This is a very good DD receiver for the money. IMHO there isn't any other HT receiver for sale at this time that sounds as good for critical stereo listening. SGHT said the same thing. The remote with on-screen display controls my Pana., Pioneer,JVC component system. The remote will drive you crazy sometimes when you try to do something out of sequence or that you are not supposed to do. It is smarter than you are , and won't move the cursor to that button. It took me 4 months to get used to it. Sony can do better. Also internal crossover should be variable for each speaker set like 9000ES preamp or at least 80 hz like most, not 120hz. Gripes on previous reviews because you can't mix S and composite inputs are unwarranted. It's the same as others regardless of price.Get a composite to S converter or S video switcher with a comb filter. Paid $1100 delivered from Uncles. Cheap for the money and 5 yr warranty too.

Strength:

Sound quality, looks

Weakness:

A few annoying things, plus no DTS

I purchased this receiver at a Sony Factory Outlet store in Grove City, PA. I figured I couldn't get a better deal than getting an ES receiver for $319.

The receiver sounds and looks great. It matches my 7700 dvd player quite nicely.

It doesn't have a DTS decoder which is a bummer. The remote is large, but I don't find that a problem. I dislike that I must use either all composite or s-video inputs for the receiver so I don't I have to switch the video input on my TV. The on screen display was a b1tch until I figured out a way arround some of the menus. It was very difficult navigating through a DVD menu using the OSD. With a few changes, I now never have to go through the OSD to change TV channels or watch a DVD. To do this, you must tell the receiver that you are using an "other" device for the "ir setup" and manually program the commands. Example, for my Sony DVD player I programmed the receiver so I can use the numeric keypad on the remote to navigate through a DVD menu. For my VCR, I actually used a CD type device in the ir setup, so I can use more keys. I set the next and previous track buttons on the remote to be channel up and down. I also added "display" so I can use XDS easily. I thought I'd share this with you since it makes controlling your a/v system much much easier.

Now my only dislikes are the no DTS, and only s-video/composite inputs, however they really don't bother me much at all.
