Awesome sound, far better than others in its price range. This is the only receiver you can turn all the way up without distorting the speakers if you have good quality speakers.

The volume sometimes has a mind of its own but it's no big deal, tuning takes a while when using the wheel.

If I ever need to buy another reciever I am sticking with Onkyo, their receivers are their bread and butter unlike Sony, where they make everything from T.V.'s to computers. I would recommend Onkyo to my grandmother if she wasn't deaf.

Just purchased one week ago-after hooking it up to 5.1 to my DVD using the multi channel input on the reciever,it really kicks compared to Pro-logic eventhough it also sounds great!This is my first Surround Sound Reciever and it really live up to expectations so far with it´s high output in all channels.It´s a great buy!

Many inputs for flexibility of VCRs and DVDs. Powerful amplifier that drives good clean sound. The dolby setting allows for adjustment the automatically sends a test sound to each speaker. The adjustments on the power setting per channal is excellent.

The output for the surround speakers is not strong enough to enjoy a full sound when listening to CDs. The volume control for the external room speakers must be adjusted by the remote control device.

The Onkyo is a good receiver with a clean and powerful amplifier for a mid size room. It also has many sound inputs for flexibility in configuring VCRs and DVD players. The power feature is good; two power plugs allows complete turn off of power to the whole system and it automatically turns its self off when no inputs are available. The surround sound effects have excellent adjustments that fine tune the sound for the room size and placement of the speakers. The sound test used to determine the power setting for each speaker is very handy. The receiver is tough and has survived my little toddlers. The only negative comments are output for the surround speakers are not strong enough to enjoy a full sound when listening to CDs. The remote control device must adjust the volume control for the external room speakers.

Just received and used for a month , daily. Very pleased, driving 6 speakers and full power to all of them. Dolby system is superb and seems to offer every hook-up option I can think of.

remote controller lacks some feats, a bit more bass could be produced, you can't live with this thing without buying a set of amazingly expensive speakers

i got this practically for free: i paid about $200, when the price ought to have been appx.$600, which has made my smile to last for half a year now. the rds-receiver is great and if a station isn't broadcasting rds, you can manually name its frequency. dolby digital'd be a nice addition to the amplifier but there's almost nothing more to be added. the modell is about 3 years old, but beats a bunch of today's competators. the design is nice too, the unit in a way melts in my room. by the way, i've heard tx-sv545 won a test of amplifiers under $600 in the leading hifi-magazine here in finland in 1998 and in a similar test in uk too. go get one!

I found this receiver to be 10 times better than the entry level Sony and JVC, etc... The stereo separation is great. Watching movies in Pro-Logic sounds great, I use the Lucasfilm Re-EQ all the time with movies since it sounds better but find the 3D Bass button too bassy with a sub. The volume control also suffers the same problems as the higher end Onkyo receivers. I've tried the min/max with power off which seems to cure it for a day or two. I'd recommend this receiver to anyone who is buying their first receiver vs. a Sony or JVC. It's a great deal for $399. The multi-sourcing is a nice feature too, I've installed in-wall speakers in the kitchen.

Just bought this product a couple of days ago and I like it. I found a demo unit for $300, and at that price I think it's a very good buy. I'm not sure about paying the list price for it though. I believe in this price range, Onkyo has the best sounding units. Definitely not a lot of the "fun" features, but those usually wear thin within a month or so. Not crazy about the use of the "wheel" for tuning the FM, or for scrolling through your presets, but that is easily fixed with the remote (which once again, is basic, easy to use, but not a lot of pazazz).

nice reciever, got a refurb for $210. great features, can't be beat for the price, but don't like the remote. i wish it was more universal and backlit, but thats what my all-for-one producer 8 is for. sound quality is excellent, switching from a Technics 410 to this reciever was a huge leap, but the sound functions kind of suck.Overall, good value nice starter reciever with DD ready

Ive had this Receiver for about 6-7 months now and love it! It has provisions for 5 to 1 Dolby which i use alot with my DVD Player. Audio is very good and controls are user friendly. If you can still find one of these units and are looking for a mid class Receiver....buy it! A steal for $300 or less.

Cheap remote, no build-in digital decoder, no s-video inputs

I have my 545 now for 18 months and I still love it. The problem with the volume knob was fixed from Onkyo for free. Sound quality with my 5 Energy Pro speakers and Energy powered sub ist excellent. I have a DVD-player with build in Dolby Digital decoder hooked on the multi-channel input and until now I have managed to impress every single one of my friends with this setup. :-)
Feed this amplifier with a good source and you will be rewarded. I recently had a friend´s high-end Naim CD-player connected to compare to my Panasonic CD/DVD unit and the Onkyo easily transported the quality improvement from the Naim to the speakers.
Only disadvantage is the lacking digital decoder. If you need this, go for the new Onkyo 575. If you have an external decoder or a build-in one in your DVD player, get the good old 545 for little money and be happy.
Another useful feature is the multi-room ability. You can connect another pair of stereo speakers in your kitchen and control everything with just one receiver.
