I've been waiting anxiously for people to start reviewing this product so I thought I would get the ball rolling. This receiver appears to be one I would seriously consider. Does anyone know if this model has the variable crossover frequencies like its big brother the VSX-36TX? Their website is silet on the whole variable crossover issue. I had to learn about it on this website. With THX certification, 5 & "7" channel stereo and 6.1 capability, I would imagine that the VXS-35 would be a very good candidate. As to the whole issue of variable crossover frequencies, I know of only a few products of "reasonable" price that have this capability, these include the Outlaw 1050, the Pioneer VSX-36, and some of the Sony ES line. I believe the Sherwood Newcastle pre-pro and Sony TAE9000ES pre-pro also have this feature, but they are not 6.1 compatible in their native forms. The adjustable crossover points is something that I think should be standard in this price range. Any information supplied would be much appreciated.

Bass!

I purchased this reciever under bryn mawrs' 120 day upgrade policy.I like this reciever , but it lacks punch with the subwoofer I have (BA CR400).I don't know if its me or the sub but i don't get the punch i did with my other recievers.Besides the bass issue, the reciever works well. It has plenty of usable soundfields like 5ch stereo, and 5-d theatre. The EX capability is what attracted me to this unit, but I have yet to purchase an outboard amp to drive the back channels, Overall a very good piece.

Look, easy set up

I don't know if you can call this a fair review as I don't own it but I did set it up in a friends house for him as part of a system I put in.
Set up was very easy and intuitive. The OSD walks you through all of it nicely. I like the way it sets the delays by just having you put in the speaker distances.
I don't get why some here say lack of bass. Are you not using a powered sub? Maybe you need to repositon your speakers. I hooked it up to a pair of Paradigm Ref. 20's and CC350 center channel and B&W LM1's for the surrounds (because of positioning and their cool top mounted tweeter).
The sound was very smooth and open on the 20's.Although I wonder how much of that can be attributed to how great the 20's are (stereophile's best speaker under a grand). He has to place his speakers a little to wide, in my opinion, for asthetic reasons so I couldn't really check imaging or soundstaging, but what I did hear sounded great. As usual, 5 channel music was a big hit and sounds cool. He uses the B&W 1000 for a sub and the 35's built in X-over's provide a good and smooth transition.
The only thing I really didn't like was when you want to change a setting, you have to cycle through alot of screens and it shuts off the music and everything and you have to go back and forth to get it right (even though I used an SPL meter).
I think for the money you can't really go wrong. Yeah their are other good recievers out there but, at this price point the differences in sound are negligible and you really can't beat the feature package.
