Strength:

DVD audio

Weakness:

Lacks bass listening to music only

Had the unit less than one week and the right front channel
stops working. The receiver then shuts off. Turned it back on and the receiver shuts off after a minute. I was able to listen to music the short time the unit was working and limited video. Saving Private Ryan did sound good on DVD.
I was not satisfied with the bass response while listening to CD's. My old Yamaha R-9 from 1985 sounds a whole lot better listening to CD's versus the Onkyo 777.

Power and Remote

I bought the JVC 888 (100 x 5) receiver for $400 and found the unit had a lot of noise. Gave it to my daughter. Checked out the Denon 3300, sounded great, but for the $800 price tag, didn't handle bass the way I wanted. It did have the composite video, but with the Onkyo you simply go direct to the TV, probably a better solution anyway. I like the Onkyo 777. It allows me to pre-out to a M&K MX-200 sub the left and right fronts to lighten the load on my Jamo 7.7 mains which are rated down to 35 hz. This keeps the sub out open for connection to my PSB 3i sub for the LFE. I had an Onkyo receiver 10 years ago and found it had plenty of dynamic headroom, which made picking this unit a no brainer once I concluded I was willing to spend $750 freight included from Joe at Sound City.

Strength:

Clean power, Thx,dts, dolby, onkyo name brand, handsome, nice remote, display dim functions, can control power to each channel separately. So many more...

Weakness:

Remote takes some time to figure out because it "Learns" your other remotes. Once you get the hang of it ,it's awesome. I contol all my componets from it, plus it has macro control.

I bought mine as a refurb model on ebay. Looks and works great. Factory warranty from onkyo as if it were new.
I went from a separate componet system to this Onkyo receiver and I'm pleased with it's performance 100%.
I had reservations switching to a receiver because I didn't want to sacrafice clean power, tight bass, etc...
But this unit delivers. You WON'T find a better unit in this price range that has all that it has(thx,dts,etc...)
You'll be in the $1800- $2400 range to find one. Sony has one thats close but not quite as good.

Strength:

Great Value, Sound Quality, Power, THX Certification, DTS, Dolby Digital. Lots of connections.

Weakness:

None found so far.

This being our first AV Receiver, we were a little concerned about paying so much for a stereo. After shopping around, It became apparent that you do get what you pay for. We had not planned on spending more than $500 or so dollars, but In the case of the Onkyo, the sound and build quality helped justify the extra expense ($850). The only problem is we now have less money to spend on speakers. Any one have any recommendations on a good, cheap (under $1,000) 5.1 speaker setup?

Strength:

Great construction and layout

Weakness:

Poor Quality control from Onkyo

This unit has all the bells and whistles you could want. Good remote, I replaced 5 remotes even a digital cable converter remote with nearly all functions learned....great!

The first time I bought this receiver i experienced a low hiss and hum whenever the TV was on and video 1 (convertor) or Video 2 (VCR) was selected. I called Onkyo Locally and they said it was an enviroment problem not a reciever problem, and they would fix it by adding a re-arranging some ground wiring. I decided instead to swap the amp at the dealer first.

Too my surprize the second unit which was the dealers showroom unit was perfect...absolutely no audible hiss or hum on any channels. I changed nothing on the wiring from the original unit, before I swapped it I checked, double checked and recheck wiring, connections and proximity of the unit to the TV. many times before calling anyone due to the reviews I have read here. The only relief I could bring was reduce (not eliminate) the hum by separating the TV and receiver

I am now very happy with the unit however I need alot more time to allow it to break in.

I am running into a pair of Kef refence 103.2 fronts with a reference 100 center, A Paradyme PS 1000 sub and Paradyme 177 rear effect speakers.

The only reason for not giving this unit two top ratings was the quality control issue and the lack of knowledge (suppossed) on the part of the dealer and Onkyo about the problem. I will be calling Onkyo next week to let them know that before modifying other customers units it should be swapped out and the faulty unit refurbed.

Strength:

1. Ample power
2. Warm, musical sound

Weakness:

1. Amp section not as clean as previous Onkyo receivers

I replaced my Onkyo TXDS-747 with this unit, and it is truly an upgrade. The equal power to all channels in the 5 channel mode is truly breathtaking. Anyone who is a die hard 2 channel advocate, should give 5 channel surround a serious listen. I don't believe the amplifier is as clean as my 747, but it still sounds better than the other receivers in this price range. Overall, this unit gets a strong reccomendation.

Strength:

Too many to list

Weakness:

tuner is fuzzy, remote could be better, volume doesn't seem to change from 1-5

dollar for dollar i cannot even begin to imagine a better receiver. this is the ROY JONES JR of receivers! i am happy with all aspects of this machine from the sturdy weight to the simple to navigate system.

i admit that i was scared that the fuzzy hissing noises would be there, but thankfully they were not.

to reiterate, the only major problem i have with this receiver is that the volume doesn't change enough when you have it on very low levels - am i the only one with this problem? most people probably won't bother having a $1000 receiver if you can't blast it but i live in an apt and porn can't be that loud! =P and one more thing - i think this is my fault or maybe this is like this on ALL receivers but why does the optical input take precedence over the other inputs? my playstation2 if on comes on despite me not having switched the input over -

i was looking at denon's 3300 - sony 555es, some HK models, and some other "cheaper" receivers - to be quite honest, the denon and onkyo came slightly ahead, both in price and performance measures. ultimately i decided that i would see which was cheaper on the web after listening to them. the 555 was attractive with its remote control but at $300 more, i figured i could stave off a cool remote.

i highly advocate oncall.com - their sales people weren't pushy, everything arrived on time and if you do a little cranking you can even get a coupon tossed in.

hope this helps -

Strength:

Well built,Great remote,Reasonably good sound quality, good processing and dsp modes

Weakness:

not as loud as i would have liked, confusing manual

This review is actually for the TX-DS787.It's my 2nd A/V reciever and the best i could afford as i am only 16.Compared to the Pioneer the processing is better, it runs much cooler, has better amps and excellent channel seperation and transient response. Not as loud as my 2channel seperates (Crown PB-3...540 watts,.005 THD,110 S/N)and pioneer preamp,Denon CD

Here is my breakdown of it's performance:
2ch stereo:4 stars
5.1,6.1 ch. Surround:4 stars
DSP Modes:4.5 stars
Remote:5 stars
Value:3.5 stars

This is my system:
Onkyo TX-DS787

Bryston 2B power amp(i am using this and the front channels of the onkyo in bi-amped configuration for my mains)

Onkyo AO-8067 integrated amp for rear 7.1 surrounds

Mitsubishi 50" Projection

Mitsubishi DD-4001 DVD player

Infinity CS-3007 Mains

B&W Center ch.

Infinity RS-4 surrounds

JBL Control 1 plus 7.1 surrounds

AR S-300 sub

The onkyo performs quite well for the money. If you have between 700 and 1000 dollars to blow get this or the denon.
If you don't need the one extra amp channel get this (6.1 as opposed to 7.1, But the onkyo still has the pre-amp outputs)if you are on a budget get the Technics DA-8 or
DA-10 from ETRONICS.COM. They offer almost as good of performance for much less (300 for the DA-8.They are fan cooled, which is rare at this price, beefy as hell and sound great. They also have a detachable power cord.
