Strength:

Lots of connection options; Sound Quality; Looks

Weakness:

Setup was lengthy and confusing; remote OK but not great; need to purchase additional amp for TX mode

I purchased a Pioneer Elite 710 HD 64" TV nine months ago. I love it, but only had an old NAD receiver for sound hooked up to 2 speakers. I recently purchased the Elite 37TX and a set of HTD speakers and am very pleased with it. The sound quality is very warm and full, and sounds great for both movies and music. The only downside is that it took me a few days to get it hooked up and set up to perform properly. With so many hookup options and setup options, it can get very confusing when you have DSS, DVD, VHS, CD player, and cable TV. Take those 5 things and each one has 3 or more hookup options, then each hookup has several setup options - you can imagine how someone who has never set up a full surround sound system could get confused. But, once I had it set up properly, WOW! A little disappointed that I need an additional amp to run the TX mode, but I'll deal with it. Also don't really like the remote too much so I purchased a Philips Pronto 2000. But these are all nits, the receiver is awsome and the sound is great.

Strength:

Smooth, natural sound; good quality Burr Brown DACs; THX features; true stereo direct mode; nice remote; adjustable sub crossover freq is nice.

Weakness:

It's not cheap. The motor controlled volume really is not very precise for subtle volume changes. Could use some minor improvements in setup interface.

I bought this after first trying the Yamaha HTR-5280 (I didn't feel it performed well for music, see my review there). Overall, I've been very happy with this unit - it handles both music and HT very well (of course it does cost nearly twice as much as the Yamaha did...)

Although not cheap, it was worth it to me for the stereo music performance alone (I use the digital out from my CD player and the direct mode on the receiver - the Burr Brown DACs are very smooth). The THX modes were an added bonus, they really do sound much better than standard Dolby Digital for HT. A great receiver, still a good value when you compare to other THX ultra receivers.

My system includes: Polk, Fostex and EV speakers; Velodyne Subs; Sony CD and DVD players; Tascam DAT

Strength:

Clean Sound, 7 Channel (With Added Amp), Surround EX, Looks Very cool

Weakness:

Price

The 7 Channel Stereo setting works the best for me. I have the same problem about the receiver not detecting the THX-EX mode when set to auto and playing a EX encoded DVD, but when I set it to 'manual' EX, it sounds great. Really clear sound, JBL SUB likes the lows, Advents, Infinity Center, Bose surrounds. I obviousy liked the Pioneer line, upgrading to this. I got the M-10X amp ($300.00), to power the rear surrounds. This seems to work out great!!

Strength:

THX Surround EX, THX Ultra, and Easy Set-up

Weakness:

Need to buy a separate Amplifier for the Surround EX Speakers

Well,

Finally got that Surround EX for our Home Theater. Pretty cool when very few Movie Theaters even have it, and certainly fun when friends come over to be blown out of their socks!!!

What I Really Wanted:

The VSX-37TX is the receiver I wanted when I picked up the VSX-27TX almost 7 months ago, but it didn't exist at that time. So when the VSX-37TX was announced over on the Pioneer Web site, I was the first in my town to put an order in for it. I actually got the first one Tweeter, Etc got in stock (in my area of course), and I am very, VERY happy to have it.

Comparable Products:

If I were to compare it to another receiver, I would have to say that it performs identically in comparison to the VSX-27TX, but with the added benefit of having Surround EX, and all the DSP software to run things in 7.1 surround sound. If Surround EX doesn't interest you, and you like the features on the VSX-37TX, take a look at the VSX-27TX.

Ease of Set-up:

Set-up was easy and very straight forward. I had the benefit of having done it on the VSX-27TX before, but it was just as simple with the only extra settings being those for the Surround Back Left and Surround Back Right channels.

Price vs. Value:

For the price, you get a great receiver, THX Surround EX, and THX Ultra with it's extra boost in amplifier power. My recommendation to folks who aren't interested in Surround EX would be to pick up the VSX-27TX, but for an extra $500.00, you can get the VSX-37TX and be happy like me (i.e. about $250 for the A-35R Amp, and $250 for the receiver).

The only "drawback":

My only (and I do mean "only") issue with the VSX-37TX (and this includes the other 2000 models; VSX-39TX, and VSX-36TX), is that you do need to invest in an amplifier for the Surround EX speakers. Pioneer offers the 60Watt/Channel A-35R, which runs for about $250.00, but I'm sure you could find others. I picked up the A-35R, and it suits my needs. Just don't know if it matters that it is only 60Watts/Channel as opposed to the 120Watts/Channel of the other channels on the VSX-37TX receiver itself. It was my impression that the amplifier was included, so I was frustrated when I realized that I needed to shell out another few hundred bucks. But I'm fine with it now, and it does sound awesome. That said, it is important to be aware of this before you go out and decide to buy one of these new Pioneer ELITE Surround EX receivers.

Bottom Line:

The New VSX-37TX is Highly Recommended!!!

Weakness:

Unable to get the subwoofer to respond while listening a audio CD

I have connected this A/V receiver to Klipsch Cornwell as front speakers, Klipsch KLF-C7 as a center speaker and Heressy II as surround speakers. While the music is superb, subwoofer does not seem to respond frequently. Is it because I am already using large front and center spekers. So far I have not gotten a satisfactory response from Pioneer and Klipsch. Any suggestion I can receive from the readers will be much appreciated.
