Strength:

Great 5.1 dolby digital performance

Weakness:

Poor performance in stereo.

This receiver is a mixed bag. On one hand, the performance in 5.1 channel D.D. is first rate. Movies have impact. However, in pure stereo, (without a sub) the mids lack detail and the bass is both bloated and lacking. THX is a selling point that only benefits Mr. Lucas, not you the consumer. Way overpriced at $1700.00. Get yourself a Denon 3300 or a Yamaha 995 both for under $800.00. They provide superior sound and lower distortion.

Strength:

Great look, excellent sound-powerful, remote...

Weakness:

No 2nd video or 3rd VCR input, heats up fast...

I had the VX-D609 for a couple of years and was able to get an awesome deal on the 29TX, so I upgraded. This thing is sweet - though not that impressive for $2300. For $850 it is an excellent upgrade as far as power and style. The remote is also excellent (though not a touch sensitive as the Sony AV-2100, which I sold w/ my old receiver) The learnig feature is simple and virtualy all set-up are done on the remote. The one problem I seem to be experiencing however, is with the s-video connections from my DVD player. Movies that display a black screen (between opening credits, studio titles, etc.)seem to lose the signal intermitantly. My player a Sony, connected with Monster cables. My TV will display "Video" as though nothing is connected to the TV. I have checked every possible connection, changed cables, tried another DVD player, and even exchanged the receiver. Any suggestions?

Strength:

nice looks, no fans, remote use

Weakness:

very cheep binding post, am/fm hook up poor, none metal front pannel, tin top cover, Runnes to hot, very cheap circuit boards, problems with dsp board.

I bought my pioneer vsx29tx from a authorized Montreal dealer. Who seem to be a nice guy untill my unit broke down,
first I couldn,t get a refund this Demo unit which I only had at home for 10 days. He flat out lyed to me about speaker loads that the amp section could take. The technician at pioneers Head service told me that speakers loads of 8 ohms and 4 ohms could not be run on this amp it would burn the Mosfet out put. The lowest load would have to be 6 ohms for the front and back channels. Which tells me Pioneer dealers do not inform their Store sales people to well, or they will say anything to make a sale. More fun and game come when i take the unit to pioneer authorized service
center, and the technician looks at my unit and tells me that the unit I,m giving him is one of many he has seen with the dsp circuit problem. Good news it will take 6 wks for a
new dsp circuit board, same problem someone else has wrote in about with his unit. The problem starts when unit get to hot and then no sound, all lights on display are working but
the proceessing chip goes down. Bad mother board and they know it. That, my friends is poor workmenship when i read that someone else is having the same problem but in the USA... As for power rating I have always been told to check the size of the amps caps & transfomer, in the VSX29TX they looked very same. I strongly doubt it is given in real RMS
power ratind. I own alot hi end electronics like Krell,
Spectral, Martin Logan Request, Tannoy D700, Mit cabling total about $70,000.00. I like good Toys like anybody else but if i had to do it again I would not buy Vsx29tx. Don,t get me wrong i own their dvd DV 09, & LDS1 Reference Laser disk player, which is built like a tank and worth keeping. But people don,t be fooled by slick Black Plastic looks.
As for the remote not very good at night just another toy to
Make you buy the vsx29tx.

I think "Jose" need his head EXAMINED. For starters, I got this A/V receiver from AVIelectronics for $1100 brand new with warranty. Unbeatable at this price. Jose, the speakers you are using do not match quite well with this receiver. When I auditioned it, the saleman had it running thru Martin Logans. Man, these speakers do no justice for this receiver. So i got the saleman to hook up some Magggies 1.6QR. Man, what a HUGE difference. This receiver KICKED AZZZ. That was last year. I bought the speakers and ordered my receiver from the above company.

A tip on evaluating a receiver's quality: Turn down the volume to say -75db. Now sit directly between the front speakers in 2 channel mode. If the sound you hear are coming from both speakers smoothly and evenly, take that receiver home with you, if not, dont waste your money.

My Setup:

Pioneer Elite 29TX
Pioneer Elite DV-07 DVD changer 301 disc
Pioneer Elite PD-F19 CD changer 301 disc
Pioneer Elite DVL-91 Laser Disc/DVD/CD player
NAD 218THX 2 channel Amp for my MAGGIES...

Bettercable speaker cable for front three channels bi-wired.

Strength:

Build Quality, Good Remote, Average two channel sound

Weakness:

Value (Could be much better at it's price level) DTS processing is very poor. Very limited in speaker and bass management configurations.

I bought this unit to match all my other Pioneer Elite Gear,
DV-09(DVD),LD-95(Laserdisc Player), Pioneer Elite 16:9 RPTV,
and the PDR-99 recorder and Martin Logan’s SL3. Unfortunately (to my disappointment)after two weeks of auditioning I took the unit back and purchased the Sony STR-DA777ES.

Please read on for my personal opinion on the VSX-29TX:

First of all Great Build although the D/A stages could have been better. **** Stars

For Stereo mode the unit has great center imaging but the details where not there. Although the sound was warm the bass was to soft for my liking. *** Stars

In Dolby Digital the unit performed above average and the soundstage was dramatic and fast. Details now developed in an enveloping soundstage. ***** Stars

In DTS this unit greatly disappointed me through all the tweaking I could muster I could not get DTS to sound as dynamic and forceful as in Dolby Digital Mode. * Star

I would rate this unit a little higher if the price was much lower. I just feel for the money there is much better out there. Value *** Stars

Strength:

Great value, sound quality and remote.

Weakness:

only handful DSP modes, running hot. discontiuned

I have tested the following pre/amp or receiver
for my study room with $1000-$1500 budget.
1. B&K PT3II & ST2430. ( $ 1250 )
2. PrimareA20 ( $ 1250 )
3. Carry AE-3/AE-25 SuperAmp.( tube pre/amp, $1800)
4. Poineer VSX-29TX ( $1150 )
5. Yamaha 2095 ( $1000 )

I just broght the VSX-29TX. It has almost everything I want:
value, sound, look, remote control. DVD. It makes my $200 Denon CD sounds that $800. I highly recommend to anyone who is looking pre/amp, receiver. Five starts for the price/performance. Only problem is it is discontinued.
(This why it is cheap )

My other equipments:
speakers: B&WCC604, CC602-S2, CC6, DM302, M&K 125THX sub.
DH T-14 biwire speaker cable
DH B1 interconect cable
Denon DCD-425 CD player.
Pioneer Elite DV-09 DVD player.

Strength:

Strong, warm sound quality. Great multi-room/source capability.

Weakness:

Reliability.

I had a 27TX for about a month, but upgraded to a 29TX through my local dealer's upgrade program. I really wanted to keep the 29TX! It sounded great and is a nice looking piece of equipment. But, I had two different problems with two different 29's and it made me a bit nervous about Pioneer's quality control. The first unit would intermittently produce no sound - I know it wasn't an input problem, because it produced no sound on ANY input, even the tuner. Turn it off and come back in an hour and it would work fine. The second unit had a flaw in the multi-room circuitry that would, also intermittently, turn on the entire unit when you pressed the "multi-room/source" button (which is not supposed to happen).

I'm not Pioneer bashing. I have the matching Elite CD changer which works great. My 29TX receiver's sounded great and were well layed out, but I sure hope my experience was a fluke.

Strength:

good build, sounds and looks beautiful,no noisy fan, great all around a/v piece of equipment.

Weakness:

none found.

previous systems used come nowhere near.I recently went back to tweeter etc. because I wanted to maybe get the denon 4800 I originally intended on getting. When I went into the soundroom to compare the two systems on a pair of klipsch rp-3 speakers,to my surprise, there was no difference in sound quality. Both systems use the same d/a conerters and amplifiers. The only difference I noticed was denon had component video inputs and an extra optical/co-ax inputs (1 each)....and a fan.Oh yeah, and no gold connectors or copper chassis. The other difference was the great discontinued sale price I got it for,$1000 less than denon. That extra grand saved(which I wanted to give denon) went toward beautiful top-o-the line monster cable accessories. Overall this unit is mean and the looks of it still takes my breath away. I did have that one problem with the volume knob getting stuck, but i think it had something to do with setting that great remote control it comes with. It only happened once. I recommend if it happens to any one else, turn off the unit and manually turn the volume all the way down so your not going against the motor keeping it turned up. Otherwise, great product.

Nice looking unit, matches other pioneer Elite units.

Weakness:

vsx29 tx works some times and others times it does't play music, but amp shows lights, and it's on.

This is for Shawn Lightfoot, he has the same problem I am having with my unit coming on but no sound being played.
My unit went in for warrenty work on the DSP board inside the unit. This repair lasted one month and it was back in again for the same problem which I'm told is a cold solder on the Dsp part on circuit board. Yes pioneer knows about this problem,if I were you I would send the VSX29 TX in for the proper service, This is a warning sign of total shut down of your machine. Other than that I have had no other news from the pioneer service repair shop to report.
