Strength:

Sound, Build Quality,DTS and DD decoding, Useful DSP modes, Remote

Weakness:

moderate power

Excellent, Excellent, receiver for anyone on a budget that isn't willing to sacrifice all-round quality for lesser receivers boasting bloated power ratings, useless features and bad sound.

At first glance the average consumer is left wondering,
“Why should I spend $500 on this thing?” It is only has 70W per channel, only 8 DSP modes, No pretty lights, etc. But…

Onkyo puts more than enough of the things that will actually enable you to make the most of your music and HT experience. Things Like: High Current Amplifier circuitry, 96 khz/24-bit DAC, LucasFilm Cinema Re-EQ, Binding Posts for all channels, Assignable digital inputs, huge transformer, heavy duty heat syncs, 4 S-video inputs/2 out. These things cost… that’s why the el-cheapo receivers opt to give you gimmicks that will only sound good on paper, not in your home.

Strength:

Solid as a Rock. 70 watts of high current beat 100 watts of who knows what.

Weakness:

confusing remote. No equalizer.

I paid a little extra at SoundCitycorp.com cause they have great customer service. I returned the Aiwa cause it made too much noise.

I don't know that much about technical audio-jargon. All I can say that this receiver is excellent.

Onkyo customer service is good. I had a setup question that was answered quickly and expertly.

Strength:

nice remote, 5 ch stereo, nice build

Weakness:

thin sound.

This is a nice receiver. I did not buy this one , but my friend bought it and let me use this for a week. I already owned a nakamichi av8 and since that doesn't have a DTS decoder, i wanted to see what i'm missing.
First its performance on movies. Its great....the decoding is superb with no flaws whatso ever. I could hear each and every dialogue without any problems. DTS is great....but i can do with dolby..:-) So I realized that i wasn't missing much. Every movie came out with a DD version.
Music: Now this is where i found the difference between my nak and this. I could see that the sound was distinctly thin.....The sound from nak is thick and its full. Dire straits sounded much better on the nak than onkyo. I dunno is some ppl like this...but i surely didn't. The bass too was not punchy enough.

Finally, i decided that the nak is a better receiver. Sure it has flaws (no DTS, no 5.1 inputs either, hissing from the surround and center) but its strength (great sound and solid construction, no frills) weighs much more than the flaws.
I'm itching to upgrade....buy something that is better than my $400 receiver that doesn't have DTS decoder, but i'm yet to see a receiver that i can fall in love with. No receiver in the market seems to match the musical clarity of the nak. I know that this column is for the onkyo 575x, but i could not help comparing it with the receiver that i love so much. But i'm sure there are many guys, as this column shows, who love this receiver as much as i do my nak. But the bottom line is....onkyo sound is thin in comparison.
But 5 stars for value....u get a lot for under $400 and 4 stars for the overall performance.

Strength:

True 5X70 watt output with headroom for clean music reproduction. Excellant backlit learning remote.

Weakness:

None - the best product in this price range. The power and distortion figures are conservatively understated, unlike most A/V receivers.

I ordered over the web and tracked the UPS shipment over the web and everything was delivered as promised - 1 day to fill the order and 3 days in shipping. The factory box was packed inside a larger anonomous padded box and arrived completely unscathed. The receiver and accessories were complete and undamaged. Total price including shipping (Midwest to California) was $422.

I purchased 5 dual bananna plugs for the speaker cables and otherwise used the existing cables from the Sony receiver the Onkyo replaced - I use good quality, medium priced, gold plated signal cables, and 12-guage speaker wire. I have large RF and LF main speakers, small center and surround speakers, and no subwoofer.

After the simple digital configuration routine I connected the receiver up to my Wega TV and HTPC. I played the U-571 DTS soundtrack and was blown away by the sound - the main speakers are relatively inefficient acoustic suspension designs with 12" woofers, and the house shook with tight undistorted bass. The receiver effortlessly switched between DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby 2.0, in each case displaying the input format correctly.

I then tried my reference source for good bass - my E. Power Biggs Pipe Organ LP. This is a very musical sounding receiver! I'm now gonna go through my LPs, CDs, and DVDs again!

Strength:

Great, clear and crisp sound. Easy to use and more than enough power.

Weakness:

None.

Before bying my Onkyo, I had read several reviews about it's superb soundquality (compared to other A/V-receivers at a similar price) in different magazines. I spent much time comparing reviews in magazines and on the internet before making my choice. Since I also listen to much CD's, I was very concerned about the performance on stereo. I can assure you, it has super, clear sound quality both on Cinema and music. I am very happy with my purchase. If you are looking for an affordable mid-level receiver then I suggest you look no further.

Strength:

Great sound

Weakness:

I can't stand the remote.

Get something strait about this receiver. The advertised wattage (75watts a channel) is continuous power. This means that the receiver always has 75 watts a channel. The peak wattage is 135. Sony and some other companies attempt to round up customers by advertising 105watts per a channel (this represents burst power). Don't be fooled by wattage output. Make sure that the receiver you purchase is actually what you're looking for in terms of power.

I loved everything about this receiver except its poor remote. Although I love its versatility, the positioning of the buttons annoys me to no end. I'll explain... When you are surfing through channels using the Up and Down buttons the remote works well. However, if you want to jump to a different channel using the number keypad, you have to move your entire hand (the number pad is placed at the complete bottom of the remote). This might not be a concern for the non-OCD user or someone the size of Shaq, but this little problem has convinced me to purchase a different remote.

beutiful construction (silver), quality in dd and music, remote, inputs

Weakness:

low power, few dsp modes, not dsp for listen stereo movies.

6 months ago i dream with this day, the day that with my bad english i post a review of one receiver, and this day has come. But i´m not very happy. i buy the onkyo 575x because the reviews on this page. My experience is:
A saturday morning my wife and me buy the onkyo 575x and we feel how childrens with a toy. we buy new cables, new connection, 1 optical cable for dvd.....etc. we prepare all the things in our home system for put the beautiful onkyo.
- first listen: dvd, i put mission impossible 2 and i need up the volume at 68 (80 is the max), but the sound is amazing, clean, perfect.
- second listen: music from dvd, i put dire straits greatest hits, track 5, i think that guitars are in front of me, and the volume up "only at 55" (80 is the max, sound is clean, loud, natural, real,....perfect.

- third listen: a movie from satellite channel in stereo and dolby surround, well, i use dolby prologic mode, and i don´t like, because 80% of the movie go from the center channel, it´s how i have a tv with only one speaker, only when start the action you can hear others speakers, and more... where are my bass? only when you up the volume very loud you listen a few bass. (more late i found solution at the bass problem). Then i test another dsp modes....
The next dsp mode is the 5 channel stereo. The sound is more better, more bass, more high, all the speaker working, but.....you listen same sound in front of you that rear of you, for cd music it´s ok but for movies is terrorific, you can low the volume of the surround speakers but is the same sound. i don´t like...... Then i test others dsp...more terrorific yet, studio mix, orchestra, all are very bad, and then what to do?
Nothing, i dont listen music many times, i only rent a dvd movie one time at week, and the 90% of the rest i view movies at sat and a video tape, and stereo programs in tv, and then the onkyo 575x its not good for me, is perfect for dd and music (if you work every time with the receiver at max) but is not good for normal listen of stereo programs. yesterday i test in audition room a sony 840 receiver and i think that my next review will this receiver. this receiver that i listen have not hiss on dsp modes (how any reviewers saying). have good power, one dvd movie hear perfect at 50% volume, and the more important, have three dsp modes (cinema sound,a,b,c) and others perfect for listen stereo movies in 5 channel.
if you are an owner of onkyo and you like more bass, connec the mains speaker to active subwofer and the sub to amp, config the mains "large" and subwoofer "no", thanks for all your reviews.

Strength:

Clean & strong sound in stereo/dd/dts/dsp. Great design(silver), good remote.

Weakness:

Seems a little bit weak first but it isn´t.

Hi, I´m a guy from Sweden who are very satisfied with this reciever. I think my old kenwood(-99 i think) couldn´t stand a chance against my onkyo. And we shall not forget that my old kenwood costs at least 1000$ in Sweden.

5 channel stereo is the listening mode that i use most, i think it´s great. TV/Music/Vhs, it works for them all.

DD/DTS is wonderfull,i shiver when i put in The Gladiator in the dvd och press play.... almost better then sex :)

Conclusion:
I think if you have a rather tight economy and want som value for your money, you should go for this Onkyo. The best you can get for 550$(at least in Sweden).

By the way... the original tag for this reciever is 650$ in Sweden. And have some patience with my English... we speak swedish in sweden you know! :)

/Best regars Daniel

Amp may kick-off at lower ohm levels

I've had the unit for about two months now. You have to turn the volume up fairly high for normal listening levels. While playing DVD's (Onkyo 535) at about level=50 the Amp will kick-off. This occured playing The Matrix during scene 7 just about every time. Called Onkyo who said they would call back but never did. Onkyo initially said the speakers (Jamo's) may be operating below 6 ohms at high volumes - I don't listen at high volumes (i.e. level 50) - and isn't this receiver built like a tank I responded. Jamo has yet to return my messages. What crappy customer service from both companies ! Best Price Audio Video helped the the most. They had me disconnect one speaker at a time to try to locate a possible bad speaker and said they would replace if one was found to be bad. I did this, could not determine one, and now the problem has not occured again even with the level at 57 on Amp - that's loud in a relarively small room. All I did was disconnect speaker connections and then reconnect them??? I am glad the problem is gone (for now) but am still concerned. Otherwise, the receiver is great. Setup, controls, listening modes, good remote. The Jamo's sound very good - just a little weak in mid-bass. I would recommend a dedicated center channel though. CC and Crutch. want $500 for this receiver. Best Price Audio/Video for $378 - they seem to have the best prices around and actually tried to help the problem I encountered. I've always owned Onkyo and hope I don't have to change my mind.
