Everything you need for your audio system

Weakness:

No S video

I looked around for 2 months until I came upon this web-site
and reviewed everyone's opinion. Thanks to this site I purchased the Onkyo 575 from sales@bestpriceaudiovideo.com
for $365.00 and $17.00 ups. The best thing I've invested in
for my home system. Very easy to learn with all the programs
and buttons. After everything is hooked-up, just lay back
and crank it up. Enjoy and have some fun with your purchase.

Strength:

DTS, Dolby Digital, 24/96 PCM processing, OK sound for a cheap receiver

Weakness:

Not quite up to the warm sound of a Creek. Surround connections are not exactly sturdy.

Okay,

Hisssssss.

We have been hearing much stuff and talk about hiss and hum. Well, surprise, no hummmmmmm in my unit. This is more astonishing with my combination of 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers. I know for a fact that my apt is wired in an odd way. Grounds are not exactly perfect. (Try one of those testing plugs from Radio Shack. Actually, they are quite useful.) Given this data, the Onkyo does not have an overt HISS. The unit seems to compensate pretty well for the bad juice in my home. A Denon and an NAD had hummmmmmmmm. With the Denon, hummmmm was audible from my sitting position. With the NAD, hummmmmmm was audible from my sitting position between silent passages. Not good. Esp for . . . 1000 bucks. (By the way, I think the NAD I tried was a B-product. Box was previously opened before and sealed by an East Coast company. The unit had a warm sound when it was pumping music and soundtracks, but the hummmmm bugged me. The dealer in my area may not be an authorized NAD dealer. Not listed on the NAD site. Buyer beware. A return was not exactly without cost. A true NAD dealer might have a unit that does not hum. I like the NAD sound, but the T770 does not have DTS.)

To the point . . . the Onkyo does not have the hum so often noted. In fact, it sounds OK in terms of hum. On the other hand, it is not perfect. For 500 bucks, you should not expect Marantz SR-18 or separate sound. It is not close to that Marantz, but it is tolerable. A tendency towards brightness was apparent with my system. Why? A number of factors might be there.

The receiver is new. Break in time is probably necessary. My system is wired up with Kimber PBJs and Kimber 8TC. This seemed ok for a Creek 4240 SE based system, but the switch to home theater has changed the tonal nature of my system. Kimbers can be revealing and unforgiving in a bright set up.

Right now . . . listener fatigue is a factor. I am trying to adjust the tonal qualities of the system using cables. I am hoping a dose of Harmonic Technologies 6 Nine copper cable stuff will help. Supposedly, the HT stuff is more warm and forgiving. If not, I will try to con my landlord to rewire. (Not an easy proposition.) I am running Gallo Nucleus and Micro speakers, which are pretty unforgiving. On the other hand, I think the set up is workable. I refuse to give up on the Gallos. The soundstaging is addictive.

Perhaps after a good break in period, the unit will warm up in terms of sound. Overall, it is not as bad as a Denon 1600. The NAD had the "sound," but it also had a hum that was not easily ignored. Noise was also audible when switching sources. Hum can not be eliminated with a break in period--as far as my personal experience is concerned. I would rather deal with brightness than hum.

Overall, the 575 is a good value at 500 bucks and under. Not bad really. I hope to upgrade to a better unit like the Marantz SR-19 or 18 in the next two years. The 575 is a good unit to hold you for a while. In fact, it could be the last purchase for many.

Extreme Noise, hiss on all 5 channels

The "Hiss" Problem is true and it concerns almost
every Receiver of the 575 series i've heard! I couldn't believe my ears when i received the onkyo and listened
to it. The noise is very extrem, everything you hear gets
a touch of a tape recording without dolby! I returned
the product and bought a yamaha 795a and now i'm
really pleased. the onkyo receiver has the loudest
"hiss" i've ever had on any hifi-component. even my
old alarm-clock with radio makes less noise than this
one! Don't buy!

Non full function remote (Bass & treble not on remote), No s-video inputs, only one optical and No memory for speaker settings in different Inputs.FM reception

I have this receiver for about 3 months and its a good buy for a under $400 price range. My setup has a samsung 709 dvd player and AR cinimate CS4 speakers connected to it. The lows are thumping even with my passive sub but lacks the Highs. I began to feel the difference about these only after I heard my friends setup which is a DENON 2800 with Polk RM6000 connected to it. The denon's sound was excellent. I probaly think i should not compare the Polks with the AR, but still the sound from the denon was crispier and loud. My onkyo requires me to crank the volume upto around 55+ (with all channel gain at +12) to have a decent sound. Also, I found the centre channel amplification not enough to make the speech channel loud. Also at this volume i could hear a little hiss when i go a couple of feet near the speakers. I dont know if my speakers are of real quality, but what promted me to buy is this review and now feeling for not getting 2800. To me the 2800 is $150 more but is a very good receiver than this but for under $400 this is still a good choice. Listen to AVR 2800 b4 you buy this and make your choice.

Strength:

Easy to use, 5 channel stereo is great

Weakness:

No S-Video on US model
Bass is not as powerful as would like

Bought the 575 and the JVC 888 from cc, took them both home and tried them out for about 1 week. The onkyo was the better of the two. JVC sound quality was not as good. The onkyo does have a hiss which is audible at low volume levels. I sit about 8 feet away and can here it when nothing is playing. Could not notice it at first, but now that I pay more attention to it it is noticeable. The onkyo is a great receiver for the money. Picked it up for 389 shipped. No 3db bass like other onkyo I had, so bass is weak. DVD movies sound great. The receiver does not turn on when I turn on my TV like my old onkyo did. The remote is huge, but useful. Other than the hiss at close proximity, the reciever is great. The 5 channel stereo is wonderful. Unit does get hot, so needs ventilation. No S-video sucks, but for the price cannot beat it.

This is a response to "charley brown" below. The only way you could give this great little reciever a rating of one is if you have lost all touch with reality. I'll try to be charitable and assume that your "creator's" untimely demise has you in such emotional turmoil that you are currently incapable of making a considered judgement. I hope the grief you are experiencing is the true cause of the irrational review you posted. I also sincerely hope that you are only temporarily unbalanced and that you really aren't the compulsive cretinous wretch you appear to be.

needless to say, my score of 5 is to keep you from skewing the ratings off balance any further than you already have.

Enough of crap about the 575 having hiss.it is one of onkyo's best recivers in the price range to date .
people who do not use line conditioners and use bad cables
will even say a $4000 reciver also has hiss even when it doesnt.I had heard it and operated this unit (the asian model) at the onkyo corprate office here when i purchased a onkyo cd player.and i have been following the reviews on this site since the begining of this product launch. The 777
did have a problem but the 575 were absolutely okay.
the reviews should be fair as they influence future buyers.
i had turned the volume to +5 and it was absolute magic
and the sound was lifelike without any traces of distortion.
The speakers used were low end onkyo speakers and the 575
excelled at driving them.so anybody thinking of multichannel
sound should certainly listen to the 575 in a proper setup
before thinking about other brands .and stop giving false reviews just because you dont like a product as it confuses
first time buyers of recievers

Strength:

Ease of design, ease of use, incredible sound at this price point.

Weakness:

No S Video Jacks

I recently started looking for a receiver in the 400-500 range that had Dolby Digital and DTS, and to my surprise the first receiver I had the pleasure of listening to was the Onkyo 575 at my local Circuit City store. I thought initially this was the most incredible sounding receiver I have ever heard in this price category. I was not sure though, so I decided to listen to the Harman Kardon
AVR-300. I was impressed with the Harman Kardon's sound, but I did not think it was worth the extra 130 dollars they wanted for it. The Harman Kardon also did not have the 5 channel stereo for music, so that more or less put it out of my mind.
I still was not sure wheather this was the receiver to get, so I decided to go and check some of the competitors, and see what they had to offer. I checked Best Buy, and they had a Yamaha 1105 receiver. I liked the way the receiver sounded, but did not think it sounded quite as good as the Onkyo. Also, this receiver did not have 5 channel stereo for music. A lot of salesman think that when you ask wheather or not a receiver has 5 channel stereo for music, they think you are talking about Dolby Digital, and I try and tell them that is not what I am talking about.
After I left Best Buy, I decided to go over to Sears who sells Denon and Yamaha. The first receiver I reviewed was the Denon AVR-85. I thought this was a very nice sounding receiver, and it also had 5 channel stereo for music, S video jacks, and several DSP's. I still more or less liked the way the Onkyo sounded, also the Onkyo was cheaper, and I have no real need for S video jacks, so I decided on the Onkyo.
I saw a lot of people say they were getting a hiss sound in their center channel at high levels. I have yet to hear this in my receiver, so I feel very good about the decision I made concerning my purchase.

Strength:

5 channel stereo, speaker configuration and set up

Weakness:

no s-video jacks, should have two optical jacks instead of one

-really enjoy this reciever for both video and music
-volume controls for each channel is really handy you can sit in any part of the room and make it sound like you are in the centre of the speakers
-not alot of useless dsp modes like some for instance the yamaha
-went from a technics 710 to a yamamha 870 to this one i really like the fact that my yamaha had s-video jacks for all the viseo inputs, but i really don't think the video is all that important
