Strength:

Sound great if it worked

Weakness:

Build Quality and Quality Control of Onkyo

I purchased this receiver in Sept. 2000. I hooked it up and everything worked great until after about an hour when it shut off in the middle of watching a video. It continued overheating so I sent it off to an authorized service center for repair.

They sent it back to me over a month later and I hooked everything back up and it worked fine for a week or two using it only occassionally. Then the same problem it shuts down after being on for less than an hour. I am now sending it back to have it serviced.

Before you buy this receiver. You have been warned it would be great if it would only work.

I sell recievers for a living and I promise that this product is undefeated in its class. The closest I sell to this unit feature wise is the hk 7000 whice is NOT thx certified nor does it have component video switching, a functioning second zone, lcd remote, or the 7.1 inputs. Congrats to onkyo for created such a well endowed piece of equippment at such a meteocre price. While it is true that this unit is scarce it is also well worth the wait. Order it, even if it takes 2 weeks you won't regret it.

everyhting !

Weakness:

very heavy..

I have nothing against this receiver. I thought that Denon 2800 was the last of the AV receiver Im going to buy because Im more inclined to 2 channel stereo components. But something was just really missing with the 2800. Im using Mission 773, 77c1, 77ds and as1 speakers. I have also heard the Denon 3801, but its too expensive for my budget. The Onkyo 787 offers flexibility in controls, warm sound, midrange clarity, and just highs. Bass management is also good. My old Denon 2800 has a bass but its quite " boomy " when played with my Missions. Highs were there but not as detailed as the 787. THX is also not much important but is a plus. The ability to change setup configuration per input source is also an add-on. Remote, is also excellent. If your trying to buy an AV receiver , consider this baby. Its worth buying.

Strength:

pure power, heavy case, very simple, and afforable

Weakness:

This is the 21st century. It needs a face lift to look more modern; otherwise no problems what so ever.

The name Onkyo speaks for itself, it sounds totally difference as soon as I fire up the monster. I use to has a Sony STR-V555ES, after selling the Sony due to overheated, my friend recommend the Onkyo, at first i said to mysefl. it is very ugly, but my friend said why don't you judge it by listen to it, so i go ahead and purchase it at CC, the only reason I bought it, is that the sale man told me that i have 30 to return it if i don't like. so long story short bought it, take it home, install it, fire the monster and man, I am instantly fell in love with the power, the sound is crystal clear. The best of all, after hours of playing the unit is not even hot, you know what. I can type on and on, but there are just no words to tell you how good and afforable this can be, you just have to be like me, go out and get one for yourself. Like i said you have nothing to loose but every thing to gain, the worst case is you can return if you don't like.
What else can you get for $1000.00 that can ran 6.1 and THX with raw powers of 100 watts per chanel. My home theater is not a top notch but with the Onkyo TX-DS 787 it pull a clean sound for a lot less money, and here is my set not much but that all I can affored right now.

POLKAUDIO PSW350 (RIGHT P/SUB)
POLKAUDIO PSW350 (LEFT P/SUB)

INFINITY QPS1B (REAR CENTER CHANNEL).
And that is good enough for me.

Strength:

thx ex, 6.1, 7.1 compatible, and on and on.....

Weakness:

the speaker connectors are close together for bi-wiring(big deal you do this once and never think of it again)

please people, i have only used this thing for a week but all i can say is wow! so i will be doing a more indepth review later but for now i must say that anyone who gives this receiver a low mark are probably salesmen from store that dont sell onkyo and are tired of people walking in asking (do you sell onkyo?) haha. this thing IS THE BEST RECEIVER FOR THE MONEY BARE NONE!! ya it took me 1 week after ordering mine to get it but so what? its in demand, when your the best thats what happens! We should all be happy that onkyo is such a great company and hasn't raised the price, because most of use still would have paid more for it! well that feels better, anyways, listen to the real reviews in this forum, this is a top notch reciever at a great price and you cannot go wrong!!!
10 stars if i could!!!!

Strength:

Tons of power, 6.1 with 7.1 option

Weakness:

None yet

It came down to the Marantz SR-8000, Denon 3801, HK AVR510 and the Onkyo TX-DS787. They were all very good. The 6.1 (100w x 6)and the option to up it to 7.1 with a secondary amp won the battle. I don't know if I'll use the 7.1, but it's nice to know I can. I bought a JVC RX8000 about 6 months ago believing it was a true 100w x5. I don't think so. The 787 has so much more power. I could really tell in the rear surrounds. Much cleaner/defined sound in fronts as well. I think the price of the Marantz vs Onkyo was too high for what your going to get. The HK had a better sound than the Onkyo, but no 6.1. You would have to get the AVR 7000 (twice the price)
FYI: I found this out via ONKYO USA, if you purchase Onkyo products from someone (store or web site) that isn't an AUTHORIZED ONKYO DEALER, there is NO Onkyo warranty. NONE That store or web company may say there is an Onkyo warranty, there's not. It may be THEIR warranty. Also, per Onkyo, they do allow companys to sell "B" stock or Refubished equipment. The outside of the box will be marked Refurbished and the serial number will contain an "R" somewhere in the number.

This is a very nice product. Good power to all channels, and a nice smooth tonal balance. I really don't think many of us will need anything else for home theater or stereo. As for movies, the reciever delivers powerful bass, extended treble and a okay midrange. Many of the DSP modes are a waste of time but this is nothing new. Stick with the DSP that corresponds to the format. Five stars for this
As for music . . . OK this is not a magnum dynalab 208, or some of the seperates I have owned or auditioned at home. The "direct" sound has good imaging and dynamic range. Same with stereo. I suspect that if you are accustomed to such sound, you will not be happy with this reciever replacing those. But for many of you this is all you will need. Three stars for stereo play back
Techinacly the set up is first rate. Speaker distance level and callabration are top notch. This reciever allows for more internal tweaking than any other. Five stars for this. On some DSPs you can even boost the midrange to enhance dialog. This will prove handy for less than stellar speakers.
Nuff said.

You know by the previous reviews. This is a good piece of equipment.

I love the 787 but today I just seen the 939 for $940 shipped!. The site is called goshopping.nextcard or something like that. I will have to go back to my browser to be sure. Anyway, if I could go back in time I would rather get the 939, the retail on this monster is $1999 I believe and If you can get it for $940 shipped to your door why not rush it while they still have some left. I know this review was not for this model but I'm just so mad and happy at the same time for finding this amp at this price and wanted to share it with Onkyo fans.

Let me say I was a Sony man for all my life. When I decided to upgrade to a top of the line receiver I thought of the 555ES. I was ready to buy it...then my friend said try ONKYO. Thank god I did. The TX-DS787 kicks the crap out of the 555ES. It's a little more expensive but well worth it. If you want a receiver that looks good, sounds good, has all the bells and whistles, be the heart of your Home Theatre and will make people go "WOW", the TX-DS787 does all that and MORE.

The first thing I noticed was that this receiver feels solid. It's heavy for a reason, the POWER inside. Set up was a breeze. Speaker calibration and settings were easy. You can tweak almost everything on this receiver. One nice touch...the volume setting when the machine is turned on. If you've cranked up some AC/DC the night before at level 57 let's say, the next morning when you turn it on and listen to the radio, the volume will not be left at 57. It will be set to whatever you have selected the setting to be in the menu. LOW, or whatever the last setting was. An excellent feature for not being "blasted" and possibly damaging your speakers.

The 787 has got it all when it comes to sound formats. Dolby Digital, DTS, THX Surround EX, Pro Logic. 2ch sound is great. 5.1 sound is AMAZING. I was able to hear a difference when compared to the Sony's. The power that this receiver puts out is clean. There is no garbage with the signal. Crank the volume and it sounds better and better.

5.1 sound as I said is AMAZING. I haven't hooked up the 6 th speaker since my room can't accomodate one yet. When it can...lookout. Whether it was DD or DTS, the sound was outstanding. I heard things that I have never heard of before with the Sony's. THX is worth it.

The remote control is outstanding. It can learn the remotes for your other non ONKYO products. By programming macros into the remote you can have several machines perform various operations. For example, if I wanted to watch a DVD, I would press 2 buttons on the remote and:

1) the receiver would turn on
2) switch to DVD input
3) my Sony DVD player would turn on
4) the drawer would open
5) my Hitachi TV would turn on
6) the tv would switch to VIDEO 2

All I would have to do is put a DVD in, sit back and relax.
The remote is also backlit, a plus when you watch movies in the dark.

There is a cooling fan located in the back of the unit. I have listened to DVD's at loud levels and the fan hasn't turned on once. I put my hand on top of the receiver and it was a little warm. Overheating is not a factor with this machine.

In my opinion, the TX-DS787 is a flagship model without the hefty price tag. It is an AWESOME piece of equipment. This is my first ONKYO product....and won't be my last.

Strength:

Great features

Weakness:

Not enough people know how much better this is than other
similarily priced receivers.

One word is all you need for this receiver. FANTASTIC!!!

I've been installing hometheaters in metro Detroit for years
know and I must admit that this receiver blew away anything
that I have installed in this price range (to include several Denon 3801's). Audio and hometheater have more impact and depth. It just sounds like it has more authority, presence, and detail. I wish more people weren't so biassed towards the Yamaha and Denon products. Alot of what you pay for with them is marketing. I'd rather pay for better engineering and performance.

At Etown.com, the Onkyo 989 for instance was up for receiver of the year against the Denon 5800 and the Yamaha RX-V1, and the Onkyo won. They are also using the Onkyo 787 for there reference surround receiver for there testing, not a Denon or a Yamaha. The Onkyo is just a better product with a better price as acknowledged by etown.com's choice of equipment for their knew testing studio.

Don't miss out on this product, buy the Onkyo!
