Strength:

Lots of power. This baby can push any fine speaker out there on the market. It is pre-set to 8ohms, but is capable to being switched down to 4ohms for greater power.
Sony have added 27 acoustic (sound) modes for different ambience and reverberation- there is a pre-set mode to suit every need. ie: Small Hall, Large Hall, Live, Church, Arena, Disco/Club/ etc.. (all of which can be adjusted to suit your needs.) for example: - watch the dvd: "Eric Clapton Unplugged" in 5.1 dolby digital - set the acoustic mode to "large hall" and my god! you are in the Concert! This amplifier lets you customise the wall types, the size of the speakers, the distance from the sitting area - the menu is quite complex, but well designed. For people like myself - I found these kind of options unique and rewarding. With Three Sony Studio/Cinema EX modes and digital eq's- you can play round with the bass, mid, treble till the cows come home. (all these modes are available when playing either dolby digital 2.0/5.1 or DTS) That's right! :0)
The learning remote control at first seemed a little clumsy to use- once i submitted to reading the instructions manual- it finally made sense. I now have 6 or 7 other remote controls programmed into it - the remote has a back-lit screen and the keys on the pad glow at night- which make it handy to use in all conditions.
The LCD screen on the unit is great- you have the option of of seeing what part of the eq/mode you are adjusting, either on the monitor or on the LCD screen.
There are several S-Video inputs as well as the standard gold plated AV terminals.
You can also name each of the individual inputs to suit you need -playstation, nintendo etc. - kinda cool option.
For people with bass addictions you can connect 2 subwoofers into this baby (don't really know why?) one is more than enough.
Aesthetically, this baby looks like a high end well designed amplifier - a silver metal look just gives it that high quality well designed apperance that many other amps don't have.

Weakness:

WARNING!!: don't use cheap small speaker when blasting out the DTS! you will blow em right up! i nearly popped my rear (Studio Acoustic) speakers. while on volume level 3/10! (since updated speakers and have no problem now)
the FM antenna cable that comes with the unit is cheap and anoying - it can't of cost sony any more than 20c to make- it can fall out quite easily - go get a better one!
Like I mentioned the remote might seem anoying at the start (although looking really cool) read the manual to get the most out of it.
if you do turn the gain up past 4 you will of course get a slight hissing sound which to many other reviewers is quite normal for high output amplifiers.

I've been a pioneer follower for quite some time now, but have been recently converted.
This is a fantastic non entry leval amplifier. The price was right, the functions were top notch and the design is sleek & cool.
There is more than enough power to meet with "most" peoples demand. 140watts x5 (LOUD!!!)

if you are thinking of getting a sony amp start at the QS series or higher - you'll be glad you did. I can't see this amplifier leaving for quite some time indeed. :0)

This is my first digital amplifier. I've recently upgraded from a Pro-Logic/Surround -Pioneer VSX-425. My options at the time were to get the Pioneer-509 or the Sony STRDB-940 nine out of ten retailers reccomended this amp, now i know why. I have friends with other brands of digital amps, none of which come close to this baby.

Strength:

Good sound for price point, excellent switching & inputs, build quality like a tank, sound fields ok, nice oncscreen.

Weakness:

remote is cool, but somewhat cumbersome for anything but setup; runs warm, and I am having protection problems.

Hi,
I bought this unit in a package with a complete set of reference speakers (rf3-rc3-rs3's), and was fairly happy with the setup and sound out of the box. Only problem is, I am having the infamous protection problem and would like somewhat who is in the know about this to correspond with.
Essentially, it is impossible to play any surround mode without 'protection' to kick in at any higher than a low volumne, or a spike in the sound in the movie. I had to listen to movies last night in two channel. This is in DD, or any of the surround modes including prologic.
I have been looking for a couple of months, and played this unit at the store a number of times in the Fall at considerable decibals. Just before I purchased, I went back in and they were out of stock including the demo. A couple of days later they came in, and at the store with the demo, the same thing was happening with Klipsch speakers. I assumed it was wirring or something. I have the unit set to 8 0hms, which the Klipsch are, and have tried 4 but the same thing happens. I have carefully checked all wires, and I also have a Yamah RX1000 I am checking out which I ran last night without any problem.
I am wondering:
1.) Is there some compatibility problem with the DB940 and Klipsch? I know there are those on this board that have Klipsch and this receiver without this problem. I also know it has been reported in the ES line.
2.) Since it showed up with the new deliveries, I wonder if there is a bad batch of boards?

I would appreciate comments here or E-mail me direct.

Thanks,

Milt

Strength:

I's very good, and very, very well built

Weakness:

Not one

I've buy this jewel iesterday, and i'm very happy...
It is so well built that is'nt normal for his cathegory.
I,m a ingeneer and i was impressioned for the quality of the capacitor of the supply stage.(Rubycon gold cap for audio)
The connection from the final stage and the binding posts are made with OFC (Oxigeg free copper) wire, and are of good quality. Compare with othter receivers of the same category of price, it appears more elegant and well built.
The components of the decorder are of superior quality, it's normal to find them in receiver high end and amplifier of other cathegory of price.

very loud. Nice base responce. lots of toys and settings looks good nice remote, very clever. People on this site seem to recon that it has a hiss. Well if you turn all inputs on and turn it up then yes it does have a hiss. It is stupid to say that this is the units downside because if any music is playing, the hiss is totally un-audiable. I prefer to put a film on and turn it up, rather than sit there like a sad b*st*rds with no imputs on listening for a hiss that can not be heard under normal circumstances. All processers have a hiss check it out, anyone . the reciever is very intellegent, i like the auto tuning and storeing system incorporated with in the system For the price they are going at now its time to buy. you will not regret it. put a sub on it and the party is really banging.. time to wake up the neighbours im afraid...£350 was the price i paid but i know it is cheaper if you buy what hi fi.

There could be a optcal or coax cd input but if you buy this amp you like the films, thats its main feature, a cd digital in would just be a bonus. get over it.

Weakness:

does get hot....so what..!
is fairly big and heavy.....so what...!
lots of sound fields, pointles really... but good as a toy...why not have extras no matter how pointless.

good buy can't go wrong, stop messing around...if you like films go and get it....watch out match your speakers or say good buy to them..quite easy to blow speakers with the power of this system.

I bought a few weeks ago the sony str-db940 just to replace my weak philips fr-975 a/v receiver. When i connected it i thought that the sound quality was baaaaaaaaaad!!! No depth and warm sound anywhere. Then i saw the EQ button and the setup button next to it. When the setup was over the receiver was perfect for my ears at 2ch and in multichannel to. I would recommend it to all of you that you want to buy a desent receiver with good sound quality. I also heard the Sony str-v555es....almost the same but with more inputs and more power....the sound quality the same. Don't go waste money on a more expensive receiver because this one is more powerfull in sound than more epxensive receivers outthere.
Sorry for my bad english.

this is one of the best receivers under 1000.00 period.it has power, its clean.if you read the manual first.you can adjust eq,side wall, low wallhigh/low.cinema a,b,c.etc.for all the people who complained about hiss.not one of you know what you are talking about!of course it has hiss.this receiver has 110 watts x 5 discrete power amplifiers, built into one chassis.you must all have owned 20-50wpc receivers/amps!switch to cd,phono, tape even dvd.turn the volume to 5.the hiss is normal.20wpc/50wpc/110wpc,the more power the more hiss.this receiver is a classic. its dicontinued.its a best buy under $1000.00.please if you are going to review a product.make one with some knowledge first! this is it for me until a new technology comes out.verrrry happy!!

Strength:

Sound, interface, inputs and not ultimatley the looks

Weakness:

Laks a CD optical, remote lagging response

The receiver is loaded with features, strating from the configuration of the speakers and type of walls and ending up to the sound tunning and number of sound fields.
It is a real bargain at this price it runs, and probably now you'll get it even cheaper, since the new series has hit the shelves.

Strength:

home theater

Weakness:

sound quality

Alas, another typical mass market product. Unfortunately all mass market products sound the same (Sony, Kenwood, Yamaha, Panasonic, Pioneer, Denon, JVC, Philips, etc) all sound the same. Why? Because they all use exactly the same parts. If you dont beleive me open them up and look.

The sony's sound quality is down right bad. (Then again if all you want is good stereo audio, you shouldn't be buying a reciever.) Home theater is the only decent use for this machine.

It is interesting that the higher up you go (price-wise) in mass market components the sound doesn't get better. There are just more silly buttons and displays. The tuner is pretty lousy as well even with expensive amplified antennas.

In conclusion if you are on a budget and want home theater try the Onkyo, Adcom, or Parasound receiers. If you want an inexpensive stereo. Listn to the integrated amps from Creek and Cambridge Audio.

This r'cvr ROCKS!!! I've had to move my couch back to be able to enjoy volume level 3..!! I can't find the hiss some people are talking about...Works great for DVD's/ CD's/ DSS music channels....Definitly a r'cvr you can "grow" into...

Weakness:

None to speak of....R'cvr worked beautiful right out of the box...Haven't had time to dial in the remote...

Beware of the "Domino Effect" w/this r'cvr..!!! I upgraded
to the DB940 from my 12 year old SONY Stereo r'cvr. My
BOSE 201's sound the best they've ever did. I then "had"
to go and buy BOSE 501's and a JBL PB12 subwoofer.....
Can't put to words how this r'cvr sounds in some of the
soundfields...Just AWESOME...!!!!
Do yourself a favor and upgrade all your A/V cables and
speaker wire in order to let all the power this baby has
work for you.....This is really a step up from the "consumer" grade SONY r'cvrs you get anywhere....
If you can still find this model...BUY IT!!!!!
