Strength:

Plenty of clean power for even "reasonably" efficient speakers.
5.1 discrete inputs.
Nice Dolby surround performance, clean sound.
Lots of power for the rear speakers. 80W all round.
Full function remote, with practical controls.

Weakness:

Bass boost feature conveniently available on the remote, but the boost would have been much better if it cut in at a lower frequency.

Some Video in/out but no svideo.

Sub-woofer output level was quite low, compared to others, and required that I leave my powered sub-woofer level at maximum.

This receiver has worked perfectly for me without any problems. It looks good, clean and uncluttered look. There are many options for surround sound effects, all available by remote, although in some modes I couldn't really hear any significant difference. Overall the prologic surround sound effect is superior. For the price this unit had the most features I could find in a quality receiver. I just sold it only because I am want to upgrade to digital, and plan to buy Sony again. If you don't care about built in digital right now, and want to get the most for your money, I very highly recommend this unit!

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

No phono input

From other reviews, it sounds like Sony might have had a QC problem with this unit. Mine has functioned OK, so far. I bought it because HIFI.COM had a decent price and I had already bought a used Sony DVD player which had onboard Dolby 5.1 decoding. It has plenty of power for my listening area; I use a powered sub. It has been accidentally left on overnight with the cabinet door closed several times, but it has not seemed to suffer from the heat. I find it does very well with my LP records, fed through my old Dynaco PAS-3x preamp (the receiver has no phono input) or off of FM, but signals of a digital origin, such as CDs, DVDs or satellite audio programs can sound harsh sometimes. This is my first surround system, and the experience is much better than what I had before. I would recommend it as a starter surround system for the budget-conscious. When I upgrade, I'll sell it with the DVD player.

I got this sony from circuit city with 5 good speakers for $339!And Its Brand spanking new! Hot off the market! A brand new
Pro-logic Dolby Digital ready reiciver! And you know what?
ITS SOUND FREAKING GREAT! Its got good DSP modes. Good Surround
And center volume control. Coaxal FM antanna input. Video inputs and outputs.
Test tones. Different Center modes (i.e. Phantom, Normal mode for small center speaker, Wide mode for larger speakers etc).
I can't be happier with this Reiciver. So if you just have a Tv with just a VCR (or S-VHS VCR)
And plan on geting a DVD later then this reiciver is the bang for your buck.

Strength:

Decent sound, bass/treble/balance controls on front, good 5.1 sound

Weakness:

distortion at 1/4 the volume, crackle in speakers when the volume is turned up, hiss when nothing is on

I bought this receiver two years ago. I wasn't ready to fork down the cash for a Dolby Digital receiver and this had 5.1 inputs so i said what the heck. Setup was fairly easy, hooking up my 5 disc changer and my Mistubishi VCR. It worked fairly well for awhile then about a month ago, there came a hiss. When i turned it on, hiss, when nothing was playing hiss, even during movies hiss. Then there was crackle in my left speaker. At first i thought it was the speaker, so i put a new pair in. Nope, the crackle is still there. To top it off,you can't even put the volum above 1/3 before it starts to have distortion. The first year using it, it was fine, good sound with movies,cd's, and off tv. But now, it distorts, hisses, and crackles. I'm not saying don't buy this, but in my case this is what happened. I cannot say this will happen to all of these 335's, but hey, save your money and buy a DD/DTS receiver. But if you want a 5.1 ready receiver, try this one. I just hope it doesn't have the same fate as mine.

Strength:

cheap

Weakness:

horrible quality

After only 9 months, the thing broke. If it is at anything above 1/3 volume it says protect. I can barely hear any sound when it does work. I tried to use headphones, so I could still get something out of this reciever. I had the same problem.

When I first got it, it sounded nice in stereo only. Pro-logic is terrible, especially the surrounds which have hiss and seem to fade in and out. Sometimes all of the sound came out of the center only.

my setup:
polk audio bookshelf speakers
polk audio center
polk audio sub
monster Z series speaker cable
monster m351 sub interconnect
TMC interconnects for CD and VCR
Panasonic PV-9450 vcr

I want to point out that none of this equipment is bad. Which I believe means 100% of the poor performance of my Home Theater System is the reciever.

Since it DOESN'T WORK after only 9 MONTHS I can't give it any more than 1 star for value and for overall. If it didn't break, I'd give it 3 for value and 2 overall.

Strength:

Very nice sound, great quality, and usfull down to the point controls.

Weakness:

Only weakness i have found was this hissing that comes from the rear speakers(not to big of a deal though)

Great product. I would suggest this reciever to anyone who loves clean CD, tape, or Radio quality. As far as the surround goes, the rear speakers have this hisss in them. You can really only notice it when everything is still, but you can tell it is there. I don't have to big of a problem with it though. If anyone else has this problem or does not have this problem, please e-mail me and tell me if your receiver does or does not have this problem. Other than that, it is Excellent with supurb sound quality and great durability.

Strength:

Price, 5.1 inputs, Powered subwoofer output

Weakness:

Hiss when the volume goes over 1/4 to max. No coax or optical digital outputs.

Recently purchased a new TV, DVD, 5 new speakers and a powered subwoofer. Thought that my existing STR-DE335 could handle the system.. Upon hooking up all the components, there was a annoying his from the speakers when I turned the volume up over 1/4 to max when running my TV through the receiver. Says it handles 80 watts x 5 but certainly isn't constant. The VCR audio through the STR-DE335 was also incredibly poor. I just bought a Pioneer VSX-D710S w/ 100x5 and my hissing problems through the TV and the VCR are gone.
