Strength:
Power, plenty of i/o , A/V formats, ease of use, easy on screen display menus, flexible configuration...the list goes on and on!
Weakness:
Nitpicks...Cheap looking 5 way binding posts. Remote OSD navigation menu buttons. Onkyo Customer service email is non-responsive. What else can I state that has not been said about this product from previous users? It rocks! It's powerful, user friendly, lots of configurable options. |

Ugradability to accomodate future upgrades
Weakness:
Noisy fan, hum noise from center channel A bargain for what you get, unfortunately I am not using half of what I paid for. After doing the mod on the fan, it is still noisy and anoying from time to time. Concerning the center humming noise, I was told to lift the "earth" connection, that also did not work. Strength:
Lots of inputs & outputs. Nice clear sound. Great tuner (even with only using the supplied antena). Plenty of power. Not too difficult to figure out. Plenty video inputs.
Weakness:
Remote is a little difficult to navigate, and doesn't allow you to change stations on the radio (only allows you to change through preset stations). Only one optical output. Could use more optical inputs. Would be nice to have another tape input or two. There's no way to cut off the lights around the buttons, even though you can dim or cut off the display screen. The receiver is really good. I have not had any of the problems that some of the people have had, such as huming or buzing (which may be due to the fact that I use all Monster Cable M Series cables, a Monster Line Conditioner/Surge Protector, keep the phone inputs, and the pre-amp outputs pluged up, and keep the wires segregated (audio seperate from video, and those seperate from power)). Weakness:
Noisy fan Own the product for less than 2 months. Everything I can dream of. I also have 2 friends got this product (TX-DS989) on the same day. Still short of 2 speakers, but sound is much more powerfully than the DS939 which I gave it to my brother. Sound good even at low volume late at night except you can hear that noisy fan, but I can live with it. Much buy if you are shopping for a new receiver. Worth everything penny that I spent. Bar None. |

Weakness:
None I love my '989. The reason I posted this though is to plea with the company bashers to stop whasting the time of the people who are trying to read legitimate reviews. If your unit doesn't work, TAKE IT BACK. GET ANOTHER ONE. Why would you call tech support? Do you expect to fix it yourself? And dont write nasty reviews of products you DONT EVEN OWN just because you, for some reason I cannot fathom, hate Onkyo with a vengance. I once saw a nasty "this piece of crap didnt work" review for the same person who claimed to own both a TX-DS777 AND a Denon 3800. Im not asking you to love Onkyo. If you dont like the company, buy something else. But please dont whaste the intelligent people's time. Similar Products Used: Pioneer Elite, Sony ES |

There are 5 s-vedio and optical input. However, ONLY optical for DVD is working. All others are dummy!!! NO digital coax input. The surround sound is not real good I have B version (newer). I found the problem after 55 days. I contact Audio Concepts, they just replace a new one for me. They have 60days exchange policy. I would thank you for them. I got the second one since 09/2000. Now, I found out the optical input are dummy when I purchased second DVD. I connect my Pioneer Elite DV-05 to DVD input and I connect my second DVD to others and no sound when I use optical cable. I have to use RAC cable instead but the S-Vedio did support. The optical input (except DVD) just dummy. I really dispointed Onkyo that the highest AV receiver did not support digital input coax cable and optical is NOT working. Who has this unit you may try at home (who has DVD with optical output, digital coax output). I would ask ONKYO to recall all those unit and fix the problem. The jackets are physical installed and did not support optical input. There is no reason for $2,000 above unit, just install dummy jacket. Similar Products Used: Pioneer Elite VX39TX |

SOUND FROM SURROUND CHANNELS IS NOT ADEQUATE AT REFERENCE VOLUMES. I HAVE BOTH YAMAHA-RXV1200(I PAID $540 FOR IT)AND ONKYO TXDS989($1800).EVENTHOUGH I PAID THE LOWEST PRICE POSSIBLE IN U.S I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND YAMAHA RECEIVER FOR THE PRICE AND IT HAS ALL THE MODES ONKYO HAS(Eg:DTS DISCRETE ES,NEO,PROLOGIC2)EXCEPT THX,WHICH IS OBSOLUTELY USELESS MODE.
