestyle bose 5 speakers, AR-4c center channel speaker and trust me the TX-DS484 never let me down. It rocks! I highly recommend it!!!

Strength:

Price! I stole it @ $124.00. I am impressed so far with the sound and clarity from this receiver. Also the ease of hook-up. The people saying the bass is weak is probably from the lack of a subwoofer. I have a cheap BIC sub that thumps just fine for my liking. Using the test tone on the remote control to fine tune the speakers is easy to use and perfect for dialing in the bass on the sub. I love this unit. Remote is light and kind of cheap looking, but it does what it should do.

Weakness:

None so far!

I'm sure there are better receivers out there, but for the money, I'll bet you can't find a better one out there!

I own an Onkyo SV-515PRO. It is old but it is reliable and a decent receiver. I have owned Onkyo equipment for 20 years and love the quality of this product. So, I decided to stay with this brand for that reason and when I saw the price and read the reviews I was even more sold!

Strength:

Nice, clean sound.

Weakness:

Remote, No S-Video I/Os....

This is a great little receiver if you can find it for $300 or less. It has a nice clean sound and it's very easy to operate. My Sony 525 doesn't sound near as good. Watched the Matrix on DVD in Dolby Digital and was very impressed. I plan on renting Saving Private Ryan to check out how the DTS sounds. Music CDs also sound excellent through this receiver. The remote stinks and their are is no S-Video, but for $300 I'm not gonna complain. Excellent value for a small to medium sized home theatre and music.

Strength:

Sound Quality, Speaker Connections, Circuitry

Weakness:

Remote Control, Good, but limited to use with Onkyo Products. Could use another optical input

This reciever is much better than the Pioneer I had before it. The Pioneer I used for three months, and dealt with static on the surround channels. Also the sub output on the Pioneer was extremely weak.

I brought the Onkyo home, and the sound quality completely blew the Pioneer out of the water. This reciever also plays just as loud as the Pioneer, while being rated at a mere 55 watts/channel. Onkyo watts vs. Pioneer watts. Sonically, there was a huge improvement in switching from the Pioneer to the Onkyo. The Onkyo does not feature a Midnight Listening mode or Loudness switch, but still outperforms the other in clarity and presence. My only complaint is that the remote is not a multibrand, but hey, for this reciever at this price, I think I can find it in my heart to buy a remote that will do the job from Onkyo.

This reciever handily beats out a reciever priced at least 50 dollars more by pioneer, and most likely would do the same to Kenwood, JVC, and Kenwood.

Strength:

Good price, DTS, AC-3, 5ch Stereo, reasonable powerful

Weakness:

not the cleanest class a/b around

For $300, the admission price is low, and you get quite a lot, 5 channel stereo, optical input and two digital coax inputs for 5.1 channel surround. Uses a Crystal semiconductor IC for DTS and AC3 decoding.
I havent tried 5.1 yet, due to i use it for two channel stereo, decent power, not the cleanest amp around.

For most people its great, and for $300, the admission price is quite reasonable for what you get.

Strength:

Easy to use, 5.1 DD and DTS encoding, plentiful amount of outputs, great sound.

Weakness:

None

I was looking for a receiver to start off my HT system and be the focal point of how I build my HT. I was recommended the Onkyo by a friend of mine who is an Audiophile, and I could not be happier with it. It is very easy to use and puts out some great sound for my DVD's and my CD's (or MP3 CD's). In the future I might need some more power out of the channels, but for now, this is plenty for my small apartment. Considering that the 494 is going for $300, and is very similar in options to the 484, I consider this a steal at over half the price.

Strength:

Price, sound and features

Weakness:

need to play at high volumes for optimum sound

I am very happy with the Onkyo 484 as my home theater receiver. I have a 53" Hitachi Ultravision TV and was using the built in Dolby Pro Logic prior to getting my Onkyo. At the same time I got the Onkyo I purchased 4 Infinity RS2's for my mains and surround speakers. Also in my system is an Infinity BU150 sub. This receiver provides good sound once turned up. At low volumes it could be better. I am thrilled about the sound of the Dolby digital and DTS decoding. The sound trough the digital optical cable is crystal clear. The 5 channel stereo is also great. What I have noticed is that now our room is active and takes us into the movie. What a great way to watch movies. My complete system is as follows
Onkyo 484
4 Infinity RS2's, Main and Rears
Sony DVD player DVP330( bottom of the line and delivers)
Infinity BU150 sub
Bose 141 center channel( still looking for a CC2)
Hitachi 53" SBX TV (The TV is unbelievable)

Strength:

Good Features including Dolby Digital and DTS. A sweet sounding quality amplifier.

Weakness:

Bass output is a little weak, but expect for a quality amplifier. Remote is pretty worthless

The Onkyo is a supuberb product! It is a very good price for the perfomance it gives. The Onkyo has DD and DTS with 3 optional digital inputs, banana plugs for all speaker inputs(rare for lower cost recievers). The amplifier plays great, the distortion rate is just unbelievably low for a product of such price. The watts could use a increase if using 8 to 16 ohm speakers. When comparing the Onkyo to other products it towers above and beyond the comparable Sony STR DE-545, the Yamaha is fairly equal but has no DTS for the same price as the Onkyo. I wouldn't put down Yamaha because they make a awesome product, they just didn't have the features I wanted for the price, Onkyo did I am very happy with the product they make.

For the price this unit performs great. 5.1 and DTS decoders built in all for only $249 can't be beat. It would be better if it had s-video inputs but you can't have it all and still have money left over!
