Love this receiver! Kept up with my big Cerwin Vega speakers and put out a nice refined quality of bass that just bumps. I am of the younger crowd and like my fair share of rap music but still listen to most genres though so don't worry. I also love all the audio functions and the all the channels you can record on. Have yet to watch a movie with this beast but I am by far amazed by the system! I got it at a garage sale for $10 so I would say I got a pretty good deal, and they wanted 70 for it but I talked them down :) ha |

Strength:
It's heavy. Dials are well-made. The tuner allows direct tuning, good reception. Plenty of inputs/outputs. Neat IPM feature wakes the reciever when you send it input. Dual-zone output.
Weakness:
Horribly muddy sounding. No mode to allow 2-channel stereo through both front and rear speakers. Surround Modes don't help sound at all. Onkyo is a pretty good name and this family of recievers had recieved good reviews so I expected pretty good sound from it. I was quite disappointed. I bought it on sale at Best Buy, paired it with the Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble IV speaker set and expected some moving rumble and clear hiss. But the sound is really muddy. My $80 Altec Lansing computer speakers sound much better. I am really unimpressed. |

Strength:
Clear sound in all ranges, plenty of bass, and no overheating. It's easy to use, looks good and built to last.
Weakness:
None that I have experienced. I absolutely LOVE this unit! I couldn't believe my luck when I saw it in the second-hand shop. I've only ever had Onkyo products, but when you've got something good, stick to it. I'm mainly a music listener, and I'm currently running it with B&W 602 S3's. No Sub Woofer as yet, but I swear that you would think there was one, as the bass is just beautiful! The clarity is fanstastic. It delivers a nice, crisp, clear sound. There is no background "noise" (hiss), and it's very easy to use. Similar Products Used: Onkyo TX-810 (vintage 1988....still very good for an amp that age) |

Strength:
Good power, looks nice, sounds very nice
Weakness:
remote control buttons are getting crummy (hard to make electrical contact), DSP modes are a joke Great receiver in stereo, has good output with speakers that are efficient... Sounds great (although not as good as my friend''s TXDS676). Similar Products Used: Onkyo TX904, JVC, Realistic |

Strength:
built well
Weakness:
no bass I bought this Onkyo used for $200. I got for my dorm room because I didn't want to bring my good stuff to school. It's fine for the (used) money, but it lacks bass. It's bass response is actually almost nill. I've owned many other recievers and they all killed it in bass. The remote buttons are alittle hard to distinguish. I like the fact that you can watch a video input while listening to your cd input. Sound is fine for the money, but I've heard better sounding. If it had more bass, I'd be totally satisfied for the amount of money I spent. If you can pick one up cheap and don't mind the lack in bass, then it will be fine. It's made well and has enough functions- and the pro-logic sounds pretty good. |

Strength:
It was much improved from my prior system; it was my first surround sound system.
Weakness:
The Surround sound (DSP)ceased to function after about 4 years, I'm deciding to up-grade or repair ... The unit also had a tendency to get put into a mode where the source from the casette or CD was changed and it was not very user friendly to fingure out how to change it. (you had to read the manual). I question the quality control of this manufacture (design or manufacture). I have TV sets much older and the older Yamaha Amp I use to drive speakers on my pool area that has worked without a probem ever. The features were fine for my entry into the surround sound era, and the PA is a strong point. The remote was very complicated, but suited to some one who wanted to control EVERYTHING with the remote. Similar Products Used: First AV receiver, I used a Yamaha receiver amp previously that worked flawlessly(and still does), it replaced a Kenwood model that had the preamp fail due to component failure (it think it was screed on resistor elemets on the main board. |
