This is for Richard from San Francisco.

Stop the B.S. Richard. You have never listened to the Sony 777ES. From reading what you wrote, it appears to me that you are the proud owner of a boom Box. Who are you trying to impress with your classical music repertoire? And what does Fascism have to do with evaluating receivers anyway? You must be really depressed that you spent all that money for equipment that sounds like a boom box. Just think, for a $1000 you could have had a receiver that would have been, by far, the best improvement to your system.

Strength:

Solid Build, Sound, Multitude of Tweak Options, DTS, Upgradibility?

Weakness:

Poor Manual - basically its "learn as you go", no component switching, "only 5.1 surround"?

Have had this receiver for ~3-4 mos. It continues to amaze me every day with the sound quality. Primarily used for HT(DVD movies) although the music I listen to sounds great also. Have experienced none of the problems that I've seen listed in prior reviews. The remote is a little tedious to use but is very versatile. It would be much better if Sony could write a decent users manual. The sound is incredible! Have rarely gotten the volume past 1/3. I don't have multiple sources w/ component outs so that wasn't an issue. As for DD-EX, or DTS-ES, also not an issue as there are so few software options at this time. Overall, I highly reccomend this unit, especially if you can find it for $1000.00 or under. I am rating it 5 stars because I believe this is the best reciever you will find in this price range.

Strength:

Outstanding sound quality, bass management, sound options

Weakness:

Frustratingly stupid remote, manual, inability to reassign digital sound jacks

This is an amazing receiver with superb sound quality for both music and home theater. The difference in the sound from my B&W CDMs with this receiver as compared to my old Onkyo is startling.

The most significant problem (and the reason that I cannot give this unit the highest rating) is the remote, whose software appears to have been programmed by an amateur. I would say that if you have ALL Sony equipment, it is probably fine. However, if you have anything that isn't in the supplied list of codes, expect to be using multiple remotes. The so-called learning capability is useless. All learned codes go into a completely separate set of screens that cannot be integrated with any of the devices. It is NOT possible to, for example, reassign the function of a key on any device.

This is even a nuisance with other Sony devices. For example, with my Sony Wega, I frequently use the PIP function. The 777 remote has this function in a TV subscreen. However, it lacks a button to switch audio between the main picture and the smaller picture. To do this with the 777 remote, one must go the the learning screen, select a tab, and program a button. Its much easier just to keep the TV remote around (or use my SL-9000)

I apologize for ranting, but for a device that has so many great features, it is disappointing to find this kind of flaw.

heft, ability, obvious quality

Weakness:

I just received this product this afternoon, so this will be more of a first impression than an indepth review. i bought this to replace my excellent str da50es, more of a want to upgrade than a need. the first thing noted beside the substantial weight, is the clean and uncluttered look of the face plate of the sony, typical of all es products. yhe second thing i noticed while making connections on the back are the gold plated terminals which is fairly common in receivers of this class, but also the gold plated screws connecting the rear panel (a very classy touch). once connections were made, and basic speaker settings installed ,i put on a dvd (tina turner live-dts). the sound was wonderful and an obvious step ahead of the 50es .the speaker settings seem to be a little easer here than with the 50es, but maybe its just me. now comes the fun/work of selecting settings among the myraid available on this rec. there are so many that once completed, i will have a 777 like no other in the world becuace it would be impossible to have two people exactly duplicate each others settings. this exclusiveness just adds to the appeal of this reciever. a note about the owners manual-its very skimpy, youd think that a receiver this complicated would have a manual the size of a book and oddly the manual for the remote is at least twice as thick. one thing i noticed while playing the dvd ,there was no delay in sound when selecting chapters as there is with the 50es,which really never bothered me, it was only about a second delay.still an improvement. for those intrested im using ars across the front, and jbls in the rear.

Awesome receiver.Nothing better regardless of price. This receiver sounds great, looks great and has worked flawlessly.I have read many complaints with regard to the remote and all I can say that mine works great and have had no problems. No componet inputs is no big deal since my rpt is fed directly.I love the fact that each input remembers their respective soundfield and therefore I do not need to adjust the volume level anymore on my MK powered sub for music and movies.Sony really has a winner on their hands so I will be very intrigued to see what they have in store on their next generation Es receivers.Sound City gave me a great price.

Great sound, sleek styling, heavy.

Weakness:

Remote turns off to soon.

I can't say much more than has already been said. The sound is great, I can't imagine anything being much better. I do wish the Eq had graphics it would make it a lot easier to set. The manual is a little weak. I love the remote, I just wish it would stay on longer, its so frustrating. Anybody considering buying this unit should buy it, you will not be disappointed. There are many features on this unit to help tailor the sound to anyone's taste. I really like the cinema ex modes, they sound amazing. One other feature worth mentioning is the audio direct which can be used for superior analog sources such as SACD.

Remote (needs to allow you to reprogram keys)

I listened to alot of recievers before I purchased the sony. The Marantz was very nice but I like to crank up the volume from time to time and felt this unit laked in the high end. The denon was alright but just cant be put in the same catagory as the sony. As for the yamahas I really havent liked their sound dating back to the 70's. I was not able to listen to the H/K before I purchased the sony, since it was not available at the time. I have listened to it since and have to say it is the closest to the sony, but overall I still like the sony.

The 777 has a great amp section, unbelievable paramaters, and great looks. I am not a stereo guru but I know what I like and the 777 is it. It does everthing I want with no problem at all.

This is the best reciever out there for the money . I highly recommend this unit to anyone.

Amplifier, sound, looks, build, automatic Dolby Digital detection, options to tweak or control vitually everything

Weakness:

Remote. You need two years of college and strong arms and legs to operate and lift this thing

Got this receiver from Sound Distributors.Com for $1195.00. Crutchfield wanted $1500.00.
Took me 5 minutes to get the proper leverage to lift
this receiver out of the box as it is HEAVY! That has to
be a good testament to the quality of the amplifier. I must say the Sony ES logo on the box is a nice touch also.
Once I got her up and running with a 5 channel setup (Klipsch RB5's front/rear, Klipsch RC3 center, Klipsch KSW15 sub)I was shocked). I used the Mummy as my test DVD. The Sony reproduced every tiny detail through the Klipsch speaker system and I caught myself looking back at the rear surrounds because I was spooked by the effects. Musical passages were seperated by the vocals coming from the RC3 so clean that you do not have to rewind every minute because you could not hear what was said.
The receiver also played stereo (2 channel) so well that I felt like I was the track producer in the sound room while the artist sang on stage. There is no 5 channel stereo like the Denon's. That did not affect my purchase at all. There is also a anolog direct button for clean natural listening.
I love the automatic Dolby Digital detection. There is a blue light that comes on to alert you that you are indeed listening to Dolby Digital. This is important because with DVD's like Sleepy Hollow the light will not come automatically because you have to go into the DVD menu and change it yourself (Damn you Sleepy Hollow!). I also listened briefly to the other surround sound modes and yes some are actually tempting to listen to but I do not listen to them while watching movies (no matter what receiver you use they will always add some sort of moise).
Did you know that there is nothing that cannot be tweaked on this receiver. How about room size, wall hardness, screen depth size, speaker distance, and a bunch of advanced tweaks that I have to take a course on soon to know what they mean.
The remote is LCD and pardon me but Hate LCD's. I use the remote from the Sony DVPS7700 to control the volume functions for the receiver (yes you can do that). Enough said.
The electric revolving door in the front is so cool. your friends will think you are elegant or rich or something when they see that.
This receiver is also upgrade proof with some fancy chip that you can take back to Sony when some new format comes out and have them install. I really do think that this receiver is a combination of Sony's two famous seperates. What a value. Wife loves it. 5 stars
