Strength:

seemingly unlimited inputs in rear, also sound is incredible

Weakness:

the remote sucks batteries like their candy(unbeleivable!!!)

just the power of this baby is awesome.with the built in e.q. you could adjust for days to just the right sound for you.clarity on movies as well as music is the best Ive heard. The only drawback ive found is the remote & the way it eats batteries.i mean you have to keep a constant supply(4 batteries every 2 weeks on average).Even that cannot stop me from giving this baby 5 stars.like i said the power as well as clarity is superb!!highly recommend

I got this one from www.Oade.Com Jim@Oade.Com, and I like it very much. I only give 4 stars out of five because I did not compare every competitor and I assume that there is something better somewhere that I have not heard. This is the best I have heard and the rest of my components are Sony and I found a good price and so I took the plunge. And what a wonderful plunge it has been. I am going into early retirement and expect this system to satisfy me as long as my hearing holds out. FYI, I matched this receiever with the Sony DVP-S7700 and Atlantic Technology System 250.1 speakers, DH Labs cables and interconnects, and Panamax 1000 Power Center. I am a happy camper.

I bought this Sony receiver in january. At first I was very impressed of the clean and dynamic sound, compared to my old H/K AVR11. Buying this really proved to me that amplifier DOES count a lot in sound quality, I couldn't have imagined that I would get such a good sound from my "cheap" speakers. After a while it started to sound maybe a bit too bright, but still very good. Too bad I had to send it to service because it had a serious balance problem on low levels and a bit of in the high levels too. Can't stand that a Sony ES series amplifier/receiver has a balance problem that is worse than in many cheaper amplifiers! I hope I get it fixed, because otherwise it is just the one I want, all the connections included.

This is my second review on 50ES. It is great, great, great..! I got one of the early ones with the bad remote. First try Sony then go to place you purchased it from. It is has nothing to do with Receiver, but remote only asthe Sony 9000ES had same remote and same problem. My neighbor got new remote and
it is 300% better, brighter. No word on batteries yet, but the word is that this is also better.

I also have Sony's 2000 remote, that works great, very bright, macro learning, etc.

But everyone remember, there is NO, NO, NO, perfect remote for all systems. You will always need the remote that ships with any audio unit to perform unique functions to that unit. Universal remotes only address the most common functions, not all functions.

Add this to the fact that you can pick this up from Uncles Stereo in New York for $ 650+ shipping and you have one heck of a deal.

I picked this receiver up a few weeks ago and I am totally impressed by it! I have the Sony DVP-S500D DVD player hooked up to it with coax cable and I'm using a Sony 61V75 TV. The remote is cool looking but I am getting real annoyed with something it does. Let me know if anyone has experienced/solved this problem. Using the 50ES remote, I select DVD and automatically my TV's video input is set to VIDEO1 when I need it in VIDEO4 (using component). No matter what the initial TV video is set to, clicking DVD on the remote selects VIDEO1. Anyone else have this problem or am I smoking something? In regards to previous posts about prices.. I picked this one up out of box for $779 and I thought I got a good deal. I guess I should have called the mail orders places (alas.. i had to have it that day). It was pretty hard to find it in the stores even at $999. Anyways I give it a 4 because I am not qualified to rate anything higher..

I've had a string of bad luck with new out-of-the-box sony products lately so I will be factual as not to taint my comments. My system must be returned due to a receiver problem. The receiver will not communicate with the remote so I can't download any info to the remote.
The remote is braindead when it comes to controlling cable boxes. This fancy looking remote only knows about Panasonic and Zenith set top boxes! I also could not get it to work with my JVC CD player. I'd strongly recommend that anyone interested in the 50ES remove the remote from their decision factor. Instead buy a good universal like the SL-9000.

I'm now strongly considering swapping for a Yamaha 995 when it becomes available. From what I've read since my problems started the capability of supporting future formats via the 6-channel input is very desirable.

Looking at the reviews, there's no doubt this Sony ES is a very good product for the money! I'm still in doubt what receiver to buy at this price-range, but the only thing stopping me is the remote control. I read the review by 'antman' about a new mkII remote which should be brighter. Has anyone some info for me on this? Thnx!

Mark: Sony Switzerland told me inofficially that indeed there would be a remote mk II. Strange is: they not only have to change the remote but also the receiver itself. It seems it is sucking the power out of the remote.......
Anyway, product is great value.

I went on a hunt recently for my first home-theatre system with a budget of US$5000. Went to my fave dealer to audition AV Receivers. He had the DA50ES + Yamaha RX-V995 + RX-V2095 hooked up to a switcher & a pair of KEF Q55 speakers.
I listened to the DA50ES first. The sound was lush & finely detailed but when I heard the Yamaha 995 next, the difference in clarity & separation was even more remarkable in the 995! The Sony machine is well-featured & more powerful but at that price, I'd go for the Yamaha. In the end, Yamaha RX-V2095's champagne gold finish + its proprietary 7 channel effects won me over. Who cares about 32 bit vs 20 bit DAC & all the audio-jargonistic B*S*? Who cares if Sony has a movie studio? In fact, Sony's foray into Hollywood is one of its major biz. screw-ups! Anyway, those are not relevant. Trust your ears (I trust mine). If I listen to both receivers with my eyes close, I'd still pick the Yamaha.

I'm NOT saying that the DA50ES is crap. It's good but at the retail price, I'll give it 3 stars for Value. Performance? 4. Facilities? 5.
Overall - 4

Strength:

Qality, solidness, style, surround mode heaven, power, hook ups, remote, price.

Weakness:

Possibly that the remote has not all the functions for my DVD that I wish for.

Have had it for almost a year now. In the beginning I used it most for HT, but after this time I´ve beginned to like more and more what it does to music.
Once you´ve learned ( mastered ) the EQ and the very crusial settings for the speakers, this reciever is IT.

It plays exactly what you feed it and do with it. If it plays bad - youre the one to blame. Poor EQ settings, speaker setup, crappy speakers etc.

I had the same settings for six months, until I heard the
McClaren speakers. Played really well. Whent home to my own, and found that It sounded awful. Redid the settings and now it plays like a GOD. Again - the EQ and speaker settings ARE EVERYTHING.

The power and quality of it ( the EUROPEAN - model that is )
is amazing! It just pounds my NHT 3.3´s all over. It´s beautiful. Airy middle, perfect treble, well defined BASS.
It plays really deep. It fills the room and heart with joy!

Pity that the US model is crappy - but you guys are lucky - you should listen to the Jap. Model, yikes!

The remote is as any. You´ve got to learn how to handle it.
Have the same batteries, light is good, even see good in bright light. Can agree that the power-everything-off-switch is very misplaced. But all in all it commands all I´ve programmed it with.

This can make almost any speaker sing pure. Never gone over the 12o´clock notch. Even near it I have no Air to breathe in the room. I can praise this speaker not enough. At the price you pay it does outperform many recievers 3-4 times the price. Good work SONY!
