Strength:

Great for the Money. DTS and DD5.1 and 5.1 inputs for 169.00!

Weakness:

Remote a little small. Speaker Clips, No S-Video.

I bought this thing as a sort of disposable receiver to hold me off until I could afford something better. Well, I may hold on to it for a little longer. For most of us "Casual listeners" this thing really foots the bill.

Setup was easy, I found the manual quite easy to understand so setup only took a few minutes (Still tweaking though!). The remote is a little small but it does everything you really need. I really recommend the All-in-One Cinema7 remote. Just setup with the included remote and use the all-in one for most listening (or the wife).

The lack of S-Video may be a problem for some folks but I just ran the video to the TV, the audio & digital to the receiver. By setting up macros with the Cinema7 it is a one-button push to setup any source on the tv and receiver. The unit does have DD5.1 inputs which is a surprise at this price. The clip speaker terminals are a bit of a downer but what do you expect?

With my system which consists of Kef Coda-7 Fronts,Polk RT-25 Rears,& a Sony SA-WM40 Sub. The receiver has enough power in my small 12x20 Room. Sound is clear without any major flaws. Listening to a DTS or DD 5.1 dvd is a pleasure.

Overall I really think this thing is a great value. I can't believe what you can get for a couple of hundred bucks these days! I can't really find a flaw when the price is considered in the big picture.

Strength:

DTS, Great price, high quality performance

Weakness:

terrible remote, DSP modes aren't useful

This is my first digital receiver, and the first building block for a home theater.

Great for my apartment's small living room-- plenty of power for that space. I just had a standalone TV before this, and WOW I can't believe what I've been missing. The free speakers Best Buy gave me with this purchase were just what I needed for the rear 2 channels.

If you want great sound and don't need a lot of power, this is a perfect system. Since I use a universal remote, I don't really bother with the provided remote and don't have to deal with the really small and illogical interface.

GREAT VALUE!

Strength:

DTS, Low Price, Easy to set up.

Weakness:

Small remote buttons, Small volume display.

This is a good unit, it was easy to set up, and easy to use. The instructions are easy to follow, it only took me 5 minutes before I was enjoying a DVD in all its DD splendor. My only gripes are the small remote buttons that can be difficult to hit, and the small display for the master volume control on the front of the reciever. The unit has lots of power, more than I will ever need. It also sounds great, and runs cooler than my VCR. Overall lots of bang for the buck. If you are looking for low cost a reciever with DD and DTS and don't need S-Video switching take a look at this reciver.

Strength:

Price and Features(DD and DTS)

Weakness:

Power and remote buttons are poorly organized, Also lacks multiple digital inputs

Decent performance for a low-end receiver(got it for $369CAD- $220 U.S. with a pair of remote headphones can probably go down to approximately $340 CAD before clearance at the end of the year).

Quite a few DSP modes, some of which are not particularly useful. Nice and simple LCD display and easy to set up! Has both Dobly Digital and DTS capabilities and the corresponding digital outputs.

Has fairly cheap connectors and only one set of digital outputs and one set of speaker outputs. Only 60W/channel, not really enough for a moderate to a large size room, especially using 5.1 channels. Remote design is poor and buttons are way to small.

I can't really complain due to the excellent price/performance ratio. However, it definitely lacks power. In retrospect, I would have bought the 409 ($389CAD) or even the Elite vsx21(which is double the price of the 309)

Good for small family rooms or apartments, anything larger, buy the 100W/channel systems.

Value, Sound Quality, Output, Features (DD & DTS)

Weakness:

Remote Control

I was prepared to pay substantially more for a receiver, but this under $200 gem has everything I need and more. I'm surprised that some reviewers find it to be underpowered. I'm using it with 2 Polk Audio RT600 speakers and an Acoustic Research S112PS powered sub. This setup is more than I adequate for my 18x20' family room. The Sub does make a huge difference, as it would with any receiver.

Instruction manual is great and makes setup a breeze.

Similar to other reviewers, I feel that the remote is not well designed. The keys are very small--it would be much improved if at least the major control keys were larger.

Overall, it's hard to imagine that you could find a better receiver for the money.

Strength:

None other than the value for the price...

Weakness:

Maybe.... sometimes power... but I don't regret it...

I m really glad that I purchased this master piece... It is really great for the price I paid... (I got it for $130 from bid.com) and one cannot have all the advanced features like Dolby digital and DTS decoding with this price.

Let me tell u my home theatre setup, I have infinity RS-4 as my front speakers (again great speakers) and AR's c225PS as the central channel speakers... and the performance is tremendeous. I really enjoys the surrond sound in movies as well as music...

Strength:

Price, Dolby Digital AND dts decoding, easy set-up, many sound modes

Weakness:

Only 60w/channel, not uber-attractive, clumsy, small remote

I was hestiant about buying this for my bedroom, but alas- it's great. While the power output isn't enough for huge rooms or anything, it's great for bedrooms and smaller rooms- plus the sub out let me connect my AR 120 watt sub, which rocked the house down. I have it connected to Bose 301's as my left/rights, and boy, do I get great stereo sound. The DSP modes are good, but I'm not fond of them to begin with- it's the Dolby Digital and dts I like- and they're both here! Excellent sound from DVD's like the Matrix, Blade, and Twister. A great reciever at a low price!

hmm..... =( 60 watts per channel only...doesnt matter for me...small theater room...

Very good reciever for price....Lots of Features not on more expensive models....yet a very restraining 60 watts per channel...I suggest if u have a pretty large room....go for a 100 watt per channel one at $250...
