Actually, what I have is TX-DS575 which is got everything of the 555 model plus the latest DTS format. This is the first time that I buy my home theather system, and I really like this receiver. I strongly encourage people to look into the lastest 575 model (which was released in July, 1999).

I wasn't going to write a review about this piece until I read what the reviewer below wrote about it being a piece of garbage. I thought this a bit odd considering that normally on this site when someone has a strong opinion about a product they more than sufficiently back up their complaints. Leading to my point, I recently purchased this receiver from circuit city for around $400. What a deal considering what other receivers that offer the same features and high current capability. I can't imagine a better deal! This receiver is truly a bargain for the price. It offers everything you would need to set up a sufficient surround system on a budget. I bought a nice set of Polk speakers (rt600's; rk35's; and a nice center channel-245) to go with it to see just how capable this receiver was. It amazed me, it truly drove the polks for excellent sound on all areas of the spectrum.Call me crazy, but this is the best receiver under $500 I've gotten my hands on in awhile. I'd normally throw down a 4 rating because there are better receivers out there... but not at this price damn it.

I have to disagree with the individual who thinks this receiver is a piece of junk. A friend of mine (David, review found below) was so convincing that this was a great receiver that I bought one. Now, Let me say this about myself, I am lagging way behind in any technological advancements of today. I'm even using his computer to write this review. But he was right, this receiver is a huge step up from what I had before. It has convinced me to step in to the digital age. I hooked it up to a whole new set of infiniti's and it blows me away, it is a great sounding receiver, and compared to what others with the same specs have, this is far superior to the rest. 5 speakers!

I got this receiver in Dec, 1998 along with a set of Energy Take 5's. In March I added a Toshiba SD-2109 DVD player to the system. When listening to a Dolby Digital 5.1 chanel source, this system blows me away. I have been very happy with this receiver. It has all the power you could need, a good feature set, and nice quality. The only exception to this is that when I got the DVD player, I discovered a bad DSP in the receiver that prevented me from playing non-5.1 channel DD signals. It took six weeks and many phone calls and frustration to get it fixed, but since I gotten it back it has worked fine. What I don't like about this receiver is:
-The speaker posts are crowded making plugging in the cables difficult
-The remote is adequete at best, but not very well designed.

Even with these quibbles, and the trouble I had with a DSP, I am still satisfied with this receiver. I think it is a good deal for the price.

I bought this receiver 3 months ago, is clean and powerful. I think that has more than 70 watts/chanel. It has a great quantity of features. Sound is nice but colored (come pre-equalized), I have had to change my way to equalizer becouse came with bass and high frecuencies very intensified. For movies is excelent, both with DVD (digital) and VCR (prologic). Tuner by jog is uncomfortable to drive. It's a solid machine and heavy too. Its performance is very good considering its low price. It don't have any hiss like new onkyo 575, but fan sometimes make noise.

This receiver has the worst remote I have ever seen. Luckily, I have a great universal and this doesn't play a factor. My only other complaint is that there is no Mute button on the front of the receiver (just the remote). Those are the only two deficiencies with the receiver. Performance is excellent, set-up is a breeze. This is my third receiver (continuously upgraded). I am powering AR P315HOs with built in 500W subs (excellent speakers by the way, see my review in the speaker section). I couldn't be happier with my system. 5 stars all the way.

Strength:

Wonderful receiver for the price.

Weakness:

FAN, but of course if you're really "listening" to something you won't hear it.

I think if you were lucky enough to get this receiver while it was on sale, open box, etc you got yourself a pretty good deal.

I have one other thing to add for the people who think this receiver only has 70 watts/channel. First of all Sony, Pioneer, other household brands rate their products by MAXIMUN output, whereas better products, Denon, Onkyo, HK, etc rate their products by continous output, therefore 70 watts can be doubled easily for maximum output, without distortion mind you.

I was picking and choosing for 2 month before I decided for this receiver. I purchased it in Germany for DEM 1199 (Europe is expensive for shopping :-( ). I use it with Onkyo CD player DX-7511 and MD recorder MD-2321 connected via the digital inputs. The sound is very clean and powerful, I'm really enthusiastic. I enjoy the multi-source and multi-room capability while listening in my bedroom. The setup and control is efficient and easy to use.The construction and the silver surface are excellent, the only lack are the soft screws (get damaged when opening the case - I'm very curious to what is inside).
Like all Onkyo's receivers it doesn't remember mono/stereo setting for radio presets and you can select the stereo mode only from the front panel. The European version has a RDS (Radio Data System) for receiving FM station names and other info. For stations without RDS you can enter their names manually.
The manual is clear, I agree Kevin the remote volume control is touchy.
I'm fully satisfied with it and I can recommend it to every audio enthusiast. I didn't find any essential lack.

I am very please with my Onkyo as I have been with my last one. this is the third one i have bought.(reciever that is) I had the tx-8110,which I sold to a friend very cheap just to upgrade to the tx-ds454, which did not accomadate my onkyo external EQ, so I took that back to Circuit City and ordered the tx-ds555 from J&R for 534.94 delivered. I don't know where you guys are getting these LOW prices from? But I don't feel robbed at all! Yes the remote is really funky. If the damn buttons are going to be so small and the same size it should have been backlit. I still don't understand the purpose for the multi-channel input but maybe I will. As far as the sound, its very clean and powerful, however the manual advises not to use the EQ in surround modes because of potential damage to the DSP. Which is fine until I come home and the girlfriend ignores or forgets how to turn the tape2 monitor for the EQ off. I don't have a Sub yet but it only has one pre amp output so I am limited to the kinds of subs I can buy. Which seem to be only the very expensive ones. The tuner is very strong with the supplied antenna, and brings in stations very strong, even AM stations. Overall I very pleased to have a reciever that I plan to have for life. The only things I plan to add are a DVD and a Sub woofer. And maybe satelite speakers, to listen to music in other rooms. But that muti-channel input option maybe someone could explain its purpose and use. The onkyo web page sucks! So don't even think about getting support or questions answered there. Peace!

Onkyo is one of the best reciever makes in the whole businesstheir amps are among the absolute best in the solid state reciever class,Period.
all of their amps are rated rms at 6 ohms.

the onkyo TXDS555 is rated 20HZ to 20KHZ at 70x5 watts rms at 8ohms, 100x5 watts rms at 6 ohms

dynamically this litte thing can throw out 140 watts at 4oms and 160 at 2ohms

the sound is sound is richer and more precise than other recievers,
one beef with onkyo is they save all the good features for the high-end
models, but hell it's worth it. check out the new TXDS676 that baby will
be awesome!!
