Strength:

Good value, works well with the FS2's

Weakness:

None

Superb system. I have it set up with a Mission FS2 NXT flat speaker package and a rather inexpensive Wharfedale DVD.

The amp works well with the speakers, producing sound that is very clear and 'airy'. It manages to fill up the room very well.

The only hissing I get is if you turn up the amp very high but have a low input. You'll only notice it if you actually listen to it.

See http://www.flat-speaker.co.uk for more info and reviews.

Strength:

superb 5.1 audio with 23 dsp your spoilt for choice classy look and feel brings any sound track to life stereo is great treble crisp bass tight a bargain!

Weakness:

i still find the remote takes some getting used to however thats about all

ive only just recently bought this so these are my first thoiughts on this amp, as a listener of music and someone who enjoys a good movie i wanted a one box system as opposed to an ampprocessor/combo which i had tried previously before my sherwood (anyway thats another story!) i immediately tried some of the more action shots on gladiator the system immediately brought the sound track buzzing to life then try disc no 2 fight club from the initial opening sequence i was totally impressed, these were tried in varios cinema modes which would take me ages to tell you about! so far more than impressed! anyhow now the music spin automatic by r.e.m.i didnt think it could sound so good night swimming, man on the moon , and everybody hurts sound sweeter and crisper than i thought possible, then tried fat of the land prodigy and the menacing firestarter , breathe, and of course funky s***sounded awesome with excellent midrange and a lively pulsating bass overall id have to give this top marks

Strength:

Great DTS and DD!!! and the front looks are awesome w/ my Sony Wega. Bass is great and lots of tweaking you can do!

Weakness:

A little Hiss, not much... HISSSS in Prologic mode when watching Payperview movies:( Remote take a sec or two to bootup:( SAID to pay $530 after i saw $70 drop just after one week:(

FedEX were nice enoguth to feop it off m neighbor house instaed of leaving a note which i would be pissed but there cool wiith me. When i got this the box was HEAVY and it was paacked nice. I LOVE Heavy machines:) Came with manuals which taught me things i didnt know but need a little more updating, the remote is Okkk but not the far best, and it was a Blast to set this puppy UP.... doesnt have cheap inputs ALL GOLD BABY:) i use S-Video connections so the video transmission is SHARP and sounds great when watching movies or MTV Music. I ran Gladiaor on DTS and DD both and DTS was far more ralistic than DOlbyDigital 5.1 DOH!! but one problem was that it went in Protection Mode after Volome level 4.5... which kinda made me mad but i guess its because my speakers cant handle it even though they could handle 100watts!... The Gold outputs makes alot of difference and the quality is way clearer and image is sharper. the front inputs were useful to me to hookuip my PC, VCR, or Dreamcast, PS2 when i needed to play... one thing i also love is that you can name each MODE so its very cool to name the modes. Secondly, I love the tweaking you can do with this reciever. there are 100 options to tweak your sound in EVERY way and the best part is that its ONSCREEN! no need to get at the front to change it! there is ALOT of hiss during movies in Prologic mode but not when playing DVDS or games. I opened up my reciever to see how it looks inside and its way better design than the DE series!! way bigger transistors and the Transformer is better too. The difference between STR-DE845 and DB940 is alot. IF you watch movie every other day get DB940, if ure like me and ure just a reg Audio Enthusiast who watches dvd's once a week get the DE-845. the DE-845 and 945 are still good for DTS and DD but u gotta spend extra money for the looks and the hardware inside!!

Strength:

Number of inputs, power and specs for the price point, cool remote once you've figured out how to make it do what you want.

Weakness:

Average sounding in stereo mode and yes, the notorious hiss!

Overall a reasonably good receiver for the price. As stated above, I thought music reproduction is pretty average but sounds awesome in DD and particularly DTS mode though. I guess that is what it's mainly designed for. There is definitely no going back to my mere ProLogic HK AVR25 MKII that I upgraded from - as far as I'm concerned, ProLogic is dead! The same as a lot of others, I found the 27 odd sound field modes nothing to write home about and I hardly ever use any of them! They might have been better to design half a dozen better sounding modes instead.

Lots of power, even though I'm yet to fully experience it as I haven't been past number 3 on the volume dial yet! The thing with the hiss though, is that it is pretty obvious after 4 on the volume dial when nothing is playing. On my brother's Yamaha receiver, you don't get any hiss until the dial is really close to max volume. With regards to this hiss problem and the fact that some of us experience it and some of us don't, I'm wondering if it's perhaps a case of where the receiver is manufactured...??? Mine is made in Malaysia and I was wondering if any of you whose receiver is made elsewhere (Japan, UK, US, etc) have this problem as well. On the other hand, if they all made in Malaysia then this theory doesn't apply. Maybe they use different (cheaper) components in certain countries..??? However, if anyone has any further thoughts on this it would be worth considering. Of course the hiss isn't a problem at all when there's lots of action and stuff happening on screen.

The rest of my gear :

Sony DVP-670D 5 Disc DVD Player
Sony F29 29" TV
JBL MRV 308 Front Speakers
JBL MR Centre
JBL MR25 Rears
(Speakers are probably overdue for an upgrade but there's no more cash in the HT kitty for the time being!)

Unfortunately I can't really give it 5 stars because of the hiss "problem" and average stereo performance otherwise all is ok and I'd rush out and get one if you can get it for the right price!

Strength:

Features for the price e.g connectivity,DSP modes, tuner,Dolby Digital and D.T.S. Sound, silver finish, power to all channels.

Weakness:

slight hiss when bass boost is activated, remote control can be user unfriendly but it does not talk back. :D

Power,D.T.S.(hearing Gladiator was fantastic)DD,live house dsp mode when listening to music.I liked the facilities on this receiver with both connectivity and dsp modes. For the price it is very hard to beat.I liked the silver version because it looked more stylish and expensive and matched my other separates. The power difference compared to my previous yamaha amp was very noticeable with a quoted 110 watts all round. The on screen menu was easily accessible and programming in my vcr and sony dvd player to the receivers remote was fine....unfortunately the remote did not become very user friendly after that. When activating the bass boost button a slight hiss is heard but this is less annoying when the bass boost button is turned off.I have Tannoy M3 Fronts and rears with a Tannoy MC Centre (no sub as yet)...but the bass coming from these speakers is tremendous with this receiver even without a sub at this stage. It is in a price class of it's own.Sheer value for money and highly recommended to anyone aiming or targetting this type of budget...SIT BACK AND ENJOY......!
