Well time to followup my reveiw. After being initially please i now have come to this conclusion. THIS RECEIVER IS A PIECE OF JUNK!!!!! Watched my 1st DTS movie last night (Dante's Peak) it couldnt even handle the DTS intro. Protector kept showing up on the display. I had to watch the movie at very low volume levels just to watch it. I felt the receiver after the movie was over, it was hot enough to cook a burger on. PLEASE DO NOT BUT THIS, IT IS GARBAGE. I had traded in an Onkyo TX-DS555 for it because i wanted DTS. Today i am going to buy the TX-DS575 which has it and be gone with this piece of junk forever, i am giving it 1 star because i cannot overemphasize what a piece of junk this is. STAY AWAY!!!!!

Just bought the 835 couple of weeks ago to replace a Sony STR-AV1070, I was dissapointed it's already in the workshop for repair. The volume just went off. The sound was great while it lasted. The receiver was only running at 20% capacity only the Toshiba DVD 2109 and bose AMII10 bose speakers hooked up. My advice to future buyers is purchase the store warranty in case your 835 can't match the 20% capacity. All in all, the DTS and Dolby digital are a plus and inexpensive for $379 but you learn the hard way that cheap is not the way to go.

I had the 835 for the longest I think Its the best reciever that Sony makes for its price.....And just by
mentioning Sony witch is the top of the line....surely this
means that this is one of the best recievers ever and
shouldnt be given a One rateing for anything maybee a three
but not a one......and if u give it a one its probably
because you got the lemon that surely Sony probably only
makes one lemon in a year......Peace

Seems to be alot of bad feeling about this unit amoung the reviews. From what I can tell, if you get a working unit, it'll sound and work
fine. If you get a faulty unit it either wont sound right or will shut
off due to heat.

I'm lucky to have a good unit. Overall I'd give the 835 as a model
5 stars, but Sony and their quality control only get 2 stars

After spending several hours running wire, I finally got my new STRDE835 into operation last night. This unit replaces an earlier Sony Pro Logic receiver, and is intended to provide me with Dolby Digital capability for my DVD player. I purchased the unit for $299 through buyingedge.com, and got an extra $50 rebate from a promotion they have going on, bringing the total cost to $249.
Following NetFlix.com's recommendation to use "Apollo 13" as a Dolby Digital demo, I popped the DVD in as my first test. I expected an incremental improvement over my old Pro Logic system, but I wasn't prepared for what the unit delivered. I found myself holding onto the arms of my couch during the movie's launch sequence! There is definitely a huge difference between Dolby Digital and Pro Logic.

I ran the unit with the volume approximately in the 10 o'clock position for the duration of the movie, and it did get pretty hot. So, I'll make sure to keep it in a well-ventilated spot. Based on earlier reviews I've seen on this site, I'm concerned about the reliability of the unit, but so far so good. I'll post another review if I encounter any difficulty.

For those who are interested, my current configuration is: Sony KV32S40 TV, STRDE835 receiver, DVP-S530D DVD player, Bose 501 Srs. V front speakers, Infinity CC2 center channel speaker, Bose 100 rears and Klipsch KSW10 subwoofer. Once I get back on my feet financially from this purchase, I'd like to replace the fronts with Infinity Reference 5's.

Thanks to Patrick for his feedback on connecting the DVD to the receiver.

I WAS IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW RECEIVER SINCE MY SON TOOK OUT MY YAMAHA WITH A GLASS OF WATER.I DECIDED TO GO FROM DIGITAL READY TO FULL DIGITAL,SO I BEGAN LOOKING AT WHAT WAS OUT THEIR.MORE THAN ONCE I CAME ACROSS A SITE WITH THIS RECEIVER AND WAS AMAZED AT THE PRICE.I OWNED A SONY BEFORE I BOUGHT MY YAMAHA AND WASN'T THAT IMPRESSED WITH IT SO I THOUGHT I'LL PASS.AFTER A WEEK I STILL COULN'T FIND A RECEIVER THAT MET ALL MY NEEDS AND PRICE RANGE,I WAS DESPERATE.I REMEMBERED THE SONY AND WHAT A GREAT PRICE IT WAS AS WELL AS ALL THE EXTRAS IT HAD.AFTER A LITTLE INVESTIGATING I FOUND THAT THIS UNIT HAD SOME PRETTY GOOD REVIEWS.I THOUGHT MAYBY SONY HAD CLEANED UP THEIR ACT A LITTLE.I DECIDED TO GIVE THE RECEIVER A SHOT AND OREDERED IT FROM CRUTCHFIELD AND IN TWO DAYS IT ARRIVED.ONCE I GOT IT OUT OF THE BOX I GAVE IT THE ONCE OVER.THE RECEIVER IT SELF LOOKS MEATY LOTS OF A/V CONECTIONS,CLEAN STYLING, IT LOOKS IMPRESSIVE. HOOKING UP ALL MY STUFF WAS PRETTY EASY,THE LAYOUT IN THE BACK IS NICE.ONCE I HAD EVERY THING HOOKED UP AND IT WAS TIME FOR THE AUDITION I HAD THOUGH I WAS IN FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL,SO I POPPED IN AN AUDIO DVD AND TOOK A LISTEN.FIRST OFF I NOTICED THE SOUND WAS DEFINATLY SONY ,PRETTY NOISY AND NOT VERY DEFINED.BUT I HADN'T SET ANY OF THE ONBOARD STUFF UP YET,SO I PAUSED THE AUDITION TO SET THINGS UP.USERFRIENDLYNESS DOES NOT APPLY TO THIS UNIT, AS WITH ANY SONY .I'VE OWNED THREE SONY RECEIVERS,FOR A SHORT TIME,AND NONE OF THEM GAVE YOU A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT YOU WERE DOING WHEN ADJUSTING THE SOUND PAREMETERS ETC.SOME OF THE AJUSTMENTS ON THIS THING ARE CRAZY,WITH NO INTELIGABLE WRITTEN REFERENCE TO WHAT THEY DO OR HOW TO ADJUST THEM PROPARLY.THE EQ IS THE WORST,TRYING TO FIQURE OUT IF THE 100hz-500hz IN THE BASS AJUSTMENT IS THE CUT OFF OR CROSSOVER SAME GOES FOR THE MID hz AND THE TREMBLE hz.I FINALLY GAVE UP ON THAT AND LEFT IT AT FACTORY DEFAULTS.ONCE I ADJUSTED ALL I COULD ADJUST I STARTED THE DVD AGAIN.IT STILL SOUNDED CRUMMY,IT HAS TO BE THAT EQ,I THOUGHT.SO I TURNED THE EQ OFF.NOW THE SOUND WAS BETTER BUT THE BASS WAS MUDDY AND OVEREMPHISIZED.I TURNED OFF THE BASS BOOST.OK,NOW IT SOUNDS LIKE A TIN CAN.I GAVE UP ON THE MUSIC AND TRIED OUT A DVD MOVIE.TWISTER SHOULD BE A GOOD TEST.I DECIDED NOT TO HAVE THE CINEMA SOUND ON SO I COULD HEAR THE NATURAL 5.1 SOUND.THE OPENING SCENES WILL DEFINATLY TELL YOU WHAT IS GOING ON,AND FROM THE SOUND OF IT I DON'T THINK THE RECEIVER KNEW.THE REAR SPEAKERS SOUNDED GOOD BUT UP FRONT THE CENTER AND MAIN SPEAKERS WERE MESSY.IT WAS HARD TO TELL WHAT WAS GOING ON THE SOUND WAS BOXED TOGETHER,AND THE TRANSITION OF SOUND FROM FRONT TO BACK,SIDE TO SIDE,CORNER TO CORNER,ETC.JUST PLAIN SUCKED.I CLICKED ON THE CINEMA SOUND AND IT DID HELP,BUT IT WAS NOT WHAT I WAS USED TO.THE SOUND COMING FROM MY SUBWOOFER WAS ANYTHING BUT CLEAN,I ALMOST WANTED TO GET A HAMMER AND PUT THE POOR THING OUT OF IT'S MISERY, IT SOUNDED SICK!AT THIS POINT I WAS VERY FRUSTERATED AND ATTEMPTED TO DO SOME MORE ADJUSTING ON TH EQ AND SOUND.AFTER HOURS,(I WASTED MY ENTIRE EVENING ADJUSTING),I FINALLY CAME TO THE REALIZATION THAT IT WAS USELESS ,PROLOGIC- SOUNDED GOOD THAT AT LEAST WORKED,MUSIC- YUK VERY DIRTY SOUNDING AT EVERY POINT AND IT ONLY GETS WORSE AS THE VOLUME GOES UP,DOLBY DIGITAL-24BIT MY ASS!WHEN PLAIN OLD PROLOGIC SOUNDS BETTER SOMETHING IS WRONG.THE NEXT DAY TO MY SURPRISE ANOTHER RECEIVER ARRIVED AT MY DOOR A NAKAMICHI THAT MY WIFE HAD ORDERED FROM AMAZON AT A ALMOST GIVEAWAY PRICE.SHE DIDN'T KNOW I HAD ORDERED THE SONY AND THOUGHT SHE WOULD GET ONE ON HER OWN,SINCE I COULDN'T MAKE UP MY MIND WHEN I WAS LOOKING.I COULDN'T TAKE ANY MORE OF THE SONY SO I UNHOOKED IT AND REPACKED IT PLANING TO SEND IT BACK FIRST THING.RATHER THAN SEND THE NAKAMICHI BACK RIGHT AWAY I THOUGHT I WOULD CHECK IT OUT.IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE MUCH BUT AS FAR AS SOUND GOES IT PUTS THE SONY TO SHAME.ITS NOT DIGITAL,AND IT ONLY HAS PROLOGIC AND SOME OTHER SOUND FIELDS BUT I AM GOING TO KEEP IT UNTIL I CAN FIND ANOTHER YAMAHA,ONKYO,DENON,ANYTHING BUT ANOTHER SONY.THE PRICE IS GOOD BUT THE QUALITY ISN'T AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT SOUND DYNAMICS, PAREMETERS,SOUND REFLECTION AND A HOST OF OTHER TECH. STUFF,BEWARE OF THIS RECEIVER,IT WILL DRIVE YOU MAD TRYING TO SET EACH TO A PLEASENT ENVIRONMENT,IF AT ALL.

Extraordinary value. I bought my receiver through buyingedge.com ... $235 after promotional rebate. A small fan on top of the case takes care of the heat. It sounds great with my Energy Take-5s and 10" subwoofer. Even cable movies sound good with the "Cinema" settings. I give it a rating of 5 for value.
