Strength:

Good for HT, nice price.

Weakness:

Annoying in stereo music.

I´ve bought my sherwood three years ago when my budget was very limited, I was quite happy with its perfomance while watching movies but when it started to deal with music in stereo mode I was quite disappointed....

Strength:

DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, 100W x 5, 2xOptical, 2xCoaxial inputs, Individual front, centre, real, sub vol control, DSP modes, cinema EQ, Dynamic Compression, Pre-amp outputs

Weakness:

Lousy remote, weak power(?)

Decent amp for a decent price with DTS and Dolby Digital decoder. Although this amp claims to drive 100W x 5 channels, I had to turn the volume to the range of 50 - 55 (max 65)to get decent volume. Only supports 3 x DSP modes (Theatre, Hall 1 & 2). Should include more effects such as Church, Disco etc. Remote control also leaves a lot to be desired. You will find that half of the buttons are useless unless you connect other Sherwood products to the 8090R.
Sound quality wise, good clarity and clear separation from individual channels. You should also be able to tell some differences between optical and coaxial connection. (Centre channel sounds slightly 'louder' using optical)

Overall verdict : No major complaints especially for a decent price.

Strength:

Power, options, DTS and Dolby Digital.

Weakness:

Remote is basic. Nothing fancy like the Kenwood 2080.

The receiver is very cool. I don't know what the complaints are about the power. I had mine around 50 and could hear 5 floors down and a block away. It can easily outdo other receivers that are twice as expensive. There are many options. Nice thing about it is that they have heavy duty binding terminals and preouts for all channels. The remote is kind of basic. Would like a little more pizazz withit, but it does what it needs to do. Here's my setup...

Sony single cd-player w/digital out
Pioneer 100 disc changer
Wharefedale SP-85 fronts
Cerwin Vega center
JBL ARC Cinema 8 subwoofer
Klipsch Quintet 2.0 rear speakers.

Everything is on Monster Cable. Everything sounds beautiful. I highly recommend this receiver. You can get them cheap off of uBid.

Strength:

SOunds great, has all the right features

Weakness:

Volume control is a little strange, doesn't really get going until the 20 of 75 inits (but no biggie). The remote is kinda minimal but does what you need it to.

I bought mine on Ebay for $190. It was a customer return from a internet home audio store. At 100WPC (.07 distortion) it rocks my AR 302T's very well. Dolby digital sounds awesome. It seems to be well built and has seperate drivers for each channel. Even if I paid twice as much I would still think I got my moneys worth.

Strength:

100W x 5, Dolby Digital and DTS

Weakness:

Moderately high THD

Bought this off of UBid for $187. I was looking for a DD and DTS receiver with a decent amount of power for a good price and this one fit the bill.

The unit sounds good in DD. I used the Dolby Labs The World is Listening demo disc and it sounded perfect.

When listening to a CD I did notice some hiss when cranked up >65. However, I'm not sure if this was the source or the amp.

Overall I found the unit to be very good and for the price an incredible bargain.

Strength:

Cheap, and decent sound for the price.

Weakness:

Lousy tuner, stereo sound that is not great.

I bought this to use only as home theater, not stereo, for $187 on ubid. While the overall value is good, I was suprised at how bad the FM tuner is. Also, on my unit the DD and DTS lights don't come on as they are supposed to. Don't buy this unit for use as a great all-around receiver, but buy it only as a adequate home theater system.

Strength:

Solid all-around performer. Good where it counts (sound quality). Good value for the money.

Weakness:

Limited in surround modes and options, especially in Dolby Digital and DTS. Must have a sub.

So far so good.. this receiver has everything you need for quality sound at a low price (yes.. $500 is low in Israel).
It plays great stereo sound, as well as DTS and Dolby Digital. Many inputs and outputs to suit almost any system.
Not too many options to play with but sound quality is excellent. The only main problem is that in DTS and Dolby Digital there is no way to have a decent listening without a sub. I have a pair of old Wharfedale 312 speakers (200W, 12" woofers) and there was no way to configure the receiver to deliver the subwoofer channel to them. I had to add a sub although the speakers could handle the low frequencies very well if only given the chance.
Generally, I am very pleased with its performance. A good buy.

Strength:

DTS, Dolby Digital, Good for Home Theater

Weakness:

DSP Modes, Remote, No S-Video

Picked this unit up for $172 on Ubid, and another $25 to ship it. The unit is great for home theater use, especially with digital sources like DVD, Laserdisc or Digital Cable. The DSP modes seem to be useless, and the remote leaves a little to be desired. I like the future upgrade for Dolby 6.1, and the overall features of this receiver cannot be matched by any other competitor for the price. Bought the Newcastle 925 six months ago, and I can't say enough about the construction of both units. The Sherwood case and construction far exceed my Pioneer 608. Both Sherwood's purchased from UBid, and both have performed well.

Strength:

This was an awesome receiver for the money. 105x5 for around $200.00 is hard to do!!! 5.1 channel inputs for future expansion. Front A/V jacks!!

Weakness:

I ran out of digital inputs on the receiver. (I need 5 but the receiver only has four, which is still a high number of inputs) This receiver doesn't have S-video or component video switching. A + B front speaker outputs would have been nice to have. The remote is geared toward to many other Sherwood products. I feel it should have focused more on the receiver. Universal remote would have been nice.

This is an awesome receiver for someone that is just starting out in home theater. Also good for budget oriented people. Dispite all of the weekness that I stated I still like the receiver very much. (How much can you ask for out of a receiver that costs on $200.00)

First of all, this is my first review.

With that out of the way, after reading countless reviews that seem to let the fact that most who have bought this receiver have let the incredible price point cloud there judgment as to the quality of the sound, i thought id weigh in with my two cents. At under $200, this receiver has no comparison, but to believe it sounds as good as say, a Harmon Kardon model, or more expensive separates, is stretching things a bit. Although in dolby digital the receiver sounds fine (though lacking a bit of bass minus a subwoofer), in two-channel stereo is where the true weaknesses come through. After first getting everything set up, i immediately felt the sound was narrow and lacking depth. i thought this was my imagination, but after a few familiar recordings, i could no longer accept the average sound. Therefore, i turned to my Elite pioneer amp instead. instantly, bigger, better sound. Notice i didn't say louder, but bigger. more depth. Some have suggested the weak sound to be the pre-amps turned down too low. i can attest that although louder may sound a bit better, it is the amp that is weak. to anyone who owns one of these, i suggest plugging in an external amp and judging for themselves.
Pair this puppy with an external amp, and youve got an unbeatable deal.
