Strength:

Clean Sound, good power, great remote

Weakness:

No DTS, no S-Video inputs

I picked this up on UBid myself after digging and finding a couple reviews on it. I had been using a Sansui Aux-901 integrated amp for many years and finally gave in to the Dolby Digital craze. This receiver sounds fantastic for home theater in my opinion. I don't have much to compare it to considering this is my first Dolby digital receiver, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know about how well constucted it is because I havent seen too many newer components lately but it seems good. Not as good as my old Sansui but hey for 267 who's complaining. It's just the inputs on the back that seem a wee bit chinsy. The remote is really easy to use and I set up my other components easily on it. Sounded good playing music too, which is what I am mainly interested in. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for an all around quality product at a good (great, actually) price. I give it 4 1/2 but I'll round up to 5. Me personally, I can deal without DTS and s-video inputs. My TV has plenty of input/outputs. BTW, It says on mine that it's made in Great Britain too.

I couldn't justify DTS on very limited software availability - so I got this one. I lucked out and got an early unit actually made in Newcastle, England (I'm told they are now made in Korea). I love the sound it makes from my Sony DVP-S7000 DVD player through my NHT speakers and 12-inch Velodyne sub... It rocks. Its "pre-out" feature allows me to do a 100hz high-pass crossover from my subwoofer to prevent the front speakers (NHT SuperZero Xu) to play deep bass freqs, allowing the amps to run cooler and more efficiently. Just a hint if your sub will support it and you have small front speakers.

Strength:

Price!!!!!

Weakness:

No DTS but look at the price!

I recently picked up one of these NEW at uBid for $247!! Awesome at this price with full warranty which I couldn't pass up. Don't know about the made in Korea thing but the one I got was made in the UK. I've been very happy with the sound and the remote is great. 5 stars especially considering the price I 'stole' this for.

Strength:

VERY CLEAN
IMPRESSIVE POWER
EXCELLENT BUILD

Weakness:

NO S-VIDEO

I HAVE HAD THIS RECEIVER A LITTLE LESS THAN A YEAR AND I LIKE TO SAY IT WAS MONEY WELL SPENT($700). I DON'T PROFESS TO BE AN EXPERT, BUT TO ME COMPARED TO SOME OF THE OTHERS IN SLIGHTLY HIGHER PRICE RANGES (SONY 555ES, ONKYO 777 AND PIONEER 906) IT PERFORMS JUST AS WELL.

THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE SEEN WOULD HAVE BEEN THE S-VIDEO SWITCHING. OH WELL, FOR THE MONEY IT'S STILL A FINE DEAL.

I'M GOING TO GIVE IT 41/2 STARS. IT'S GOT PLENTY OF POWER, CLEAN SOUND, AND FINE DOLBY DIGITAL PLAYBACK. I WOULD GIVE IT 5 IF HAD THE S-VIDEO INPUTS.

IF THIS IS IN YOUR PRICE RANGE GO BUY IT!

Weakness:

no s-video; never had a sherwood

i picked one up from ubid for 267 and i must say i really like it. sound is natural, playing through a pair of delta 30's. i have one question for your fellow R-925 owners...when i press my dolby digital, my front speakers and my center speaker do not play(i do not have the surrounds and subwoofers yet). is this normal b/c i do not have 'all' my speakers hooked up? or is there something i am not doing right. please help me.

Strength:

Good (heavy) build quality
Simple and easy to use design
Remote Control
Good sound

Also got this from UBID. Great value and clean sound. Meets all my needs for a small apt. I had a small budget and didn't need all the extra fancy features. Just wanted something with Digital Dolby with good sounds that costs below $300. I'm very happy with it. I don't need the s-video in or on screen display. The simpler the better. Low end features with high end sound.

THis receiver is hooked up to the Wharfedale Modus 1.6, Modus Center and Klipsch KSB2.1 speakers for surround.

Strength:

Excellent Musicality - Sound

Weakness:

No 5.1 upgrade compatibility. Lack of preamp outs.

I really liked this unit that I purchased from Ubid for 300.
That is until I discovered a screwed up DAC. Audio via the Optical input would only work with DD or Prologic, any of the other Dsp modes, or 'surround off' produced a horrible distortion in the pattern of the audio signal driving it. I returned it within a week.

To the benefit of Sherwood, the receiver sounded fantastic with music and DD. Apart from the distortion, it was one of the best sounding units I've heard.

Unfortunately, I declined to exchange it, and instead went for a denon avr 1800 for an extra $100. It has DTS & DD along with pre-amp outs for all front & centers and 5.1 input.

I rate it on the working portion, not the problem with the distortion. The lack of inputs and pre-outs removes the extra star.

Strength:

Excellent Sound; Ease of use; Warranty; Strong Build

Weakness:

None that matter

One of the lucky ones to pick this one up at U-bid. I don't know how I got it for the price I did($340), but I am not going to argue. Was looking to buy it for several hundreds more.

It seems to be everything I am looking for in a receiver right now. Setup was a cinch. It is easy to use. Excellent remote. Sound is very good for both music and movies. Plenty of power for the normal listener(I can not imagine why anyone would need more than what is here). Nice and clear sound with a good punch for bass. The is a nice allotment of inputs(Only lacking S-video, Terk switcher anyone). You can even customize your names for the inputs.

Sure the Denon 3300 may be a little better overall, but I would only buy the Denon if the two were selling for the same price. The Sherwood Newcastle R-925 still sells for up to $900 in many places, just as the Denon does, however I've yet to see the Denon anywhere in the $300 range.

Let's hope these guys at Sherwood keep rolling out this quality audio gear. It looks like the big boys have a new competitor. A big easy five stars for value and overall. Go buy one if you still can.

Strength:

Price, AC3

Weakness:

Not Upgradable to DTS, Not Multi-Room

I bought this receiver to upgrade my current Onkyo Pro-Logic
unit from Ubid for $267 + shipping. From the product description information on Ubid's website, it talks
about a Multi-Room remote control imput. From this, I made
the assumption that the reciever would have auxiliary
speaker connections for another room; WRONG!!!

Some receivers have imput terminals for an external decoder
for future upgrades to DTS or some other future format.
This unit does not have these imputs so no upgrade is possible.

For these reasons, I've decided not to keep the unit and
sell it to my brother, who doesn't care about these issues.

I'm unable to give any kind of performance information since
I didn't bother to hook it up.

The point of this review is to help anyone thinking of
purchasing this unit to be aware of what they are buying
before it arrives at their door.

Only buy this unit if the following means nothing to you:
1) Not upgradable to DTS, etc.
2) No speaker connections for Multi-Room listening
3) No S-Video connections

If you purchase this unit knowing this it is a great value
so out of respect for all of you who like this unit, I'll
give it 5-Stars for value & 3-stars for features

Strength:

Great controls once you get accustomed, Prologic and AC-3 sound great

Weakness:

A/B switch missing

This receiver has every other unit beat in price, I paid too much compared to the rest of the reviewers(350 bottom line with delivery) but I certainly got a fantastic deal, I am sure I saved 300 - 400 dollars on a comparable unit.
The sound with DVD,s and CD's is absolutely pinpoint accurate. The natural sound you get through my system is the best I have heard, it is better than CC or best buys most expensive set up at their stores.I am running an AR 12" powered sub with custom built front mid-bass units along with a custom center channnel with matching drivers to my fronts. The presence is WOW! The surrounds I ahve built in and they make a great match for the system.
The unit's only real short coming is that when I play only music my front speakers are a power hogs, their sensitivity is 87db and I find myself really cranking it up to get super loud music, but there is not any hiss, none!
The unit overall is super and I would recommend this highly.
