Strength:

DD, DTS, THX (select), 5-ch stereo, backlit/learning remote, lot's of power

Weakness:

NONE, really (only maybe: the silver plated connects and no multiroom ability

It's my third Onkyo receiver and I can't say they let me down. I had my doubts that it would surpass my 'old' 838 integra, but it did. It has more power, the sound is clearer and more transparant, it has THX and DTS-modes, 5-channel stereo (great for party's). The backlit/learning remote is also super. Now I got just one remote instead of 6. There are some small details wich they left out on the 777 compared to the 838. It hasen't got gold-plated connects anymore and the multiroom ability has gone (small details). Overal it sounds GREAT !!!
I have no experience with the hissing/humming noise in either of the channels ,yet.
My setup is:

Philips 32PW9713/12 T.V. 16:9 100Hz
Philips VR969 /02 S-VHS VCR
Onkyo TX-DS777 Receiver
Onkyo DX-7711 Integra CD-player
Onkyo MD-2511 MD-player
Onkyo DV-S525 DVD-player

Strength:

Powerful amp, straightforward design

Weakness:

hisssss.............

I'm bummed. I read all the reviews and just wouldn't believe that I might have a problem. "They must have fixed this problem by now..." SURPRISE! They hadn't and I do, have a problem that is. I've got the dreaded hiss. The unit spent it's first 2 months in a shop that was 60 miles from my house. They did the "tech bulletin repair" but it didn't work. Took it back for another try, they were never able to fix it. I spoke with Onkyo customer service. They advised that the hiss was caused by the unit being too close to my TV but that they would be able to fix it for me. Ok, so I sent the unit back to Onkyo at my expense ($48). They returned it after a couple of weeks and initially it didn't hiss. YAHOO! However, a few days later my hissy gremlins returned. My TV doesn't even have to be on. For that matter, the unit doesn't even have to be near my TV (I unhooked the thing and set it up in my living room where there is no TV). As soon as the volume gets to 1 or above I get a noticable hiss in all channels in DD 5.1 or THX mode. I didn't use cheap wire and, due to space constraints, the unit has to be near my TV (not that I believe thats the cause anymore). I'm VERY frustrated. I got a great deal on this unit and am a big Onkyo fan but am so bummed about the hiss I just don't use this thing.

Strength:

Heavy duty construction, beautiful sound, THX, Digital, many music modes

Weakness:

Very complicated set-up

After finally getting it all set up with a new Onkyo DVD/CD changer and Polk speakers (2 front, 2 back, 1 center)...it sounds great with music and movies. The set-up was complicated and had to call Onkyo Help Desk several times for help getting everything to work correctly. I might add that the Help Desk Tech (Scott) was great to work with and very patient with me over the phone and by email too. If you need help...call Scott (ext. 368). Onkyo had previous gotten bad press on their help desk, but I didn't have that experience with Scott.

No hissing problems like others mentioned in earlier
reviews.

The sound is awesome (hate that word, but best describes the sound perfectly). I would highly recommend this digital receiver in a heart-beat for under $1000...can't go wrong. Buy on-line, will save you some tax $$$. Got this receiver from Bestbestaudiovideo.com (recommeded by some of your reviewers on this site) for $700 plus shipping delivered right to my door within a few days after I placed the order.

My stereo system:
Onkyo DS-TX777
Onkyo DVD/CD 601
Polk RT1000i (front)
Polk RT35i (back)
Polk CS-4000 (center)
Velodyne subwoofer
Sony 32 TV (would like a larger one after I get thru paying off for this new system)
Panosonic Hi-fi VCR

Just a note that I wanted to purchase this receiver for its THX Select certification. I had already chosen to purchase the M&K 750THX speaker set. However the M&K fronts are rated at 4ohms and the Onkyo says to use at least 6ohm speakers. Not wanting to blow the amp and wanting it to be covered under warranty I consulted Onkyo. They told me not to use the 4 ohm speakers with the amp!!! So the M&Ks took preference and I ended up with the Denon 3300 instead.

I have still been unable to get an answer from anyone about the THX Select specifications. A recent magazine review said the M&Ks fronts are 4 ohms "per THX specs." So why does a THX Select Receiver rate at 6 ohms? Hmmm.

I rate it at 5s so I don't screw up the average.

Strength:

Has plenty of power and the setup manu is really good lots of control over the room as far as size and speaker adjustments and distants...I had a Dolby pro logic system before this receiver really makes you feel that you are in the movies..Remote is setup nicely...

Weakness:

none found yet

I have sold electronics for years never really look at onkyo before decide to give it a try man was I surprised it has plenty of power and control it lets you setup everything on screen so if you dont have a video input dont buy it you wont be able to setup up all the options ..If your in the market for a new reciever I would highly recommened this receiver...

Strength:

Great sound stage, nice mid detail in 5.1, high current amps

Weakness:

customer service

I got this unit to replace a 3 year old sony in my new theater. when i unpacked and hooked up the product, it sounded great with a very cohesive front soundstage. after about 3 weeks, it would no longer power up.

i sent the unit in for repair in the middle of may and then got it back with a note saying nothing was wrong. took it home and it immediatly returned to it's former problem. Now, six weeks later, they have allegedly found the problem and will have it repaired "soon", whatever that means. the repair shop said that onkyo was unable to supply them with the parts for repair until today (5 weeeks and 3 days after taken in). Not so great.

Strength:

From the start exhibits less of the associated tendencies that plague nebies. The unit presents outstanding tonality. Never sounds overly hard or metallic. The level of surround processing is first rate, panning is razor quick and precise.Very accurate, if it is on the disk you will hear it. With correct front speaker placement puts you in the center action. Driving ability for Digital and DTS enormous. In all, good honest sound, no bull...
Please note that whatever is mentioned is only my personal opinion

Weakness:

Takes a while to settle in.
ADVICE ON - Center humm, possibly caused by poor shielded TV or unit earth problem on main power source. RETURN unit to dealer for minor modification to earth on unit.Diagram to be supplied by Onkyo Corp.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better alternative.

Strength:

Power, Remote, Sound, Build Quality

Weakness:

Chasis is very deep. may not fit in all entertainment centers.

This is repost of I review that I put under Onkyo 777.
This being my first home theater receiver, I was not prepared for the huge improvement in sound over my old unit. This Onkyo has plenty of power to drive any speaker I can imagine. Movies now sound better in my home than in my local theater. CD Music sounds great, but the tuner does not sound as good pulling in radio stations. However, it could be poor reception in my area. This reciever demands good speakers and wire. I Set it up after purchase with my old speakers and it sounded very "thin" with little bass. Installed some high quality speakers and a good wire and it made a world of difference.

Strength:

Good for music, not bad for movies

Weakness:

Hissss on low volume

It is sound prety good for me, as far as I don't turn volume to 1 or 2, at this point it starts hissing.
I am still thinking do I want to wait those 2 weeks,
while Onkyo make the changes with ground loop, or I can live with it. Anyway I like how it sounds on music
and dvd as well. But it is just like, not excited as other
happy owners...
By the way would not recomend anybody buy it from same dealer as me (soundpros.com). After sending me for sure
openboxed unit for price of new one with scratched screen, they clime that they sell only new ones and they do not want me to send it back for they are expenses...

Strength:

Power, well-built, remote

Weakness:

not as many DSP modes as I'm used to, but that's ok

I based my purchase on the reviews I read here and
I was not disappointed. I didn't have the hiss or
hum problem mentioned in earlier reviews. I bought
the TX-DS777B as opposed to the TX-DS777 - which
could be an upgrade due to possible earlier problems?
I had evaluated the closest competitor receiver
(in my opinion) to this receiver - the Yamaha
RX-V995. I was put off by Yamaha's remote. I liked
Onkyo's sound vs. Yamaha's although they are close.
The only thing I miss from Yamaha is the far more
DSP modes Yamaha has than Onkyo. But,
in retrospect, perhaps it's not so bad because
I would use only a few of them anyway. I think the
Onkyo is a slightly better value than the Yamaha
for the money. Oh, and by the way,
Onkyo's THX certification is a nice touch!
