Strength:
-Low cost -Simple -5.1 inputs work very well
Weakness:
-It gets HOT! -Hisses -Lacks DD or DTS decoders I have owned this receiver since 1999, needless to say, it has been overall good. While in my earlier post I gave it a 5, it is a soild 3 overall. It gets extremely hot, while this has not been a problem yet, its hot enough to fry an egg on the top. Sound quality is great until you hit 3/4 of the volume. It then hisses terribly, especially in the rears. This is a great first reciever. But we all must move on to bigger and better things. Similar Products Used: Onkyo TX-DS575X - WOW! This is the BEST you can get for Under $500! Bass is deeper and smoother. Highs are crisp and clear. Doesnt hiss at any volume. It can keep COOL! |

Strength:
Powerful, attractive, easy to use. I give this a 3.5 (4) in overall value / in catagory and a 4 in price -
Weakness:
Hissing, no Digital/DTS, murky dialoge (my fault?) This review is for the STR-DE345 - same as 335 but w/100 watts/channel. I received this as a present about 7 months ago. Although I love playing with stereo equipment, I can't afford the hobby really, so I can't rightfully compare this unit to anything really good. Anyway, I believe this unit only excells at 5.1 & 2ch stereo. The pro-logic isn't clear, particularly the center channel. Dialog is very muted. It's so bad that I purchased an older M&K S-100 center channel speaker (Wow! What a speaker!) - although it certainly helped, still not clear! (If anyones' got any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!) It does get hot & does have excessive (but not intolerable)hiss, and I have noticed the fading in & out in PL that has been refered to. In 5.1 & 2ch. it's got a great sound, powerful, clear way up the volume dial. The remote with this unit is programmable. Overall, for the price I've seen these at, not too bad. Get Dolby Digital/DTS if you can, though. I'm upgrading ASAP. My set-up: Sony A/V STR-DE345 Sony DVD NS-400 Old tade deck & turntable (w/a cheap ($20.00) preamp from a local smaller appliance store) Old Pioneer FS-F9000 Mains (great R&R speakers - not so good for classical & jazz) Old Marantz HLM 312b towers for rears (very clear -but not enough midrange) M&K S-100 center channel (the best piece of equipment I've got- by far) Sony 50watt SAW 6" subwoofer w/ speaker disconnected driving 2 cambridge ensemble 8" subwoofers Similar Products Used: My cousin had an old Marantz that blew this away - probably much more expensive. |

Strength:
Good sounds, Worth the money, awesome pakage
Weakness:
Not enough function on remote Well.. What can i say? i'm a college student and i'm cheap, i was looking around for some good deal on recievers, then i came across this one, well, this didn't bring me 2 much attendion at first, but after i compared it with other ones.. i found out that, it's totally worth the money, i got it for 350 bucks at best buy, it comes with 5 speakers with 50w sub woofer (SA-VE150), HT-DW610 is the pakage code, there are bad sounds, or rather rattle noise comes out form the speakers, or the sub, if u trun it up 2 high when u play a high bass muscis, .. but anyway.. that's the reviews on the speakers, but over all the reciever is very good i'm very pleased by it.. my next room had gotten very mad cause of my 50w bass.. hehe, hey we r in college what do u expect, well guys i'm very pleased by this , and i'm going to keep this baby for a long time. |

Strength:
Great sound and value.
Weakness:
Unit does get quite warm when played loud, in a poor air circulation area, or played with speakers less than 8 ohms. The surround lights and bass light on the rx don't dim and are bright at night. Onlys plays Pro-logic out of the box, but is Dolby Digital ready. Have owned over a year and gets played a lot and no problems so far. I use to repair electronics,so I took my rx apart to look at the build quality. Overall the unit is at least average to above average. The power supply filtering could be made better, however, anyone using this rx is unlikely to be using $1000 dollar speakers and wouldn't notice the difference. |

Strength:
Power, Display and many buttons to adjust sound. Two Front speaker hookups. This is a very good reciever and well worth the price considering I got it open box for only 129$ but still the retail price 199.99 is well worth it. Dolby Pro Logic still performs well but should be overtaken soon by digital. |

Strength:
decent sound in stereo
Weakness:
very bad hiss out of rear speakers, gets very hot Returned this for the Onkyo TX-SV373. While not as powerful if has a much cleaner sound with far less distortion, especially in the rear channels. Also the Onkyo rarely gets hot. Similar Products Used: Onkyo |

Strength:
Price for 5.1 reciever
Weakness:
SONY, Power, Remote Control I really don't know why I bought this reciever since I do not trust Sony (although, I did purchase the extra warranty from Best Buy, which I would do on any Sony product). I guess I assumed it had a DD since it had 5.1, but it doesn't. $200 isn't bad for a reciever with 5.1 inputs i guess, but it's too much for this reciever. Also the 80w x 5 just doesnt turn my crank. Although it's really not THAT bad of a reciever, Im gonna take it back. I'm gonna stick to my motto next time and not buy anything Sony,AIWA(which is the cheap by-product of Sony manufacturing), Kenwood, or JVC. Maybe I'll try Technics, at least they have pretty blue lights. Similar Products Used: Anything Sony |

Strength:
Great sound, affordable, 5.1 inputs, solid
Weakness:
none so far This Sony is great, with murdurous past experinces with Sony, I took a doubtful step when I bought this receiver. I have no idea what all of the other people are talking about when they say it overheats, mine is on all day long and no problems here, and if it does decide to blow up one day that is what the 4 year protection plan is for. Maybe I got the only good one made. The multichannel sound through Sony speakers is spacious and clear, by the way, the Sony SA-WM40 sub is a perfect compliment to the STR-DE335. How I would not recommend this for a gigantic living room, it fills a medium sized one with ease. Sony has redeemed themselfs with me. |
