Strength:

quailty,high end sound, well built

Weakness:

the only thing i think of is this the remote should be upgraded to a universal remote like the one the, rs-600 series.

this is a well built unit I,ve looked at other units at costing up to 500.00 and this unit is one of the best for the year 2002 this sounds more high end and they sould charge at least a 100.00 dollars more for this. you can hear more enriched highs and very little distortion most recievers have only 6 indivdual discreat(mosfet amps this has double that this has 12 wich gives the reciver a push pull configuration mich means that it will sould twice as loud as than sony or yahama at the same price range this also has a front av/s-video connection wich is an improvemen over last years model and over this years yamaha model I used to be a yahama beleaver but now since i herd this one at circuit city I will never get a yamaha again. well it also has two digital inputs wich i think is nice, i lke the front face plate this reciver is pretty light but don't let the weight fool you because this is a well built unit also i does not have alot of dsp but that's good beause most persons will only use one or two of them on any reciever I don't like the remote at all I think that on the next model they come out with they should make the remote more unversal to accept any type of componets, also they should bring bakc the manual bass & treble controls other than that a great reciever at a good price.

Strength:

sound, price, ease of use

Weakness:

none

Don't be fooled by the wattage ratings(100+) of of other receivers. This thing blows them away!! I have a yamaha satellite setup w/ a 100w sub, and it will rock my large living room with dvd's or cd's. In addition, the sound is far superior than your sony, kenwood, technics, etc. Never again will I fall for the mega-feature high watt ads of lesser brands.

Strength:

provides quality audio for movie watching and music listening at a low price.

Weakness:

with my needs, none.

This is a nice, easy-to-use entry level A/V receiver that has almost all the features you need for a fulfilling home theater and audio experience. Coupled with my mission home theater set-up (m701 (front),m700(rear), 70C2(center),70ASA(sub)), my dvd movies come to life. Music listening in stereo mode is also excellent ( I have a Technics PGL4 cd player attached to it via a digital optical connector). If you are in the hunt for a good receiver that doesnt break the bank, look no further, here's one that's affordable and yet offers quality performance.

Strength:

Overall value at this price point, and sound quality.

Weakness:

Remote is a minor issue.

Can't beat the price for the features and the quality Onkyo provides in this unit. This is an excellent choice for an entry level home entertainment system with more than enough juice to shake, rattle, and roll. The TXSR600 is also an exceptional value and tuff to overlook for an additional $200. Save your money by avoiding some of the over-priced units in this category and invest them in some quality speakers.

Strength:

Great Features for the price

Weakness:

Remote

I purchased the TXSR500 and I was reall impressed with all of the features I got for my money. I have a kenwood subwoofer and BIC DV 52's. The sound came alive compared to my "out of the box" system I bought 5 years ago. The remote is worthless, but anyone can order the learning remote for the TXSR600 directly from Onkyo for a mere $33.

Strength:

Simple to manage with power

Weakness:

If you follow the manual and connect the VCR (rec) into the receiver you must have the receiver on to tape a TV show. I wish the designers would fix this problem and make this port active on stand-by mode.

Great sound, clear controls although the remote is a little cluttered. This is my second Onkyo receiver and I will never ever by anything else. The power is handled well and the controls on the unit are well laid out.

Sound -- not the best, but still pretty good Get a lot for the money

Weakness:

Remote A little confusing set up

I had this receiver for about two weeks. I have a smaller room and only a pair of older, high end JBL speakers (they're too large for the existing space -- looking to upgrade). I upgraded from a 10 year old Sony receiver and have to say that the difference was amazing. The sound quality improvement on my old speakers was significantly improved. The receiver had all the basic features for today's DVDs and felt like a quality piece of equipment. It has plenty of power for my needs. On the downside and maybe I'm just being picky, the remote was really annoying. It couldn't run my CD player and the button layout made no sense. Why put the volume control in the lower right hand corner where it is hard to reach when you first pick up the remote? I guess you could spend the $50 and buy a new universal remote designed after 1983 Since I am in the process of upgrading my system, I decided it was worth spending the extra $200 to get a little extra power, more digital decoding options and a better remote that the 600 model offers. Otherwise, the Onkyo 500 is an excellent receiver.

Strength:

1. Lots of Inputs 2. DTS, Pro-Logic 2, 5 channel stereo 3. Bang for the buck (fills my 14 X 28 room just fine)

Weakness:

Remote is lame. Small buttons, no backlight, non-learning. I am going to get a learning remote anyway. Bass is not too impressive, but I am in the market for a sub anyway.

I have never ventured out from the more common brands (Sony, Pioneer, Aiwa)of audio equipment until now. I chose Onkyo over Denon based on input from others and online reviews. My Sony receiver was 10 years old and really need to go. I am really enjoying the 500. There is a lot more clarity and depth to the sound than I was used to. It was simple to set-up (I didn''t miss the GUI at all). We are watching more movies than ever before and I can hear the dialogue for a change. Like my friend said, " Going to the theatre is a step down for you now". He was right.... Thanks, Onkyo

Strength:

Full sound, Pro Logic II for under $300!, DTS, Overall incredible quality and definately the most bang for the buck

Weakness:

remote has small buttons, boo hoo;)

When I first decided it was time to purchase a real home theater (i was using creative fps2000 computer speakers before), I had a strict budget of $525. I was looking at the HK AVR 110 and this onkyo. The two receivers were neck and neck, both the same price, both sounded amazing, but the onkyo had a little more power and pro logic II which put it over the top. PLII is great, I never thought I would find a receiver for under $400 with it let alone $300, but thanks to onkyo I did. The sound is extremely clean and full and the 80 watts are 80 TRUE watts, not like the deceptive power ratings of inferior units like sony, kenwood, etc. I would reccomend this reciever to anyone with a smaller room because it isn''t extrememly powerful. Great buy!

Strength:

-- simple to program -- low cost -- great quality sound -- Pro Logic II

Weakness:

-- if you have a large room, you may need to upgrade to the Onkyo TXSR600 because at only 75 watts, it''s not gonna blow the roof off.

I took a chance and purchased this Onkyo (my first Onkyo product). I was upgrading from an older Yamaha model. I wasn''t sure if Pro Logic II would make much difference, but I decided to buy it since the price was so low. And I''m glad I did. This receiver sounds better than I anticipated. It has a clean sound and is not as high as my old Yamaha. Since I''m only as casual listener (we listen to maybe three or four DVDs per month), I didn''t want to spend too much money on a high end receiver. I''m running the Onkyo with 140 watt Yamaha fronts, 150 watt Yamaha sub, and 120 watt Sony rears. I really enjoy the Pro Logic II. You can determine how loud each speaker will play. I also like the sound quality of regular TV (you can actually hear the leaves crackling underneath the Crocodile Hunter''s footsteps as he walks through the forest). Overall, I would recommend this receiver to anyone who has a small or medium sized room and doesn''t want to spend too much money on a receiver, but wants really great sound. For the price, you can''t go wrong.
