Very confusing video input selections with little in owners manual to help.

Very nice receiver that works well. No problems and sound is fantastic. It has powered Polk speakers since I bought.

Weakness:

Piece of $#!% can't controll input 4 from remote (lame) and if you want a replacemnt manuel, they want to charge you 10 bucks!

I've had this thing for a year of two, has worked ok, but now it hums like a mother, when theres no load on the input it HUMS... and this is with optical inputs, not rca, Don't Buy ONKYO, stick with HK or some other high in brand.

THX-Certification!!!!! 6.1 & 7.1 Channel Capability Great Power and Amprage

Weakness:

None so far!

This is an unbelieveable receiver for under $1000. This is THX-Certified!! It doesn't get any better than that folks. I know that they have models above this one, but this beats out my Top Of The Line Denon, I've had for almost a year. It has 6.1 and can be 7.1 adjustable. Awesome!! Highly recommend!

Strength:

Versatile, ergonomic learning remote w/ backlighting (and also easy to use) Cooling fan (when required) Assignable inputs with renaming allowed Pre-set volume upon power up Pre-set listening modes for various components Wealth of inputs at the back Still has phono input (eg. Marantz SR7000 didn't cater for phono) THX rated!

Weakness:

Digital connectivity is adequate, but Yamaha had more for comparable price

Have used this AV receiver for 2 years now. Got no regrets with it! One of the best hi-fi equipment purchased. It is a mammoth piece of equipment, but the size is there for a reason. With its hefty weight and bulk, it is packed with many features, quite a handsome piece of equipment, and delivers loads of power to speakers. It has got one of the best remotes I've seen, and when I auditioned other AV receivers two years ago, the Onkyo had that special allure to it. Other brands I checked out were Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer, Denon, Harmon Kardon, and Sony. I had an Onkyo 535 receiver prior to upgrading, and that worked very well. Naturally, when considering upgrading, I was interested to see what newer Onkyo AV amps were available. Apart from the fact that an AV amp has to do its proper job of powering your speakers, and connecting all the other components, it also has to look nice (since you'll be looking at it too). Took me a few hours to connect up properly, and to setup whilst reading the extensive manual. Trust me - spending time to understand its capabilities is worth it, if you want to maximise this AV receiver to the full. I used a SPL meter and tape rule to calibrate the surround speaker settings, and I found it was equally important to calibrate the subwoofer properly to avoid boominess which I've evidenced in other people's HT setup. I've accidentally touched the +ve with -ve speaker conections when mucking around with listening to other speakers, and the unit had a safety trip which protected the amp, so I was very impressed with its protection circuitry. In all, it is a fantastic piece of equipment, worth every bit of dollar spent!

Strength:

Good 6.1 Decode, excellent remote, well written manual. Good DSP's heavy, powerful and easy to set up. Love the ability to switch modes on the fly and two component video inputs and one output is a real nice touch. Quality product, when it works...

Weakness:

Malaysian construction is not up to Japanese standards. Buggy construction, well documented flaws that should've prompted a recall. Service was expensive but it seems to have done the job.

I've owned this piece for well over 2 years. It's the first piece of electronics I'd ever gotten off of ebay. I was a noob then and didn't realize that the unit was refurbed. Never would've bought it if I'd known. But I was trying to get HT on the cheap then and I paid the price. The unit never workd right out of the box. The volume would cut out intermittantly for periods. Finally after a year of use it died altogether. I knew I had no valid warranty anymore so I sent the unit to my local repair shop. He said that "there was more wrong than he could handle" and he shipped it to Onkyo's main US repair center. 2 months and 275 dollars later I got my receiver back. The Bass Module problem was fixed, no more dropouts and cutouts. But I did have a brief episode of the dread speaker clicks. It went away after one night so perhaps it's gone for good. Not that I have a full and functioning unit, perhaps I can properly review this machine.

Strength:

Remote control and the pure sound

Weakness:

Set up could be a little easier

I've had this receiver for 2 years now and I can say this receiver is great. I looked at sony, bose, denon and the pioneer elite's. The Onkyo had the best sound out of all of them. I'm using it with Definitive Technology's pro 100's and this receiver delievers crisp pure sound. The other great thing about this receiver is the remote. It has the best layout of all the receivers I looked at. This thing is heavy too weighing in at almost 40 lbs with nice solid construction. If your looking for a great midrange THX receiver this is the one to get.

Strength:

HT sound clarity. Every faint sound, every click is reproduced very accurately. In direct (stereo music) mode, it plays heavy vinyl excellently with a Sony PS X555ES and old neutral Advents. I cant comment on CDs too much, other than to say it performs well. I haven't had any electrical or mechanical shortcomings with this unit.

Weakness:

I cant remember how much it weighs, but as receivers go, the more the better, right? Well, you could fry an egg on the top of the 787, but I wouldn't recommend that, nor would I stack anything on top of it. Do so, and you might incur damage to a stacked unit, or the receiver from lack of ventilation. Also, it would be great if it had a A/B speaker setup. I miss not having my Advent loudspeakers plugged in. Music just isnt the same with HT speakers. However, since I've seen the 787 go for around $650 on Ebay, I cant complain on the quality I get for what they cost.

I bought this receiver when it first came out and replaced the 777, which I came close to buying. I went with the 787 because it drives 6.1, whereas the 777 only drives 5.1. There's a few flicks out there that take advantage of 6.1. Not sure about 7.1. At any rate, I have a complete Definitive Tech speaker system, with BP30 mains, CLR2000 C channel, BP6 L&R surr, an older CLR1000 for the rear, and a PF15 sub. I havent listened to any movies with 6.1 yet. Reproduction through the Definitives is awesome. I've got a large HT room setup, and being able to adjust the distances of each speaker to the audience was helpful. Most high end receivers have this, but at a price of under a grand for a THX receiver, I was pretty impressed.

Strength:

Great power, useable DSP'S, bang for the buck.

Weakness:

No on-screen volume display

The AVR-3802 is by far the most bang for the buck. This reciever makes my Klipsch come to life with plenty of bass and crystal clear highs. This reciever makes my speakers sound much warmer then my old Yamaha RX-2095 which is saying a lot since Klipsch tend to be on the bright side.(horn loaded tweeter) I have always listened to my music in stereo, DSP'S should be outlawed. I changed my mind when I set up my reciever in NEO-6 music mode. I made my music come to life,it still sounds like stereo but the reciever uses the center and backs to set up a great sound stage. I put this reciever up against more expencive one's and could not justify spending the extra money.

Weakness:

inside unit are inacessable to service and somewhat made as disposable not repairable

I'm audio repair technician for a major electronics retailer. Onkyo receivers are ok on some of the models but most of the models are very hard to service. In side unit are tighly pack and not accessable to service. Technical service litterature and support sucks. Warranty Units with new problem will stay in the shop for a long time because you can't get into unit, schematic unreadable, technical engineer don't have a clue how the products work. Sony Products and support still the very best over ONkyo and Harmond Kardon that if you concern about servicing the unit!!!

Strength:

Power. Sound. Features. Remote. Well, everything :)

Weakness:

Don't put things on it - it can get very hot.

I've bought it in December 2000. I couldn't decide between Denon and Onkyo, but guy from the shop (real audio-freak, to say so :) convinced me that Onkyo is better choice. 1 year and 7 months later, I can say that this was the best purchase I ever made. I also got Mission speakers (2 + 2 + center) which seem like they were made for Onkyo. Sound is really great (especially when watching movies). I wanted to get a subwoofer as well, but I gave up, since my current setup provides (when setup properly) more bass than I need. I've had a chance to see many different home theater setups (Denon, Yamaha, Sony AV receivers, and various speakers) in last 2 years, but I can easily say that none comes even close to Onkyo. All the features are already listed in this thread so I won't to through them, but I just want to point out that Onkyo MUST be setup properly in order to get the most out of it. When I plugged it in, first day, it sounded nice but I was kind of disappointed. However, after READING the manual and exploring all the options, I found out that one really has to setup the speakers and audio levels properly in order to get things right. So, instead of complaining how Onkyo is crap, one should sit down, read the manual and tweak the settings until things sound okay. "Defaults" simply won't work. I won't think twice next time I need to purchase AV receiver. Onkyo will be 'the one'.
