Strength:

Sheer power,features,Clarity

Weakness:

No on screen programming

I listened to just about everything out there (see above list). I just kept coming back to this product! I had my final choice narrowed down to three: the Sony 777 the Denon 3300 and the Yamaha RXV-995. All three are great products that I would be proud to have in my living room.....

The Sony just seemed to stand out in the end. The sound is exceptional, the power is tremendous, and the look of it screams high dollar. You can tweak every varible of your "sound experience" from this unit, and wait till you hear the digital sound this unit puts out. The five year warranty and the quality of the components that go into the piece (gold rca plugs, parallel amp, UL certified 4ohm capability, huge capacitors, power supply, and heat sinks) are just icing on the cake. This thing has a ton of inputs and outputs, and is ready for future upgrades.

I thought I would hate the remote, it seems to be more of a geek option than a usable remote, but it is really alright! (Just don't drop it, the touch screen is glass). You can do anything from the remote.

I have owned several high end products from Sony, and this is by far the most quality piece I have ever seen from them. It is a cross between their high-end separates (the TA-N9000ES and TA-E9000ES, but at a substantial savings.

Last advice for all you small muscled audiophiles out there, have a freind help you lift this monster into your cabinet. At 54 pounds this sucker about killed the UPS guy who dropped it off.

Strength:

Build quality, great sound, 5 yr ES warranty

Weakness:

None so far

In addition to Matt's very accurate observations in his review, I can only say
what a surprise this is from Sony!!--The
sound of the STR-DA777ES is very open, warm and natural with excellent soundstaging--I listened to SACD on this baby and the result was breathtaking--

I compared Pio's Elite VSX-29TX side by side, and to my eyes and ears, the Sony won
hands down, and the Elite is so much more money, $2,300 list vs. $1,500 list, so even 'at list' the VALUE is on the Sony, especially with the 5 yr warranty vs. the flimsy 2 yr on the Elite--

The STR-DA777ES has been selling on-line at Uncle Stereo and Oade Bros. for about $1,029 (give or take) plus shipping--See what I mean by VALUE?--On THX licesnsed products, you pay dearly for the
endorsement, i.e.,the Elite and others--

All in all, if you've got about $1,100-
$1,200 budgeted for a receiver, seriously
consider and listen to the STR-DA777ES,
you can't help but be impressed--

Strength:

Sound quality, #of inputs, DTS and 5.1, Quality of build components

Weakness:

Remote Time on too short.Lack of being able to put programmable functions on user screens.

This thing is a torker! I'm with most of the others that gave it a good review. Sony could have done a little better on the remote control to include preprogrammed modes for us 4DTV users, and an on screen GUI would have been nice but the sound quality makes up for its few shortfalls. The bass control of this unit for subwoofers is simply the best that I have witnessed. 5.1 and DTS work extremly well. I really enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone that cares for the details of superb sound quality. I'm giving it an overall rating of 4 stars because of the remote weaknesses described above, but other that it's a five all the way!

Strength:

Good power. Lots of inputs. Cool look.

Weakness:

Completely useless remote. Sony really dropped the ball here. No on screen gui. I would expect that at this price. Sound management, although very configurable, it is very hard to configure and get right. I am purchasing a spectrum analyzer and pink noise generator just to get the system to sound right. The unit also gets extremely hot. As in fire hazard hot. Don't expect to be able to close your audio cabinet with this thing on. There also seems to be very minimal cross component integration and control between all my sony components. I would have expected a lot more than just all on/all off functionality.

Good product at a great price but it exemplifies sony's inability to produce a well rounded, well refined product.

Strength:

Superb sound, Build quality..and THE REMOTE!

Weakness:

None worth mentioning.

This unit is a winner in every way....and that includes the RM-TP503 remote control! The sound is everything I could wish for at this price level.
I know 2-way remotes have been criticised a lot...not least by me! The 2-way remote with the 333ES was a disaster. The touch-screen remote for the 555ES was weak too. But the remote for the 777ES is a BIG improvement.
Outwardly identical to the 555's remote, the RM-TP503's display clarity is a genuine improvement. The learning features and "qwerty" keyboard screen for name editing are new additions and generally the remote handles beautifully. My only disappointment is that the 10sec shutoff for the light wasn't extended to 30 secs or thereabouts. A few more macros would be welcome too.
In my opinion, this remote is infinitely preferable to the new Sony 2100 that folks have been praising lately...assuming all-Sony gear is being used. I fear dropping and breaking it though...Sony says a replacement RM-TP503 costs $400!!!!!
I rank this receiver alongside my wonderful Sony 7700 DVD player for satisfaction/pride-of-ownership factors. As long as it carries on its work reliably over a good period of time, this is destined to be one of the finest audio items I've owned.

Hi there, I am not a sony fan. Neither do I like there equipment. But I just wanted to say that THX is not a marketing gimming which was mention by review a liitle below. THX is a certification ( the highest standart in the audio industry) To get THX fully functional you do not just have to have the Receiver. You need THX Speakers plus the THX DVD Player etc. Than and only then you will find out what real Home Theater is.

PS:Since I am not here to start the sony debate again and again I will give this receiver 5 Stars because of the general opinion.

Strength:

Everything you really need

Weakness:

Instruction manual

Well, the majority of the stuff i had in mind is already said, so i'm going to keep this short. It has all the good things: power, clarity, gold interconnects, etc., and has done great in my home theater system. I actually like the remote. It did better than most of the other receivers. This is the best thing you can get for the price. I paid 1025, so i am happy.

My system:

Sony KV27FV15(going to upgrade to the new 36" XBR this year)
Sony DVP-S7700
Sony SLV-R1000
Sony MDS-JB930

Klipsch KSC-C1 center
Klipsch KSP-S6 Surround
Yamaha NSA-1738 ( I know, these speakers don't match the scenery, but $2000 is too much to pay for fronts. I paid more for the surrounds than the fronts. Going to upgrade as soon as I can.)

Monster and Acoustic Research cables.

Sorry about the grammar

Strength:

Great Sound Quality, Shear Power, Big Bang for the Buck, Did I say Great Sound?

Weakness:

Remote, Remote, Remote. Getting hard to find, being that Sony discontinued it!

Unbelievable sound comes out of this 55+ pound monster. After listening to receiver after receiver, I could not believe that Sony, which I was not a big fan of receiver wise, came out with a receiver that not only competes but in some cases blows away some of the more expensive H.K.'s and Denon's out there. Why, oh why, did those knuckleheads at Sony decide to discontinue one of their best ever receivers. They finally do something right and blow it by no longer producing this magnificant musical piece. If you can find it, you need to buy it. The sound this machine produces is one of the best I have ever heard, both in stereo and dolby digital modes.

My biggest complaint is the touchscreen remote, which is too big to hold, too hard to read even with the light on and playing with the contrast button, and just plain difficult to operate. I am currently looking at getting a pronto or marantz remote. Probably will stay away from the touchscreen pronto because I am so turned off by the Sony's touchscreen. Maybe I just like the tactile feel of buttons?
I am giving it 4 stars because of the remote.

The Sony V555ES is suppose to be the replacement to this unit but I find it hard to believe that with it dropping 20 or more pounds in weight that the sound quality would match that of the 777 but I cannot prejudge cause I have not listened to the 555. Sony needs to bring back the 777 and add component video switching, on-screen programming, and for gosh sakes replace that remote!

One final thing, for the people below who keep arguing back and forth, please stop messing up these ratings, this is suppose to be a review forum in which you cast your vote only once.

SOUND! Loads of inputs, Loads of power, Can change just about anything sound-wise, did I mention the SOUND?

Weakness:

Remote is a tad large and ungainly. There might be too many things to tweak for some.

Well, I finally did it...I upgraded from the STR-DE935 to the DA777ES, and boy am I glad I did. I can't believe they're selling this receiver at this price, it's a complete steal. Now, I don't consider myself an audiophile, but I enjoy great sounding music, which is all this receiver puts out. It does HT that is equally stunning as well. This is my first upgrade in building a serious (for me at least) HT and music setup, so my speakers are the next to upgrade. Even so, it seemed as if I had bought some new speakers as well. :) It also made me go through my CD collection again since there is so much more music that this receiver shows. Clarity is top notch from the highs to the lows. And, it's got plenty of headroom for heavy bass action. It gets pretty hot, but that's to be expected.
I could go on for days about this machine. It's easily the best purchase i've made in regards to music systems i've had. Oh, and as opposed to the DE line of receivers, ALL of the surround DSP modes are useful on the 777ES instead of NONE being useful on the DE935. This is the sleeper of 2000, without a doubt.

5 stars all around

no 5-ch stereo (but o-well)

HAT"S OFF TO SONY!!!!

This thing is a work of art,a monster, with monster features, power and sound. i'm glad i picked this up
(almost not, at 54 pounds ha ha) and took back the onkyo TX-DS777, it was going back any way because of a hiss/hum in the center ch.

most of the reviews here are right on, so i wont go on for days.

1st. the power the 777es puts out is just jaw dropping
i seen some of you here said you have never had it past 3 or 4,only until i got it home did i understand what that ment, WOW! i poped in the matrixs (yes i'm sick of hearing about that movie to)and turned it to '5'...................
I just about s&%# myself.

2nd.the sound is full and rich BUT if you don't think so then change it!! you can tweek the sound until your blue in the face. i wish this had 5-ch stereo like the onkyo
but like i said before'O well'

3rd.featurES way to manny to list, but one that no one said any thing about was the bitrate, that tells you how much info DTS or DD is putting out. if you have not found it yet then just play a dvd, then open the front door on the 777es
and turn the knob to the right and it will tell you some info on the dvd your playing. one more thing, plug in some headphones and check out the headphone theater mode, i did with twister(in DTS) and to my shock it sounded darn good.

so in short, GO BUY THIS RECEIVER NOW !!!!!!!!!
