Strength:

Ease of setup, binding posts on all channels, preouts

Weakness:

Receiver won't take all my IR codes

No hum, no hiss. Got it from Onecall.com for @$565 -- they are one of the four remaining Onkyo certified online dealers (thus if you do get a crappy 676, you can warranty the work). Supposedly, the hum/hiss deal was with the earliest models, and the newer ones don't have the problem. Onecall.com says all theirs are new. (I don't work for them, or have any other affiliation with them, but I've gotten great cust. serv. from them, so that's why the props.)

Not sure if it's my sub, or the receiver, but there only 1 RCA for the sub out, and my sub has RCA stereo in's (2 RCAs). So I had to Y-Cable it.

For some reason, the remote won't "learn" some of my other remote codes. No clue why. I'm going to try other "modes" to see if it can learn in those.

The sound quality is great. The OSD is nice too. I'm happy.

Strength:

Multiple digital coax/optical input connections.
Ease of use and setup.
Learning remote. Capable of learning inputs from other remotes.

Weakness:

No connections for an equalizer.

Purchased this item from Bestpriceaduiovdieo from one of their many Ebay auctions. Unit has been superb in performance. No hiss/buzzing from the center channel as has been reported in earlier units. This unit is refurbished and came w/one year warranty.

Also upgraded my speaker wire to some heavy duty (12 ga) Recotan wire, which increased the volume level of the system. Have not yet upgraded my speaker system from my old (10 years) floor speakers. But the system is still awesome in 5-channel Dolby Digital & DTS modes. "Perfect Storm" and "Twister" in particular were awesome. Will be getting "urassic Park" for Xmas. the T-Rex scene should rule.

Strength:

Lots of features, nice OSD, power, clean and detailing sound, absolutely NO hiss or hum!

Weakness:

NONE!

I share my experiences because many of you may plan to upgrade to this model from the 3- 4- or 5 series of Onkyo. My first intention was to purchase a Denon AVR-2801 and I was digging deep in this category of receivers. Yes, I ended up exchanging my Onkyo's!! By written materials I could not see clearly that the 676 was so different from 575 (it hardly comes out from a brochure). But it is different! It is much closer to TX-DS777 (THX) than to 575! Having used 575 for more than a year I still have a hell lot of new features with the 676. The favourites are:

- hearable extra power 5x115 W at 6 Ohms
- On sceen display (superimposable, user friendly)
- MPEG decoder built-in
- "nameable" input sources
- no noise/hiss/hum/buzz at all even at max volume!
- intellivolume
- direct mode (no subw, flat tone)
- strong built, reliable

I start to rediscover my CDs and DVDs even after the 575 model! 676: absolutely five stars, best buy for this money!

My music/HT system is the following:

Pioneer DV-525 DVD player
Onkyo TX-DS676 receiver
B&W DM 603 S2 front speakers bi-wired
B&W cc6 center bi-wired
B&W DM 302 rear speakers
B&W ASW-1000 subwoofer
Loewe Calida 84 cm 4:3 TV, S-video connection
Thomson VHS video

And this system R O C K S the house!

Strength:

Great sound, Solid build, Easy to use, Good remote, Well priced

Weakness:

Not much - Maybe the lack of digital (optical) output as found on the TX-DS777

I've decided on the Onkyo since it sounds great, Has all the right features and comes at an attractive price. The rest of my system looks as follows :
DVD - Sony 525 (Similar to 530 in USA) - Thinking of keeping this unit.
CD Player - Onkyo 7222
Center speaker - Boston Acoustics CR2
Main Speakers - Boston Acoustics CR8
Sub - Boston Acoustics CR400
Rear Speaker Quadral Maxi
“B” Speaker – Boston Acoustics CR6
Unfortunately I have to work on a budget - In this price range I believe that this is the best setup.

There seems to be a "problem" of hissing Onkyo receivers (according to this forum) ... I've contacted a majority of the Onkyo dealers in the Bay Area and all of them assured me that "their" receivers had absolutely no problems.

After trying out various receivers in the price range ($1000) - and there are MANY, MANY to choose from - I brought home the TXD777 and tried it out. It performs perfectly.

Thus, it appears that on the west coast, the Onkyo receivers are what you can expect: great quality, high performance, plenty of inputs (s-video), a high-current drive, discrete components (enormous transformer), dozens of DSP modes (though a majority won't be used by myself), and the THX-Select certification for performance standards and processing.

The receiver has a terrific build and is powers my Mission 774's beautifully. Great for HT as well as pure stereo.

Strength:

Who cares?

Weakness:

Hum / Hiss

I had major problems with distortion on all channels with this receiver. So, I went out and bought a Denon AVR-2800. This receiver is quiet - the way a receiver should be! It's also the same price for the same options.

Forget Onkyo, buy a Denon!!

Strength:

Great Remote,Very Easy Setup, the Display, you can ID your Video inputs and radio stations.

Weakness:

no Digital output like 777. Also have center channel problem, it hums with DVD,V1,V2,or V3 input selected.Worse with TV on.

No problem so far with 676 except center channel problem.Have called Onyko once allready to give them my name.Said they were working on problem.Time for another call. Was within time to take back receiver after found hum problem but receiver sounds too good.Brought DTS version of Private Ryan and it sound incredible.Seperation and imaging of both DD and DTS decoders are amazing. It's hard to go back and play tapes and even my laser disk on Pro Logic, which I did not have before, only Dolby Surround.I am pushing Bose Accoustimas 6 that has me running volume around 45-50 for a movie, which worries me a little. I use a Toshibe 2109 DVD player( a very good DVD for 260$) and the system just looks and sounds perfect.Giving 5 stars rating since I saw how Onyko took care of people with 777 and same hum problem.

Strength:

Clean power, learning remote, front a/v and s-video inputs, great for Home Theater!

Weakness:

None so far.

Tried all three units above. Went with the 676 because it met my needs the best and was a great deal ($599 delivered). Beat the Denon in the home theater department, but Denon had slight edge on the music side. The Denon remote is horrible!!! Onkyo's did a great job with their remote. I have programed it to control everything! DVD,VCR,Cable,TV,CD!! Also liked the Onkyo 5 channel stero over the Denon's. Over all the like the Onkyo 676. No humm or hiss from the speakers either! If you do decide to get one and it does hiss just contact Onkyo and they will overnight you a brand new unit. Good luck

If you are interested in purchasing a brand new, post-recall Onkyo TX- DS777 for only $739, or a brand new TX-DS676 for only $579, or a refurbished TX-DS939 (with Onkyo 1 year full warranty) for only $1229, or a brand new TX-DS575 for only $369, (all non-refurb come with 2 year Onkyo warranty) all from an authorized distributor, please read on....

I am also going to be purchasing one of these receivers, however, I am looking to buy it for an even cheaper price, by referring many
interested buyers to the actual seller in exchange for a discount. (I am not the actual seller, but I bought from the seller previously, and he is really reputable and very reliable). Please send me an e-mail stating all questions you have and noting that I referred you to this seller, and I will then forward the email to the seller, where he will then contact you. At that point, I will also send to you the
information of how to purchase, website, and the seller's e-mail so that you can contact him first if you wish. On his web site he lists all of his credentials, return policies, warranty, authorization as an official distributor, a 1-800 number, etc. This is totally legit, I'm just trying to get a discount for myself and made a deal with this dealer that if I get him a great deal of exposure and refer a good number of sales, then he'd give me a discount on the 777. So please e- mail at adb3@lehigh.edu if interested.
