Strength:

GREAT receiver for not too much money-
Very powerful with clear-undistorted sound from low to high-
Awsome selection of soundfields (almost too many)

Weakness:

Have not found any yet!

Just got my hands on this STR-DB930 yesterday-
Had it on order from Sound City for three weeks and finally got tired of being put off week after week-so canceled my order and bought it from Good Guys-who honored the Sound City price!
I compared this unit with the Denon 3300 and the Sony 555ES-and in both cases they all sounded very close with the 930 having a little more "presence" and for HUNDREDS less!
One note-the 930 drives the center channel pretty hard-so be prepared to replace your cheaper center speaker (as I have had to do) 'cause all of its faults will clearly present themselves.
Dolby Digital and DTS are AWESOME!
This receiver really made my Sony 530 DVD come alive. I would recommend that you get your hands on one of these units before they are all sold out. Sound City is a good choice-IF you are willing to wait (ask a lot of questions before ordering)-they are an authorized Sony dealer and they have an 800 number (800-888-5343)and they have a retail outlet in New Jersey (not all of the folks selling on the Web are authorized dealers-BEWARE)
In summary-this is undoubtedly the best audio video receiver currently on the market for under $800 and certainly a steal at $400-get one-you will not be disappointed)
For specs-look at www.crutchfield.com 'cause the Sony site doesn't even acknowledge that they ever made them-

Strength:

Complete Sound Control for Difficult Rooms

Weakness:

Remote AND REPAIR COSTS!!!

It's seldom that a lower number yields a better product in consumer electronics. The DB930 is clearly an exception when compared to the higher numbered "low-end" 935. WHAT A DIFFERENCE in controls, features, feel, and sound. I consider the $500.00 money well spent for our TV room. Secondly, our house is 30+ years old and NOT built with a Media Room in mind. The fully featured controls of the DB930 really help overcome the shortcomings of our environment. I've been please with this unit since I took it out of the box and hooked it up.

NOW THE MAJOR COMPLAINT (This review system doesn't allow the word B1TCH).
My elderly mother-in-law live-in decided to water the ARTIFICIAL plant on top of the DB930. To say the least, it is TOAST and folks, this ain't no warranty problem. HOWEVER, I was SHOCKED when I got a repair estimate for exactly $11.00 less than I paid for the unit new ($489 parts and labor). That is for only ONE PC board plus labor (only 1 hr @ $43/hr). COME ON Sony, get your repair parts cost in line, or consumers will try somewhere else.

Anybody out there know the secret to Sony's repair "whine-line"? I've tried email to their customer service repair site. NO JOY...

Strength:

value, feature (loads of them), quality

Weakness:

remote (the pre-program codes), manuals

When I first listen to this unit I wanted to box up the thing and take it backup to the dealer, but after playing around with EQ, speakers settings, etc. I was very satisfied with the results. FWIW, I took home the 2 Yamaha and HK and hooked it up to my system, I have to say I kinda liked the R-V1105 but wasn't totally satisfied with the way it sound with my Energy Take 5 speakers, but when I hooked the STRDB930 it gave me what I was looking for, which is more bass, crisp and clear sound, greate DD and DTS surround sounds. There is no doubt it's best receiver in $500.00-$800. price range.

Strength:

Sounds great, low price, nice design (comparing to 940).

Weakness:

Hum from the subwoofer output line!, not able to use "Subwoofer" when playing "2Channel".

I have a little enoying problem:
I have a humming sound from the subwoofer line out, the humming sound increases depending on how much text there is in the display?! Is it a faulty ground connection?! The problem is not on the other outputs (front, center, rear).
Can somebody help me? Mail mail!
Thanx!

Strength:

Excellent sound, great i/o conrol.

Weakness:

Hiss, but problem solved!!!

I've loved this machine since I got it despite the hiss that I consistently heard. I brought it in twice to be repaired, followed up with an electrician to make sure that it wasn't in the wiring, and checked it at the neighbors house.
Then, I noticed that when the unit would move, the hiss would decrease. As it got worse, if I "bounced" the unit, I noticed that the hiss would decrease.

With this information, my repair place was able to determine that the hiss came from faulty grounds INSIDE the unit. He resecured the grounds, and the unit is working perfectly.

If you have hissing problems with this unit, I strongly recommend somebody knowledgable checking the internal grounding.

Well, if you are low on budget, this is a great receiver.Note, that the db830 is almost the same for even lower bucks - it only lacks the 2way remote and a some inputs.

Pros: price, good DD DPL decoding
Cons: cheap amp section, DACs, bad 96k repro

(That one was supposed to be an Euro/Asian version - how could it surface in the states? - just wondering.)

Five stars to compensate for the mindblanked one-star review.
Otherwise I would give it four.

Wait a second ... a review on July 30 from someone name 'H.....' is a 5 star (even though he does not have one of these) is 5 stars and 9 days later is 1 star and is calling it crap along with all Sony stuff (talk about a mood swing). Can someone be a big boy and grow up and just reivew it once and move on with their childless comments!

I have this unit and it works and more importantly sounds great. Runs cool and is affordable. No, its not an ES series, but its a step in the right direction.

This receiver rocks! Name any other receiver where you get DD and DTS decoding, tons of DSP modes, an armada of inputs, 110 watts per channel, excellent sound
quality, and Sony ES construction all at a VERY affordable price. How can you
go wrong? I am more into car audio but I still enjoy home audio and with my current receiver I could not harness all of the benefits my new DVD player has to offer, so I decided to uprgrade to DD. Now I must admit, my old receiver was nothing special, a five year old TEAC, but this sony blew that one away. (literally and figuratively) I have yet to find a quarrel with this machine. Even the remote has grown on me. This thing is the best deal out there. I was originally going to spring for the STR-DE935, but after reading the horrible reviews I found this one instead. I give this five stars for quality, features, and most importantly price. This receiver, in my opinion, is like a mid-level ES machine at a fraction of the price.
