Strength:

-Produces big, accurate, clean sound! -Ablility to adjust LFE low cut off for all speakers. -Nice on TV screen configuration tool

Weakness:

Remote could be a bit nicer for such a great receiver. (ie like the remote included with the DA4ES) Everything can be done from this remote though.

Upgraded to a DA2ES from a Sony STR-DE725 (1998 model year), what a difference in sound! At the time of the upgrade my HT setup consisted of Infinity SM 120's up front and 3 small Infinity speakers for a center and surrounds. The sound of all sources sounded much bigger, tighter and cleaner! I have sense replaced my Infinity speakers with Definitive Technology BP2006TL's and a CLR2300 center channel. Now I'm cooking with really great sound! The DA2ES has a boat load of features and useful options. A very nice feature, which most high end receivers do not offer is the ability to adjust the LFE low cut off for all speakers and sub-woofer high cut. My DefTech CLR2300, which has an 8" powered sub-woofer, is set to Small with a 40Hz low cut. This adds a nice touch to overall mid and low bass sound. The CLR2300 connected via speaker cable only BTW. If you can listen to an entry level Sony receiver and a Sony ES receiver side by side. You will notice a big difference in sound! Well worth the extra money spent in my opinion. My Setup: Receiver - Sony STR-DA2ES DVD - Sony DVP-S300 TV - Sony 27" WAGA Front LR - Small w/80Hz low cut off, running both Monster speaker cable and sub-woofer cable off a Y. Center - Small w/40Hz low cut off, Monster speaker cable only Surround - Small w/80Hz low cut off Subwoofer - Yes, with 80Hz high cut For now although may change.

Strength:

Easy to set up. 6.1 audio

Weakness:

No 7.1 inputs Would like an LCD remote

For the price this receiver is awesome. I use it to power my JBL Studio series speakers. It has no problems at all, never sounding strained or distorted. It has plenty of inputs and all the features you could ask for short of 7.1 inputs.

Strength:

6.1, DTS ES, Dolby Digital EX, HD switching, Lotsa inputs:)

Weakness:

Remote is a little week but easy to use, no 2 way remote, not silver

After i purchased this I started to expirience some cognotive disodence towards not buying the 4ES for only a couple hundred more. However this amp does everything I could ever expect from an amp but the 4es does that much more

Strength:

Where do I start? Great warranty support. Almost as much a pleasure to look at as to listen to!

Weakness:

A little hum from the transformer

I'll make this pithy. The STR-DA777ES or any of it's other derivations is without question Sony's highest expression of "One Box Art".

Strength:

Strong clean amps. Versitle preamp section.

Weakness:

Tuner only average. Would rather tuner was left out and a seperate one was available. The TA-VA777ES is the samme unit without the tuner. This is a personal wish and dosen''''''''t really detract from this fine piece of electronics.

Very versitle system, with lots of clean power. Great Bass management system that allows great realistic movie sound with only a modest investment in speakers.(less than $2000. including two Boston subs) This also allows for music reproduction that most HT receivers can''''''''t touch. I think it is the best bargain of all time in combined HT and music reproduction.

Weakness:

Remote.. Heavy, clumbersome and batteries don''t last long.

I''ve owned this receiver for an extensive period of time and still love the sound it produces. Who wouldn''t. I noticted that there is a firmware upgrade on the product. Sony VUCD-777A Software upgrade kit for STR-DA777ES. I checked Crutchfield.com and the price is $129.95 rather then the $25 suggested on this web site. Question. Is is really worth this amount of money for what you receive in return? Anyone know where you might purchase this at a cheaper price? That amount seems rather high. Please respond to sap_669@yahoo.com.... Don''t forget the underscore between sap and the 669 number. Thank you if you take the time to respond.

Where is the 200W BTL???

Let's give back to the Internet community.
I had the 555ES for 3 months waiting for 777ES that I finally got on the 12th jan 2000 (one of the first delivery to regular folks).
Difference between 777ES and 555ES.
Mass: 54lbs vs. 35lbs
Rated Power Consumption: 450W vs. 380W
Rated Power: 120W 8ohm (no difference on paper!)

I do not trust anybody; so I open them up...
The 777ES has the same transformer (visual comparison) as the TA-N9000ES and same size capacitor 2 x 18000 microFrad
while the 555es has a smaller transformer with 2 x 15000 microFarad.

The power stage in the 777ES looks IDENTICAL to the TA-N9000ES: two cooling heat sink with 10 power transistor type "SONY NEP 250" quite larger than the ones used in the 555es (SK SAP 15 NY 9xxxx and one heat sink only)

Other noticeable differences: 777ES has a 9 pins serial port (?) (not to be used by the user yah right!), two coaxial digital input (instead of one in the 555es) and one output for the dual room amplifier.

According to these revelation the 777es should be 15% more powerful than the 555es. In practice... it is! I obtain the same SPL at a ca. 15% less volume angle than with the 555es.

The 777es is nothing else than an TA-N9000ES + TA-E9000ES in one box: same components same lay-out on the power side.

The remote controls is one rev higher RM-TP503 (502 for the 555es) but basically no improvement. TO SONY: WE NEED MORE CONTRAST THE BACKLIGHT SHOULD COME ON AT DARK AUTOMATICALLY FOR MORE TIME AND THE SHAPE SHOULD BE HAND FRENDLY. I end up using my Panasonic TV remote most of the time.

Missing in action: 200W BTL stereo mode. WHERE IS IT? No mention in the manual. Please help me on this one.

SOUND: The 555es has great sound. The 777 is great with noticeable more dynamic power (when the wife is not at home) and two D/A setting Standard-Slow . DVD AC-3 and DTS is great (note: i do not have the rear channel speakers or sub.)

Speaker: custom made (3rd serie) 3 way tower Vifa 8", Audax 4" carbon, Vifa 1" silk dome 12db cross over with many high dump - low fs features. I got the 555es to PROTECT! at 50% of the dial. Have not got that far with 777 yet.

The overall rating is 4 till I find where the 200w BTL are.
Ciao
