Strength:

Input/outputs, powerful, valuable, remote, functions etc etc...

Weakness:

None what so ever! Someone said that they heard a "Hiss" sound, then i would just suggest that you buy some thicker cables to plug in the goldplated plug in the back! I sure cannot hear any "Hissing" sound.

I have used this receiver for a while now and this i my second post. I have no complains what so ever! It sounds excellent in DTS or DD and really good in stereo mode. I am really satisfied with this receiver and I recommend it for anyone whos in search for a great receiver. There is no distortion at all, and I am using:

Philips DvD 711
Audio Pro Black Diamond
Wharfedale Center
Mission rear speakers

You won't be dissapointed!

Strength:

Well built, DTS, 5.1

Weakness:

The remote

I've had this receiver for 3 months now and it just keeps getting better with every CD and DVD I play. My friends have Denon and Onkyo an whenever I watch a movie by either of them, I can't wait to get home to watch it again. The bass was a bit weak so I bought the SAW-M40 and wow. This was just what it needed. For the price I paid and compared to what I've heard elsewhere I know I came out on top. My friends seem to think that because they paid more, their products are better. Not true, just listen for yourself.

I have written before about this awesome amp/rec. the other say out of curiosity, I connected a small JPW mini monitors(very old) to the speaker B set, in addition to leaving the rest of my speakers conn. (Mission 702e,70c1,70ds,70ASE subs). set the speaker selector to A+B, change the Imp. to 4ohms. and slipped Galdiator DVD...wow, what a change. more detailed even at low volume. It seemed that because my room size is a bit small, I can go no further than 3 on the vol. knob, any more and my windows shakes. by adding the mini monitors, I get more of the mid range stuff, not much bass(I didn't need it anyway), and better control at low volumes. Is this the same principle Yamaha is using by having front effects channels? try it out and see.

Listening to this model from different places gives different sounds. Also if you look at the specs they are different. Imports to UK have different specs.
This is why some people complain of a hissing noise etc. Listen to the exact machine that you are going to buy. I listened to this in one shop and thought it sounded extremely good. Used same DVD to listen in another, cheaper shop, and it sounded terrible, with loud hissing noise etc. I went back to the first shop and paid about $200 US more, but it was definitely worth it.

Strength:

This reciver has an unbelivable sound if you know how to use it (that is pretty easy though). It has an enormous power reserve and it is good build, a functional remote and some of the DCS modes are stunning.

Weakness:

Some minor things that should be done in a different way, but nothing else that I care about.

Some people are affected by some hiss. Use the digital input and all the hiss will be gone. The analouge direct (AD)function gives an unbeliavble soundstage with clear sound and mighty bass. If you have a good DVDCD player connected to the AD input the Sony is one of the best buys on CD audio in this price range. I bought a demo DVD with all the Dolby Digital, DTS and THX demos. I have tried all the Digital Cinema Sound (DCS) modes, and the sound is better than good in normal DD/DTS, but if you turn on the DCS Cinema Studio B EX the sound is unbelivable. I have then set the screen mode to deep and walls to middle and then the sound is flying around the room and the room feels much larger than it actually is (4x5m). The build quality of the 940 is extremly good. The thick chassis, the good internal wiring and the 2 degrees angle on the internal boards prevents internal vibration due to high sound levels. If you want this demo disc buy the "DVD Demystified 2nd edition" book. It is shipped with a demo DVD.

My equipment is
Sony STR-DB940
Nad T550 dvd player
Qln 604 speaker
A large sub and good rear speakers
Nordost Flatline Gold speaker cable
Monster i350 interconects
Sharp XV-C2E projector

Strength:

well built. features. Sony reliability. good sound. better than competition for price range.

Weakness:

none at price point.

got this for £300 ( 460 US Dollars ), due to it now being discontinued and sold off cheap.

Compared to my valve audio amp and Epos speakers for my main hi-fi, this sounds like total rubbish for music.

BUT, for Cinema use, its superb everywhere. it IS a cinema amp after all, and for those HISS complaints, well ALL amps hiss, and with a high power unit like this, youll hear the hiss as you turn up the volume. if you use efficient speakers, youll get no hiss, as the power output will be LOUD with less watts.

Use quality speakers and cables. I use JBL Control 1Gs, and they are solid for cinema use.

A Beautiful Piece of equiptment, a gadgets mans dream. All the bells and whistles with a great price....

Weakness:

still searching.....

I find the Sony STR-DB940 a cross between a Leopard and Classy lady, it acts wild but looks good. Easy on the working mans wallet but high tech enough to satisfy the audio enthusiast in every one! Althougt I found the manual a little intimidating I was able to kick into gadget man mode and forego the manual (play with the buttons till you get it right.) please use the optic line when setting up your DVD you wont regret it.oh yea get the insurance it cost 110 dollars to fix the remote , The two way remote!

Strength:

Inputs, outputs, power, remote, listening modes, nearly everything

Weakness:

Turtle like remote

I absolutely love this unit. I borrowed a friends 840 to test my system before deciding if it was time for a new receiver. WOW, I didn't what to give it back, after a month of testing (and my friend getting mad), I realized that it was time to purchase. I recommend this unit for anyone that doesn't need THX or wants to spend under $800.

Strength:

Many features, the remote.

Weakness:

Very hard to find any...

This receiver is one I am going to stick with for many years ahead thanks to my 5 year warranty :) It has many configurations making the sound perfect for just your speakers, mine sounded alot better with this receiver. The sound feels very controlled when playing in Digital or DTS.

All the radiostations is lined up in the remote display making it very easy to change quickly into desired station. BTW, the remote can controll almost every modern electronic there is today, pre-programmed. Or otherwise you can program yourself.. I sure put out alot of money on this toy, but it was sure worth it.
