light on remote

Weakness:

hiss from tweeter and mid

Made decision between this and Yamaha RX-V795, made wrong choice? Please post any reply from Onkyo on the hiss at any volume level (but "min"). We have a choice of many receivers at this price level, I find it hard to believe they all hiss.
Several people mentioned the power and weight as "strengths". We are paying $600 - $800 for a surround receiver, the specs. are right on the package... how can the fact that it has 85W / chan be a strength? It's what you paid for. And weight... it sounds like people are trying to find something nice to say. "That's a great looking receiver Charlie". "Thanks, it's really heavy".
Didn't purchase center speaker, instead using speakers from stereo TV. Had to crank the center pre-output to max (+12 dB) and turn the volume way up on TV to get good balance. Anyone else doing this?

Would have given 4 stars if not for the hiss.

Best Equipped Feature Rich Receiver On The Market
for the money!

Weakness:

None

First I want to say that this receiver does not hum!
All of you people that report humming need to invest in
some good cables. It's not the unit, its the operator.
For the guy who submitted the review below, go buy a technics for 99.95 you will be happier. You don't know what you are talking about.

Outstanding power, imaging, clarity, superior remote are just a few of its many attributes. A worthy competitor, what else compares for the price? Nothing!

Strength:

Great design, plenty of power, ease of use.

Weakness:

Hum in center channel, hiss in other speakers.

Tried the Integra version of this reeiver (DTR-6). Been an Onkyo consumer for 10 years. This model also had hum and hiss as described in other reviews. Not terrible, but annoying when you spend this amount of money. Before returning it, I went out and bought my 2nd choice - Denon 2800. Hooked it up exactly the same way, with the same cables - NO HUM or hiss totally quiet! - For music the Denon was much better - 5CH stereo is not to be missed! Kind of disapointed with not being able to keep the Onkyo. Read a review which said Onkyo "knows" about the center channel hum and are looking to fix it...I tried to email them twice - never heard back. Why would they release a 'new' line knowing about the problem before hand?

Hum, Hiss and Tech. Support

Onkyo amazes me. They built a strong reputation in a/v community and than they release the TX-DS 575 and 676. Let me tell you these units should be dismissed automatically when shopping for a new a/v receiver. I bought the 575 after hearinng time and time again about Onkyo's greatness. The noise that emanated from the speakers upon completing setup was greater than that of my 5 year-old Sony shelf system. So I decided to upgrade to the 676 and I witnessed the much dreaded center channel hum. I proceeded to contact tech support numerous times and was given a different story about this issue each time. Some of the technicians said that it was a known issue and was being worked on. One of the Tech. Supervisors actually disavowed an knowledge of the problem and told me that I should check back in afew weeks to see if they learn anything new. Keep a receiver that has a buzz in the center channel for a few weeks to see if they can figure out how to fix it! Forget it! The black transistor box went back to where it came from and I am upgrading to Denon. I think Onkyo has become lazy as a result of its success and as a result they are now manufacturing an inferior product. Yes, the price is right, but the sound isn't even close. I advise all who are looking at the Onkyo line of receivers to look elsewhere.

HISS!

I don't know why there's such a raging debate. It's obvious from reading all these reviews of this series that some units have the hiss/hum and some don't. I'm on my fourth 676 for testing... that's how much I like this receiver. BUT - I have had the hum AND hiss in 2 of the 4 units, and the hiss in 3 of the 4. The hum only showed up in number 2 and 3 after it had been powered on for several hours. I returned the first unit before testing it because the faceplate was damaged. I agree with all the positive reviews here... great stuff, great unit. But I think I'm going to have to give up on Onkyo.

If you don't have extremely sensitive ears - and I'm not slamming anyone - you may not hear the hiss, or you may be lucky and have a unit that simply does not have it. When there is no source playing OR when a source is playing very quietly, I can hear the hiss from 8-10 feet away. I do NOT have to crank it up to hear it... in fact, the hiss stays at the same level until you crank it to what would be (IMHO) unlistenable levels if a source were playing. All that said, it's probably tolerable to lots of folks who may rarely listen to music at very low volumes.

Each receiver I've tried had the cross-talk between sources, too, but I reluctantly accepted that because I could only hear it when there was no source playing, AND when it was cranked. I say "reluctantly accepted" because although the cross-talk only appeared in unrealistic conditions, an $800 receiver simply should not have that problem.

A word about my system... I don't spend thousands of dollars on cables and equipment, but my 10 year old Yamaha exhibits only a miniscule amount of hiss when placed in the exact same spot with the same cables and components, and then, only when it's really turned up high. I've used my old Klipsch KG2.5s, my new Polk RT55s and tested an Infinity HTS-10 set on each Onkyo and on my old Yamaha.

If you can find a unit without the hiss and hum, don't hesitate to buy it. Me? I'm tired of dealing with it now. I think my rating of "average" is fair considering its problems.

Cheers,
Lee Gray

Strength:

Deep solid bass, great price

Weakness:

None at this price range

Before I bought this receiver, I had some apprehension after reading articles about the hisses and hums but nevertheless I decided to give it a try before making a final decision. It was down to the Denon AVR-2800, Sony DB-930 and this. What finally decided my mind was the power of this model as compared to the rest. At this price range, you can't go wrong. There weren't any hisses or hums but great sound from the speakers connected to this receiver. Coupled with a 3yr warranty, this is the best value for money.

Loud Hum and Hiss from Center and surround speakers

I was really happy to purchase the receiver.I have purchased my Onkyo TX-DS676 a month and a half ago from Circuit City . I used Definitive Technology home theater speakers (Pro Cinema 100). That was the first time I experienced the loud hiss/ hum from the center and surround speakers and loud hum from the subwoofer. Thinking that the problem was from the speakers and the wiring, I returned the speakers and purchased new Polkaudio RT 1000 front speakers with polkaudio center and surrounds (Cs 300 for center). I purchased and used monster cable to connect the speakers to the receiver. The hiss/hum from the center (loudest) and surrounds was really loud. Thinking that the problem was from grounding, I connected my system including TV(Magnavox), VCR (Toshiba), DVD (JVC), and Echostar Satellite to a Monster Power surge by Monster Cable. The problem was not solved. Finally I found out that humming and hissing is gone if I connected the center and the surrounds without the front speakers. I was also surprised that the sound of Hum/Hiss was gone if I connected only one front speaker with the center and surrounds. but the sound would come back later. I have called onkyo about it and written emails but the only answer I got is that they have no such problem. Its frustrating and planning to put the receiver to repair already. If I have a choice now, I will not buy another onkyo again.

99 model

Kick ass receiver. Blows away the Yamaha. For a brand newpiece sound city did great at 599. Only problem I had was I received a 99 model at first. The minute I hooked up my sub the unit was hissing and humming from both the sub and the center channel. Soundcity made good and send me a new model, I called Onkyo to ensure that this one was a 2000 and now I could not be happier. Not only did the 99 hum and hiss there was no bass. With the 2000 there is silence when there is suppose to be silence and plenty of bass when there is suppose to be bass. I strongly recommend this receiver. It has all the connections you need. If I could just find a better center channel than the POS BOSE VCS 10. I know people sware by BOSE, but this center channel stinks. Can anyone recommend a center channel for around $200?

Why does this idiot below say the receiver sounded goog but had a hiss noise and then a channel blew and then give one star. This is obviously a defected unit, like yourself, that can occur to any product you ever buy. Take it back, get another one, and stop crying! It's not like everyone you get will have this problem!!
