Strength:

Digital ins/outs; lot's of connections; learning remote

I bought a new 32" TV at the same time, got everything hooked up, no hiss! I really liked the digital inputs and have everything, including DAT player and cable box, hooked up via digital inputs. I had a question to tech support, they e-mailed me within two days. Overall great product. Ya'll who have that hiss ought to unplug your TV and see if you still get it, or move your ear more than 2" away from the speakers.

Strength:

Great home theater with a Klipsch speaker set.
Solid warranty, but only if you buy it new and from an authorized dealer. Price was great, although other reviewers on this page got jipped big time(see below)

Weakness:

None yet.

Great receiver. No complaints. The best place to buy this is onecall.com. They're one of only a few sites that's an authorized Onkyo dealer (check out Onkyo's site) and are by far the least expensive of those sites. Onkyo says on their site that they don't honor warranties for any receiver purchased from any unauthorized dealer. The service centers might slip up and do repairs under the warranty occasionaly from those sites, but don't count on it - Onkyo is cracking down big time!!! Also, buying a refurbished product is stupid. If you're going to get a high end reveiver, do it right - don't take a stupid risk. Fact: reburbished units have higher rate of problems that models purchased new.

And to those of you who bought from Circuit City - you're just plain dumb. They're a total rip off. You got screwed. You found audioreview.com, but you couldn't take 5 minutes to find an authorized internet dealer selling it for $150 less than you paid!!! And the guy who paid $999: what the hell is wrong w/ you: you were scammed to the tune of $350. LOL!!!

Hey Dan, this one's for you bud. Yes, I agree that the unit is great- I've had mine for a year.

As far as someone buying from Circuit City, well, I did. Just plain dumb, eh? Well, after your valid rant about purchasing from an authorized dealer, and calling people stupid for buying from anyone but; how can you qualify my stupidity of purchasing local? Especially when there have been some well-documented problems with this unit.

IT's not a matter of stupidity; it's a matter of what "peace of mind" is worth to someone. When I bought my unit a year ago, I might have saved $100 purchasing mail-order.( and I still paid 200 less than MSRP) I did my homework, researched reviews, and complaints, and took a chance.
But if mine takes a crap, I unhook it, and drive about 7 minutes away to the dealer I purchased it from, and dump it in his lap. Done deal. I have a face to deal with, and it was a deliberate, intellegent decision that I made carefully. (now, a year later, and $350 savings; THAT'S a different story..)
Those who purchase online, not only have to return it, but box it up, ship it( and call the dealer and get a return authorization!), and twiddle your thumbs while you wait for the dealer to receive it and decide what to do. Now, just how much is your time worth, not to mention what you have spent on shipping? Now who's stupid over $100? Not to mention, what little tax I did pay, went into my local community.
Personally, I think it's stupid to buy a unit that has had reported problems, anywhere but locally. But that's a decision you have to make yourself, and if it's worth it to you, so be it.
Stick to the reviews and quit belittling people. There are other people with functioning brains here, too.

Strength:

Great funtionality and versatility, great looks, gobs of inputs, and power, power, power.

Weakness:

Have had some problems with the tuner....

This is my first crack at HT and I got every dollar's worth. The Onkyo has everything I was looking for in a centerpiece for my home theatre system. The power is great, but still delivers a clean & crisp sound. It really makes my Polk speakers sing. I was surprised at how easy it was to set up, although the manual was not all that helpful. The remote is great, and easily controls other Onkyo products with via the R-1 connection. The on-screen programming is simple to use and really made the set-up easier. This receiver performs excellently whether we are listening to CD's , or watching VHS or DVD's. That was the real selling point for me--some of the other receivers in this price range were not quite as dynamic as the Onkyo, not to mention it outperforms many out of its price range (aka Harmon Kardon--what a ripoff!!) DD and DTS are absolutely stunning, and when in 5-channel stereo mode any CD fills the apartment with full, deep bass and crisp highs. In this price range, there really is nothing comparable that I have found. For anyone building their first HT system, I would strongly recommend this unit (but you had better hurry, the model has been discontinued for the DS-787 at a much heftier price tag!) I picked up the DS-777 at NFM for cheaper than the DS-676, which is just criminal.

The setup:

Onkyo TX DS-777
Onkyo DX C380 6-disc carousel CD changer
Onkyo DV S535 DVD player
JVC S-VHS player
Hitachi 27"
Polk PSW 450 subwoofer
Polk CS245i center
Polk RT25i fronts and surrounds

The only problem I have run into so far is with the tuner, but it does not appear to be typical for this unit (according to the repair guy) and is rather minor. That's what warranties are for I guess.

Strength:

Lots of power, clean warm sound. The remote is great,on screen display.

Weakness:

None

I have had this receiver about 3 weeks. The sound is very clean & compliments my speakers nicely.( Def Tech Pro Tower 400s,lots of base if needed ,center speaker Def Tech C-2 & Bose 301s for surround )I have experienced no hiss or bleedover from this receiver, checked for that first thing after reading other reviews.I am using monster cable & monster speaker wire for all connections.
I also checked out the Denon 3300 & the Yamaha 995 ,Both excellent receivers . I just like the features & sound of the Onkyo 777. I paid 800 dollars for mine so I would give it a 6 star value rating if I could .

HUMMMMMMMM and Hissss

I just bought the 777 2 days ago... thought they fixed the
HUMMMmm and Hisss problem....But NO.
Does anybody know if this was fixed for sure??? what are the manufacture dates and model number to stay away from???

If I am watching a movie and the dialog goes quiet it sounds like I'm listening to an old scratched LP....whats up with that.. ONKYO should be bending over backward to fix this.

If I don't hear of a solution soon, 27 more days, I going to reture the unit. Any ideas of something better?
The integra DTR 7 did not appear to have the problem

Strength:

Crisp, clear sound with very good speaker separation. Dolby Digital, DTS, THX certified and 5.1 channel input for future upgrade and enough inputs for your every need.

Weakness:

None

This receiver is one of the best that I ever have owned. It is quality built and the sound is excellent, especially Dolby Digital and DTS with THX added on DVD's and Laserdisc. I have owned Kenwood, Pioneer, Yamaha, and Sony recievers but none of them have made me happy or performed as well as this receiver. I hear detailed sound I've never heard before even with my cheap speakers (Yamaha speakers), which I've used with my other receivers, but I plan on upgrading my speakers to THX certified now that I have this Onkyo. I like the on screen tv displays with the option to limit the subwoofer from too much bass from the playing source so that it does'nt blow. Another feature I like is listening to audio CD's in 5 channel stereo sound. It also has a 5.1 channel input for future upgrades just in case they come up with something better then DD or DTS and they have enough muti-inputs on the back of the receiver for your every need. I recommend this reciever to anybody and I won't have to ugrade mine for many years to come. Thank god because I've spent too much money on mistake purchases. You live, you learn. Good luck on your purchase!!.

Strength:

lots of power, clean sound, flexible input settings.

Weakness:

no tone level, speaker level setting for individual sources and listening modes.

this is my first HT setup coming from mid/hi-end stereo separates and am pleased with the sound. The digital processing is fairly clean without added noise. I especially like the 5ch stereo setting and direct listing modes for music. Great value for the price.

UGLY FRONT (WELL BORING VISUALLY)

HAVING HAD ENORMOUS PLEASURE FROM OWNING THE 727 FOR OVER THREE YEARS, WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL I LOOKED AT THE 777. AS USUAL I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE NOW CUSTOMARY HEAVY BUILD OF THE ONKYO THE HISSING MENTIONED IN OTHER REVEIWS CONCERNED ME BUT I MUST HAVE A LATER UNIT , AS MINE IS SILENT AT ALL LEVELS. I HAD ACTUALLY PURCHASED THE MARANTZ SR 8000 WHICH IS AS SIMILAR ON SPEC AS YOU CAN GET ,HOWEVER THE VENDOR ,(WORLD EXCHANGE .COM) COULD NOT GIVE ME A N ACCURATE DATE FOR DELIVERY AND AS I HAD ALREADY WAITED OVER TWO WEEKS I DECIDED TO GO WITH MY ORIGIONAL CHOICE. MY ONLY RESERVATIONS WERE THAT THE REMOTE THAT COMES WITH THE 777 IS A LITTLE CHEESY BUT WORKS GREAT, THE REMOTE WITH THE MARANTZ IS THE 2000 WHICH RETAILS FOR $300, WHICH I RATIONALISED IS WHERE THE PRICE DIFFERENCE IS ($1349 TO $1099 RETAIL).SOUND AND FEATURES ARE COMPRABLE , THE MARANTZ IS PRETTIER! I WAS ABLE TO PUCHASE MINE FOR $760 FROM THE ABOVE DEALER AND SO FAR AM VERY HAPPY. BEWARE IF YOU ARE UPGRADING THESE UNITS ARE 3.5" DEEPER THAN PREVIOUS MODELS. MY INSTRUCTION BOOK WAS FINE , BUT YOU DO NEED TO READ IT!!(THIS WILL SOLVE 90% OF THE PROBLEMS I HAVE READ ABOUT

Another satisfied Onkyo customer. ZERO hiss. I purchased the refurbished TX-D777 from www.esupercenter.net for $600. After listening to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, it was like I heard this CD for the first time. This receiver rocks and so did the room. Compared to my old Sansui 8080DB (70's technology) this receiver blows it away in every category.

The setup is not as bad as some reviews make it sound. Take your time and read the manual. Great remote is easy to program to run all your components.

Components:
Onkyo TX-D777 Receiver
Onkyo DV-C501 DVD/CD (Another great Onkyo product)
Cerwin Vega VS-120 Speakers (Good quality budget speakers with awesome Bass)
