Strength:

This receiver is very powerfull (5x110 watts). Very COOL remote

Weakness:

The remote control also
Hiss

As said before the receiver is very powerfull and keeps it quality at any volume range (I didn't test it at full power, that WAY to loud). The remote is nice, but I prefer a normal one. This one works fine, but it isn't all that. The display on the reveiver (dot matrix) is very clear.
And all the buttons you won't use much are hidden.

If you look at the back of receiver it looks like a wall in Yugoslavia, that much holes it has.

There is also a digital out (optical) and that something you won't find easy at a same quality (onkyo and denon) receivers.

It gets really warm, but it when you won't put a cd player (or so) on top of it, it doesn't really matter.

The receiver has allot of bass with out the MEGA BASS on and the equalizer on standard. With my B&W speakers it sounds fantastic!!!

Strength:

Everything especially POWER

Weakness:

No db display for the volume (VERY MINOR)

I read reviews on this receiver for the past 8 months. Even though people have been experiencing the hissing, I decided to get it anyway. I got it brand new in box on ebay for 465.00 including shipping. I have to say that I have not heard any significant hissing at all. If you pause the audio source and turn the volume up you will hear hissing with almost any receiver. This is simply ridiculous to do, it is almost as if people are reaching to find problems. With a source playing there is no audible hiss that I have come across. Of course I haven't even had the volume half way yet because the power is awesome. I can't believe the power difference between this receiver and my old Kenwood which costed more brand new than this one does. The only complaints I have would be no digital input for CD and this does cause a little problem for those of us that have a MD player and the other problem is no display for the volume. When positioned to the right of the reciever you cannot see what volume you are at. But, I don't think that there is a receiver made which satisfies every need of every user. This is just not feasible. Therefore this receiver is the best that I have heard so far and for the price it is a great purchase.

Now about the remote: I think the remote is excellent. And for those of us that have compatible Sony equipment, the 2-way feature is tight. It downloads the names of your CDs, MDs, DVDs, etc and displays them on the LCD on the remote in order of disc slot or alphabetically. This makes using a 400 disc changer a breeze. You can find any CD you want in seconds. And even though it takes a little time to do certain things with the remote it is a small gripe for what the remote is capable on doing. Just take the time to sit down and learn the features. Overall this is a great purchase. It is the single best A/V component I have ever bought.

My system includes:
Sony STR DB940 receiver
Sony CDP CX-400 cd player
SOny MDS JE 530 md player
Panasonic RV-30 dvd player
JVC S4800 SVHS vcr
JBL studio series speakers (S-center, S26s, S310s)
2 Acoustic Research S112PS subs

Strength:

Amaizing power. Nice finish. No stupit flashing lights like some of the cheaper modles.

Weakness:

Only one Coaxial digital input

This is an amazing machine. I must have listened to 15-20 receivers before I decided to purchase this machine. Sony out did all of them with this great receiver. I purchased it in Sydney at Basement Hi-Fi for $899 Australian Dollars.

If anyone is thinking of a new receiver, even for high end use, I would definitely recommend this.

This is my second review, everything is great!

Weakness:

None

The only thing is other's people's response to the hissing noise. I can only hear the hissing sound when nothing is playing or going on. When I'm watching a movie or listening to music in any dsp mode, there is no hissing whatsoever. Anybody else finds something, please post it. Overall this baby is wonderful and great, haven't been dissapointed. My setup:

This receiver
Panasonic 27in.
Pioneer Dvd player
Acoustic Research Center(excellent 5 stars/see review)
Sony Front/Rear Speakers
JBL PB-10 subwoofer(excellent 5 stars/see review)

Strength:

Good dts/DD5.1 sound. Lots of inputs. Many options for calibration.

Weakness:

Hiss.

The dts/DD5.1 decoding is good for the price. But I noticed the hissing sound that some other users are complaining about. Read that it is due to a faulty dsp chip or something like that. I pause my DVD and turn the volume to about 12 o'clock. I can hear the hiss quite clearly without putting my ear near the speakers. The hiss is coming from all the five speakers. I have tried to do this on another shop's demo set but I could not detect any hiss from that unit. They are set up using Sony's speakers. I am using JBL speakers. I guess my unit is faulty and I also suspect that I was sold a demo set. Will check with Sony directly on this hissing issue. I do not understand why a company like Sony can produce such a totally different quality in the same product. If this is the quality that I am going to expect from Sony, then this will definitely be my last Sony.

Can other users who experience hiss tell me at what volume does the hiss becomes obvious? Thanks.

Strength:

Good Clean power for the price, Lots of features, Many inputs, and your freinds willl think it's an ES model :0)

Weakness:

No component Video

Well, I believe this is a step up from the Yama. I am buying a new house, so I thought I should get into a real A/V receiver. Not that the yama was bad, it just lacked the power I needed to fill a real living room with sound.

Went shopping and from everything I looked at the Sony STRDB-940 definatley seems to have the most bang for the buck.I wanted a nice box, but had a limit to the cash (read wife factor) and I would say I got a pretty good value.

Shares some of the same components as it's big brother, the ES line, has great power, and I really like the remote control. It however doesnt have component video, so again I will have to hook up my DVD player to my TV, and fiber to the reciever for sound. It works, but to me it's cludgy.

All in all I cant complain for the two days I have had it, OneCall was great to work with, and kills local prices.

I'll post again when I get it set up in the new house. I will be runnig it against three in wall Definitive Tech DEFUIW75's as the Fronts and center, Def Tech's DEFUIWBP as the rear, Bi polar sound great, and the Def Tech 15TL+ sub, Can't wait to hear it!!

For now, I'll give it 5 stars for value and bang for hte buck, and 4 stars as There is some nicer receivers out there, just pring your wallet...

Powerfull clean and excelent sound quality, a veritable rats nest of buttons and dials, very versatile

Weakness:

The instruction manual,i read 10 times already and and i'm still none the wiser.more indepth explanations are required for the intelectualy challenged, like me.

Clear crisp Dolby and DTS sound, plenty of oooomph.great sound imaging, done with real precsion.Kicks the ass of my old Sherwood 925.
The amount of options to set this baby up are itense, i reckon its rocket science stuff at the moment for me, but i will stick with it.
I have read all if not most of the reviews on this amp and agree with all of the other folk that have said great things about it, i cant add much more really.
Go buy a STR940DB you wont regret it.
Coupled with my Mission 773e floor standers ,77c1 centre, 77ds rear bi polars, and a REL Q100E subwoofer, this definatly scrambles my brains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! give me some more!

100% satisfied! Simply the best receiver you can buy for the money. I paid $650 Canadian = $433 US. Great deal!
The Sony STR-DB940 has almost EVERYTHING most people need. First of all, the remote is VERY useful in programming for almost any device, and the graphical interface allows you to control settings just by looking at the remote. Next, the on-screen display allows all settings to be tweaked using your TV as a monitor. Dolby Digital, DTS. 110W x 5 at 0.07% THD and 110W x 2 at 0.05 THD. GREAT sound, MORE than enough power. I'm using this receiver with Energy eXL:16 front speakers, eXL:C center, eXL:R rears, and an eXL:S10 subwoofer. Simply amazing sound. Built-in EQ, tons of Digital Cinema surround modes, S-Video switching, headphone jack, all speakers use screw terminals, 2 sub-outs, 3 optical ins, preouts for dual room use. Amazing.

Strength:

Looks, Power, Sound, Features, Cool remote.

Weakness:

Remote, lack of 5 speaker stereo.

This was a huge step up from my Kenwood, and a big step up from my father's Sony. This receiver sounded great right out of the box, and has only gotten better. I couldn't beleive it when my living room was rockin' at 90db and the volume was only on 3, my kenwood would have to be turned all the way up to do that. My mother in law fel in love with the opera house dsp when I played Andrea Bocelli on it for her. She said it gave the sound more depth and actually sounded like you were in an opera house, I almost talked her into replacing her kenwood also. My wife likes the night theater dsp for when the kids are sleeping. On the kenwood night mode we were costantly turning the volume up and down to hear the dialog even with the center speaker turned up, not with this baby though. Once you find the volume level you like you don't touch it again and the voice stays clear and the explosions and music don't blast you out of the room. As for 5 speaker stereo I can live without it, although it would be nice. My only real complaint is the remote. I truely love it except for two problems, if you use the remote to see what's on tv the receiver go to tv mode, not nice if you want to hear the radio until you find something, and it's not really compatable with my dish network receiver. When I tried to used the preprogramed codes they only had ones for direct tv systems so I tried to use the learning functions to teach the remotes just basics like the guide and changing the channel without any luck. Also if you push a button that has a function for 2 pieces of equipment it will ask which one resulting in extra button pushing. But over all at $399 I can live with using 2 remotes and without 5 speaker stereo. Yes www.soundcity.com has these beauties for $399 you have to call them for the price though, I just couldn't resist at that price.

Weakness:

None so far...

This A/V receiver is hard to beat. I bought it from Crutchfield for $599. It was nice to work with someone who is really knowledgeable about audio products and who was not half my age. Crutchfield may not have the lowest prices on certain items, but their service and low shipping cost makes them a better value for my money.

The Sony DB series has many of the same design features offered in their ES series, but at less than half the price. You may have trouble finding the DB series at local retailers, as most only carry the DE series. Save up for the DB series and you won’t be disappointed.
