Strength:

100Wx5, Digital Inputs, DD, DTS, Stereo, DSP, Individual Channel Level Testing/Adjust, Delay Time Adjust, Subwoofer Level Adjust. Various Speakers System Setup Mode

Weakness:

none, hope it will last long.

I got this one also from ubid at $178 plus $25 of shipping.
It is a great product to a new Home Threater owner like me. I use it with the Cambridge Soundworks III HT speakers which I got from eBay for $190. All work together very well. The only thing lacking is my subwoofer is a passive one, so not impressive enough for DVD movies. But recently I found out that it works much better with the Bass tune up in the Stereo mode for FM radio. Now, I am looking for a decent low buget Powered Sub to beef up the whole system. Because of this, I find the Speaker Mode setting is quite useful for various speaker system to be hooked up with this receiver. It is very easy to change it when I get my new powered subwoofer. Also I like the channel testing function that I can adjust the level for each channel with audiable sound during testing.

Strength:

6 channel direct inputs and pre-outs; 100W per channel; 4 digital inputs; DD & DTS decoder; 5 way binding posts for connecting speakers; decent home theater for cheap!!!

Weakness:

No official support for 6/4 ohm speakers, although that's what I used. No sound until volume reaches 15-20% of max.

This $200 receiver performs as well or better than many receivers costing 3 times as much. A BEST BUY in upgradable low end HT receivers.

Strength:

cheap, set up nice. Also the six channel direct is cool

Weakness:

remote setup. limitations on surround sound modes

I bought this receiver about a year ago. I got a decent deal at the time ($300). I actually have my old Sherwood 5090R hooked up to the pre-out on the 8090R, using the six channel direct option on the 5090R. I have decent speakers: Polk, and JBL, with an awesome sub (Velodyne ct120). I had a JBL 15 but it has to leave now, not enough lows. My "10.1" surround sound is very loud and clear, when you have 10 decent speakers hooked up just right the whole movie experience comes alive. Forget the movie theater! yah right, I will never have a screen that big. Well the receiver seems to do its job, or should I say receivers. I have 800 watts going to all my speakers which makes for great sound and high electricity bills. To end I really think that Sherwood makes great products, but I still want a Krell amp and receiver, but that will have to wait.

Strength:

Excellent value for the money, great DTS 5.1 sound, all the jacks/hook-ups you could ever want, I'd think, nice styling too (out of the ordinary)

Weakness:

Not really any for this price, except like others have said, the remote would be nice if it was a universal unit, and the individual volume settings (by mode) can be rather confusing at first.

I got this unit for only $172 at Ubid. However, the shipping was over $30 (exhorbitant!), but even at $210, on my doorstep, it is very good value for the money.
I feel the unit is very nice looking (clean design). Theh workmanship seems very good, and the unit is heavy...not some little light, flimsy unit. There's got to be good stuff inside, like the huge heatsinks you can see by peering into the breather holes. That's a good sign...
Anyway, upon hooking the unit up, I was pleasantly surprised. It has good power (if you first figure out how to effectively set the volume levels high enough--independent levels according to source--very weird). Once that's figured out, you can set the levels going to individual speakers, as well as the sub-woofer (it's got a sub-out).
I've got it hooked to a pair of B.I.C. DV62si speakers (l & r fronts), a B.I.C. DV32CLR for the center channel, and a pair of B.I.C. DV32s for the rear surrounds. I've finished it off with an 8" B.I.C. sub--the V-8. Let me tell you, I put in Saving Private Ryan and was simply blown away by how good the Sherwood handled the DTS 5.1 sound, as well as how nice all my B.I.C. speakers sounded (recommend the brand to anyone). Simply outstanding surround sound. I have never experienced the so-called 'pop' in the sub-woofer that others on here have experienced when playing DVDs (something about the switch to DTS or something when a movie begins, as well as possible between 'chapters'). The sub-out works great, and I've been able to fine-tune my sub and get awesome clean bass. For home theatre, this thing rocks!
On the other hand I was a bit disappointed when I began to listen to music with this unit out-of-the-box. It sounded decent, yet something seemed to be lacking. It turns out that my speakers were probably the reason for this. I won't get into it here, but if you do a search on this site for
BIC DV62si you will find my explanation. That said, I am currently extremely satisfied with my Sherwood receiver. It's simply fabulous (but don't expect the owner's manual to enlighten you too much........try to figure out on your own by experimenting and fiddling with things, sooner or later you'll figure it all out). And now my BIC DV62si's are amazing too, and the volume levels and accuracy of sound playing music with this thing are top-notch.
All in all, this is a damn good home theatre receiver. I think it simply blows away ANY competing product at this price, and probably many at twice the price, no problem.
Get this one on Ubid, but try not to bid any more than say, $150-175.....you'll surely be successful and obtain one of the best values out there.

Home Theatre Features; DTS, AC-3, and Speaker Type Selector. Value (Paid $172 + $30 S/H @ Ubid)

Weakness:

Remote. FM Tuner.

It was time for me to finally upgrade my whole system, and I thought I would try a home theatre receiver. If you're main use for a receiver is home theatre, then this is a GREAT DEAL. I would not get this unit for dedicated Stereo, and music. It's FM tuner is weak, and it's lacking something in stereo mode..., I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe the high THD in Stereo Mode?

When I move around the room, I can create static on the FM tuner depending where I stand..., not good.

I love the home theate features of the system. 2-digital inputs, and two coax digital inputs. Great for DVD, and DSS combinations. I'm lacking one set on A/V inputs, but I knew that when I purchased it. It has three A/V inputs; one for VCR1, VCR2, and DVD. I have a VCR, DSS, and gaming system. I'm not too worried about this, because when I get the PS2 it'll combine my game system and DVD.

The Remote needs much improvement. 1/3 of the remote is dedicated to the Sherwood Tape Deck which I doubt anybody would purchase.

Overall: I was impressed with the Sherwood line, especially considering it was not a Newcastle product. Great Home Theatre Unit, poor FM tuner, and poor remote.

My setup:
Receiver: Sherwood RVD8090
FS: Klipsch KSB1.1
RS: Klipsch KSB1.1
CS: Klipsch KSC-C1
SW: AudioSource SW-15

Strength:

Great price and sound quality. 6-channel inputs. DD/DTS decoding. 2 coax/2 toslink inputs. 6-channel pre-amp out.

Weakness:

Mediocre display. Weird video artifacting. No inputs specifically for DBS or MD (unlike similar models). Popping sound when changing surround modes.

I bought this receiver to replace the JVC indicated above which I had used for a couple of weeks but which had very poor sound through the center channel. Based on reviews here, I got the Sherwood 8090.

Basically, if I could have gotten the Sherwood's sound quality out of the JVC, I would have kept the JVC as it seems more "modern" with inputs for DBS and MD. Also, the JVC had a much better and informative display panel - one of the best I had seen for the price.

Others have mentioned the popping noise when switching surround modes. It happens on mine about 1/3 of the time during the switch. Unfortunately, it can happen when just skipping chapters on a DVD. When the DVD player is between chapters, the DD signal is lost, then when the new chapter begins, I can get a pop as the DD signal is regained. Sherwood should have resolved before selling it.

On thing I've not seen mentioned is that when hooking video up to this receiver, I can get tearing at the top and bottom of the image during bright scenes. I ended up hooking up only the audio to the receiver and running the video directly to the TV which solved the problem. I don't know if it's a defect in my unit or not, but since there is a decent way around it, I don't really care.

On the positive side, the Sherwood is much more future-proof than the JVC since it has the 6-channel inputs and a total of 4 digital inputs (the JVC had no 6-channel input and only 2 digital inputs). More importantly, the Sherwood sounds great! It has plenty of power and my CD's have never sounded this good. Also, in DD and DTS mode, I can shake the house (which my wife hates!) I'm far from an audiophile but if you're looking for a low-cost receiver that has lots of features and sounds great, check this one out. I picked it up new on uBid for $167 ($187 less $20 new winner rebate) which is an incredible price for a receiver with this feature-set.

Strength:

Warm sound

Weakness:

Can't switch center channel on and off with the remote in Pro Logic

I've enjoyed this receiver from Sherwood from the moment I hooked it up. It has a non-fatiguing, warm but engaging sound for movies and music and it's very easy to set up and use. It retains surround settings and volume for each input although I often like to change from movie (center on) to music (center off) while keeping the rear channels on. This cannot be done via remote so ya have to go up off the couch and go to the unit to do this. No big woof.

It has 5.1 channel inputs as well as pre-amp outputs which let me use my Adcom GFA-555 to power less efficient speakers but the 2 way Design Acoustics bookshelfs I'm using now and other speakers I've tried with it sound fine with the on-board front channel amps.

Like the Sherwood RVD6095 which I also own, it is also a high-value piece. As time goes by more features and better sounding amplification are making there way into the lower-price stuff, and unless you have really hard-to-drive speakers these recievers will get you onto the digital hi-fi highway with no problem. Ubid's still got the Sherwood 8090's for under 200 kwatloos average. Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy.

the remote can be tiresome however at 250 english pounds it

I first got this amp when I took my sherwood 6095rds back as I wasnt happy with the dd side of things so when I rigged up the 8090 I was in for a treat all dsp modes bring any decent film to life whilst the dd is totally awesome for the price, ok it may not quite as sharp as the denon on musicality but for bangs per buck this amp takes some beating .
at the moment I am running sherwood 8090,samsung 709,technics slpg 390, kef coda 8fronts,gale centre 10 and wharfedale diamond7.1 at the rear with cabletalk 3.1 cabling

Strength:

Price! Clarity compare to recievers at the same price

Weakness:

The looks, the remote and the function controls.

This is a great receiver for the price. There is no need to repeat its features! I compared it head to head with 525 and 3090 at my home for a couple weeks. The sounding difference between the 8090 and 525 is slight but noticeable. The 8090 needs some help in the bass and it isn't as clear as 525 or 3090. There is a dramatic drop in clarity when switched into the 5 channel modes from the stereo mode. Therefore, I can conclude that the manuel didn't make an mistake. It is believable that the THD is 0.2% at stereo mode and 0.8% at 5 channel mode. It really doesn't make sense that Sherwood will advertise it less than it is capable of. Oh, when looking at THD, becareful of how it rated. Normally, it should be rated at 100W at 8Ohms into each channel with 20-20khz range. So don't let other company to fool you by comparing apple to orange.

Other weakness including the lower than expected loudness comming from 100W receiver. At higher volume, distortion can be noticed. However, for a small living room, there is a plenty of juice in it! The last but not the least, the look, the control and remote are less than appealing and straight forward. With these reasons, maybe that is why these aren't selling at a higher price. But don't let them stop you from buying it if your primary concerns are sound quality, functions and price... because there is no competitions!

Strength:

Good sound, affordable.

Weakness:

no s-video connection

Very smart internal circuit design.
The very fact that most AV speakers don't support less than
50Hz is the key idea.
Channel bandwidth is 40 - 20K Hz but since most speakers being used with this unit doesn't have bandwidth larger than the receiver covers missing lower 20 - 40 Hz.
It will be expensive to support these and have an awesome sound quality.

Good design and good sound..
