I purchased the VSX-906S in January of 1998 (replaced a Sherwood Pro-Logic unit). The receiver is more complicated than a Pro-Logic receiver to set up properly; but so is any DD receiver. The complications are eased somewhat by the GUI and the results are worth it, especially if you use a SPL meter. I liked the learning remote and use it with my entire system (2 Sony CD units, a Toshiba VCR, Panasonic VCR, Toshiba TV, ans Sony Tape unit). The DSP sound fields are more subtle than the Sherwood, which is a plus. I get full sub-woofer output through the LFE channel in all modes; DD, DPL, and regular Stereo mode. I have been very satisfied with the performance of the unit. |

I have owned the 906 for about a year now and have been very happy with it. I have all paradigm speakers including a PS-1200. I have seen a lot of complaints about the subwoofer jack and about hooking it up through the B speaker outs. The 906 uses the sub out in all modes but stereo. If you need the sub for stereo mode I found that hooking it up through the front pre outs is a much better idea. Doing this doesn't turn the fronts off and leaves the sub on for DD. I have also found that if you are having problems with sound quality you probably don't have all the right positioning settings set right. This receiver is very complicated but has a vast number of features that are only found on much more expensive units. I have enjoyed it thoroughly. My only qualm is that the remote won't work with my cable box. It won't learn the commands. |

Strength:
THX series, individually adjustable speaker volume
Weakness:
No DTS I have had my D906S about 2 years now. I am extremely pleased with the perfomance of the baby. For the money and at the time, it was one of pioneer's best receiver yet. I got mine for around $800 back then, but you can find them for 400-500 easily. |

Strength:
Excellent Receiver This is by far the bes Dolby Digital Receiver that Pioneer has ever put out. It has everything that you would want in a receiver that features Dolby Digital, which includes a AC-3RF demodulator built in. There are very few receiver that offer that feature today. Only the receiver that are in the $2,000.00 range offer this feature. I rate this receiver five stars. |

Strength:
Amplifier power, clean looks, Dolby Digital
Weakness:
Not DTS ES I find that this receiver works great. The DD is crisp and clean. The amplifier has plenty of current for the average sized room. Similar Products Used: JVC, Technics, Yamaha, Kenwood, Marantz, Onkyo. |

Strength:
Excelent with dolby digital
Weakness:
Not upgradable I have had this receiver for over a year and have no complanits. One thing I here of is problems with no subwoofer output in stereo mode. you will have subwoofer output in stereo mode if you specify your front left/ right speakers to small. That is OK if you have small speakers but is frustrating with large speakers. |

hello,...i also bought the vsx906s...it is a good receiver to some degree...i have now for over a year....and looking to upgrade in the near future.I found that it does not give enough power for listening....u have to crank up the volume to listen...dont get me wrong i do not listen to music to get deaf...whenwatching it is fairly clear....and in dd mode quite sharp....listening to fm stations i find the reception a little weak for my taste...one thing i was not happy with..u cannot listen to music with ur sub....the only way to listen is when u use ur dsp modes.....if u want to listen to stereo 2 channel with the sub;u will have to connect the b side and then listen to stereo in both a/b together....what was pioneer thinking....overall listening is good....would i recommend it god knows....it is better to spend a little more and get what u want...if ur on a buget....buy it....the receiver is a good over performer |

I purchased a 906 in Novemeber 98 699$ it replaced a 607 pro-logic. Setup was easy although alot more involved than the pro-logic. The learning remote is very good and runs everything in the home theatre. An earlier review stated that the sub-out only functions in DD. This is INCORRECT. The only time it is not fuctional is in stereo only (2 speaker) mode. If in stereo and you activate one of the 6 dsp sound fields all 5 speakers AND the sub function. I have had no problems with the unit and I believe it is a good value. O.C. |
