Weakness:

the senseless rivarly in this forum. facist people that refuse to except difference in opinion.

RESPONSE TO NEIL HATCH:

you are obviously using horrible speakers, which would explain your taste in the sony receiver. i guess they wre made for eachother. you are a sony fanatic and that compromises your judgement to review this product objectively as i have. you are a fool to attack the 995 which is probably the most well built receiver as far as receiver's go. i don't get why you people are so insecure as to attack everyone that gives this product a sub-five-star review. the truth of the matter is that i compared the sony 777 and a yamaha 800 side by side in stereo mode using a harman kardon cd player optically and into my klipsh references demoing it in tracks like gustav mahlers syphony 5, bach's ave maria, chopin's nocturne and the sony did not not produce as well highs as the 800, the sound image was horrible as the speakers would not produce an exceptable soundstage (which it did in the yamaha). in kathy trocolli's everything changes, the vocals were flat (not in the 800). the bass was rumbly and sloppy in jon secada's just another day (still murky in my yamaha which suggests i need a better woofer, but far better as yamaha has more control over the bass response). i'd have more to say on the onkyo too (i think it's a bad value) but this isn't the place for it.

Strength:

Awesome detail, clarity, soundstaging, depth and loads of power.RS232 port for upgrade.

Weakness:

No RDS/EON functions, No BTL functions, cheap powercord (like most other SONY amps here).
Remote a little improved and NOT compatible with other SONY AV models.(DA50ES,555ES & etc).

The performance of 777ES blows the 50ES out the window after doing a A/B test. There's so much more fidelity in the sound that I've decided to put the 50ES back to it's packing box and shelve it. I should think I was almost deaf all this while missing all the details from some CD's and DVD's I have. I had thought the 50ES was awesome but after some hours listening to the 777ES, there's no turning back.
I had a choice of having the TA-E9000ES seperates but I still wanted a built-in tuner, so the one box 777ES was the logical choice.

I took the cover open had a good look and it's awsome in comparison to the other models, except the 9000ES.
Plus points:
80 to 90% Nichicon Gold audio grade capacitors.
Dual Pellet Sony NEP250 power transistors mounted on large heatsinks.(but still run a hot in tropic weather)
Huge ES R-core transformer.
Burr-Brown PCM1704 24/96 DAC. (it's the best audio grade dac from BB)
Nice motorized control panel.
More DSP modes one would ever use.
RS232 serial port for firmware upgrade (Version 1.01 shipped). Read in a forum that V1.03 is available from the service centre to address some hiss problem. I've not found any yet or am I still deaf to it.

Minus points:
No tuner RDS/EON functions. I have that on my DA50ES. Shouldn't the 777ES have it too?
BTL mode switch would be nice to have for stereo enthusiasts. (Available in TA-E9000ES)
THX mode should definitely be included..Onkyo 777 has it and it's about the same price.
The remote display has improved but it's seems not backward compatible with other models.
I still don't see it as future proof with only 5.1 inputs.

Strength:

Sound, Quality, Price/Value, Connections.

Weakness:

Remote, Manual, all the settings

Most has been covered... The sound quality from this receiver is great. The price is very fair for what you get and a 5yr warranty to boot, plus it's upgradeable.
Plenty of connections.
The remote is really a waste and I don't know who designed it, but it really stinks, bulky and difficult to use at times. Half of my equipment (Yamaha, Onkyo, Toshiba) doesn't accept the codes for half of the functions. Even my Sony VCR doesn't like the codes. It's sad to say at this price, but ditch the remote. I'm using my previous Yamaha programable remote.
The manual is extreemly weak and you have to go through a lot of functions to get to the setting you want. That's okay, no big deal, but a bit of a pain.

All in all a very good buy, I'm very happy.

This is for Richard.

You’re not an audiophile. You’re an audiophile want to be, especially with a Yamaha receiver in your lineup. You have obviously become accustomed to the poor sound you are getting from the weakest link in your setup; the Yamaha receiver. I have owned the Yamaha 995, the Onkyo 777, and I now own the Sony 777ES. I can tell you this, the Yamaha did not even come close to the performance of the Onkyo and I was embarrassed when I did an A/B comparison to the Sony 777ES. Compared to the Sony, the Yamaha has harsh highs, obscure midrange, and a bass that sounds artificial. Why do you want to BS the public? Are you upset that you didn’t get the Sony 777ES and you now have to settle for a Malaysian mass produced piece of crap.

Strength:

Power,Sound Fields,Adjustments,Hookups

Weakness:

The remote is not all that bad,but it should have been better. The other thing is if you use RCA connections and then want to use S video on another componet it won't let you,it won't switch the signal to a different hookup. You must stay with the same type of connection.

I don't know all the tech. info but the 777es is well worth the money.Just don't pay full retail. It made my Ovt.3's come alive. Now I have IL60's hooked up,the windows are about to fall out!Great.
