Strength:

Cheap ($199), DD and DTS built in, lots of outputs/inputs

Weakness:

Cheap (plastic front, chintzy switches, weak amp)

Cheap, but too good to be true. Pay the extra $100 for the Yamaha HTR-5140. Even though the Ymaha has no built in DTS, it has built in DD and the sound is infinitely better. Even though the Sherwwod lists similar power specs, do not be fooled. A side to side comparison proves the Yamaha with easily noticeable and significantly greater ability to drive a HT system, particularly where dynamics and soundstage breadth and depth are concerned.

Strength:

super clean 24-bit DAC, 6ch preouts, 6ch input, quiet (no fan), 2 digital inputs, when you enable the sleep timer it displays GOOD NIGHT

Weakness:

powered subwoofer preout not enabled in stereo listening or dolby pro-logic, which is not cool; must use the remote to put the unit in standby because the power button on the receiver switches the mains; can't run digital stereo inputs through the tape monitor; the heat coming through the top vents will roast anything on top of it; the DSP modes are poor

I'm very happy with this receiver except for the silly design weaknesses. The power output is fine for me. My Pioneer does 100Wx2 so I figured if the 65W of the Sherwood for the front channels wouldn't be loud enough, I could use the Sherwood's wonderful preouts and let the Pioneer take over the fronts. The price is the main reason I bought this receiver. If I had paid much more, I would have returned it due to it's less than perfect signal routing behaviors. But maybe most Dolby Digital receivers are similar in behavior.

Strength:

price, features, DD, DTS ready

Weakness:

for the price - none.

I live in sydney, australia where receivers (& other audio/electronic hardware) are quite expensive. I paid AUD$499 for this model which is around US$250. But I cannot complain because for this price, I now have a decent receiver. I have a rather smallish/medium size room & this unit is perfect for it. Before I bought this unit, I narrowed my choices to the following: H/K AVR100 (unfortunately, over here, they sell it as DD ready ONLY), Yamaha 396, Marantz SR580 (floor model), and the Sherwood 6090. All these receivers were prices approx AUD$499. But after having read the various comments/review on this site (and on the other websites) I went for the Sherwood instead. So far so good though. In the next couple of months I will be saving up for a new set of speakers to really see what this receiver can do.

Strength:

Clear, loud, discrete sound; Total Discrete Amplifier Stages (TDAS) for all 6 channels including the sub

Weakness:

Kind of limited to what you can hook up in the back

Totally awesome!! I bought this product about 2 months ago and it's still going strong. It sounds even better now, as does most audio equipment after 65-70 hours of use, then it did when I first got it. I guess you could ssay I broke it in. The price of this reciever($129.99) makes it even a better of a product. It only puts out 60 watts/channel but that's plenty for a 20x20 room or smaller or even a little bigger. All I can say is buy this reciever and spend the $800 you saved from another reciever and buy some really awesome speakers.

Strength:

DTS - Great Sound - Great Price

Weakness:

Remote control is not universal. Pretty mediocre documentation.

The sound is excellent. Using the same speakers has my cheap surround sound system, dobly digital movies (like the Matrix) sound great. Great value. No discernable noise. Tons of room to connect just about anything.

Strength:

Incredible sound, ease of operation, quite a few different features

Weakness:

No built in DTS, no s-video, only 3 video inputs(2 on back 1 on front)

Before I bought this reciever I had never heard of the Sherwood name. I had been looking at many other brands trying to find the right digital reciever. I was really considering to buy the Yamaha-5240($399.99) or an Onkyo or Harmon/Kardon(both around $599.99). Then one Sunday morning, while looking through the sales paper, I saw an advertisement for FRY's Electronics which read...

SHERWOOD DIGITAL RECIVER
Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoding
DTS Ready
60 watts x 5
5 Inputs(3 video/2audio)
2 Outputs
6 Pre-amp Outputs
Includes Remote
CURRENT SALES PRICE $149.99 (Reg. $349.99)

...When I saw this ad, I thought to myself, "Sherwood?? It must be a p.o.s. for that price!" So I continued looking at the other brand names that I had thought about buying, not even thinking about the Sherwood. Then it hit me, I don't exactly have $600 to spend on a Digital reciever right now, afterall, I just graduated high-school and I'm starting to plan for college. At this time that $149 price tag began looking pretty good. Even if was a p.o.s. I could buy it and start saving my money and buy a better one down the road. So, on the day the sale ended, I drove 40 miles over to the store and bought the reciever, repeatedly checking the return policy(30-day cash refund guaranteed). I returned home and immediately began setting it up. Once I finished I put The Matrix into my DVD and powered up. I have to admit, I tore my reciept and threw the box away because this one was a keeper. The sounds that it produces is unbelievable. 60 watts may not seem a lot, but with the "Discrete Amplifiers" built into every channel, 60 watts is more than enough, especially for the 15x15 room in which it powers. I had just bought a Digital reciever for $150 that is BETTER sounding than the Yamaha which costs $400. I heard a $1000 Onkyo reciever set up at Circuit City using the same Infinity Speakers that I own playing The Matrix and there wasn't a difference in the sound clarity or power. All I can say is, don't underestimate Sherwood!!!
