Hi. Im going to give my 50es 5 stars because I am totally happy with it, and all my demos it blew away the competition. However I am haaving trouble getting it to lock into dts. When I play the Eagles dvd it jumps in and out of dts. I am waiting for my new monster m1000d digital coax cable to arrive. So I am wondering if it is just my crappy cable I am temporarily using. I have not had this problem with dolby digital however.

i just got my 50es a few days ago. first of all i love the remote. it works fine. but besides that this receiver is the best out there for the money. i demoed them all and in my opinion weather you pay 700 or retail its a great product. like yamaha it has a million sound fields. for music i leave it in auto decode which plays the music like it was recorded. for movies i again either use auto decode, cinema, or the virtual rear. the virtual rear is actually pretty neat. it makes it appear like you have rears lined up along your side wall like a real theater. also im not so sure i would buy at uncles stereo even though i see everyone say they have such great prices. they are not authorized and for warranty has to be sent back to them-that sucks in my opinion as who wants to wait to get it back from them and do they have people trained to fix products from every company they sell?. If mail ordering I would go with JandR-they are authorized and very reputable(no i dont work for them or have any connection to them) and warranty can be done at the regular sony places.
anyway in my opinion this is the number 1 receiver on the market including the expensive denons, b&k, etc. no receiver sounds as good as seperates so if your going to pay denon 5700 money go get yourself some seperates.

I checked with Sony and found that STR-DA50ES puts out 120Wx5 @ 8ohms. and 100Wx5 @ 4ohms.(US and Canada). The new remote has already started showing up at retailers the box will be mark with something like "New Improved Remote Control", the remote itself will have a "E" on the end of the model #, I was informed by the sony rep. that if you have the older remote you can take it to a sony asp. and have the remote updated.
Sony can be reached @1-800-222-SONY

I must admit that after all of the reported problems with the remote I had reservations about the 50-ES. I went ahead and ordered it anyway in early January and it just came in on March 15th. The reason for the delay as I have understood is to improve the remote, which is now very easy to read and use(still quite a bit bigger than a traditional remote though) and to increase the power output from 100 Watts X 5 to 120 Watts X 5 at 8ohms.

There is a fairly well written instruction manual for the receiver as well as the remote. Be warned though, this machine has more settings, sound fields and options than most other receivers on the market and will take some time to get used to.

I look forward to listening to many years of pure music perfection with this receiver at rate it a strong 5! It has everything I need today as well as room for growth in the years to come.

P.S. - For those of you that say there is not a new remote yet, I have to say that you are wrong, because I have one !!

After hearing the DA50ES at a local audio/video store I was Impressed. I purchased one in early Oct 98. After 2 weeks the remotes alkaline batteries went dead and the lithium backup failed to store codes. Also the backup light was very dim. I contacted the retailer and they had yet to experience any such problems. I took the remote to the local Sony service center were they ultimatly replaced it with a new remote on 11/20/98. Again the same problems began to occur. I basically have been using this processor with out the remote to control my A/V center. Basically I have been getting the (stroke me) stories and the same old song and dance from countless Sony Home Audio reps. Stories such as new remotes are being manufactered to replace defective units, replacement kits, on and on... I even have a couple of doc# filed with Sony. Finally after a rep last week told me she would call and never did, I became furios. So 0n 3/24/99 I called Sony to speak with a rep, and basically got some help, but still felt like I was getting no where. So I asked here to please have a supervisor call me, which I have requested before and never got a response.Towards the end of the day, a supervisor from Sony called me to hear my concerns. I was told that a fix kit is now available at the Sony service centers. I picked up the remote and took it in yesterday. I really hope these specific problems with the RMTP-501 will be fixed. I just cant believe it would take almost 6 months for this to be resolved. You would think they would bench test these products. Who knows if this fix kit will work ???????
