OK..This is one hell of a unit for the price.I had a Technics with a seperate AC-3 decoder. When I first got the unit I was so excited and impatiant that I didn't take the time to read and make proper hookups.I took a break at started again and took my time.Once I got my speakers ( Mirage OM12 )Klipsh High end center Mirage rears. Infinety BU 2 sub hook up I still had a few problems which were of my own doing.I finally got everthing correct and let me tell you this 100watt machine has given me hrs of enjoyment.Music /Movies sound awesome DTS/DD awesome.Put "Steely Dan" "two against nature" on this and tell me that this is not a great unit.I'm looking into buying the Denon AVR 5800 but this will service until I can sell my brother to afford it.I brought a second unit which Sears was selling for $260 I could not pass it up.I hooked it up to a Bose 3 without the bass module ( my fault ) but the 4Ohms was incorrect so it went into "protection" mode.I got it repaired and was told the Bose was inacurate it was 4hms 8ohms "capatable" the unit blew due to Bose misinformation. The repair man said Bose knows this and will send you a impedence modulator ?????. Well I haven't hooked the second unit up yet. UntilI get other speakers. The unit downstairs is still kicking ass and I can't keep my family away from the house. 50in Hitachi Ultravison) Buy this unit and take your time hooking it up properly.

Strength:

Great features & Sound

Weakness:

Blown up for the 3RD TIME IN THREE MONTHS

Same problem as everybody else. Protection light pops on display and their is no output because the transistors are blown. This is the 3rd time this has happened in roughly 3 months. I loved this receiver, but I am sick of getting it repaired. I DO NOT trust it won't fail again.

I had the receiver out in the open with nothing on top of it. I also do not play it very loud, but it still gets warm. All three times it failed, the protection light came up right after I powered up the receiver (which means it failed when it was cold, not hot).

I am going to see if Sony will give me credit for this Lemon.

Strength:

Many features, Sony name

Weakness:

Not enough power, Very poor bass response

When i bought this reciever I returned it a week later. There isnt enough power on this reciever. It wasnt giving me enough bass with my THX certified speakers. I then went out and Purchased a Denon 3801 and boom a big difference. DONT LET WATTS CONFUSE YOU THEY MEAN NOTHING!!!!

Strength:

Great sound! Lots of power, all the connections you need and soundfields that actually WORK!

Weakness:

If you use thick speakercables I suggest that you use banana plugs or similar producs since the speaker terminals on the back can drive you insane.
I would like a lit remote...

Great value for money!
Excellent if you only have front and center speakers. I used this reciever for about 8 months with only front and center and I still enjoyed rich sound through Sony's "Virtual Semi-Multi Dimention" soundfield.
Now that I have a full 5.1 setup I still use the DSP, only another soundfield. And with great benefit! I switch back to "normal mode" (no soundfield) once in a while only to find the soundstage a bit flat(!?).

I just picked this up a few days ago. Paid $313.75+SH from OneCall. So far, so good. It has good power, lots of features, and a versatile remote. Has a mix ofbinding posts and spring terminals...the binding posts are arranged vertically,
which seems a bit odd and inconvenient. But I have no complaints from stereo or
Pro Logic...the rear channels are noise-free in pro-logic....an improvement over
the STR-de705 I have been using. I haven't been able to test AC3 or DTS yet.

Overall a great value. 5 stars based on price/performance.

I just traded my Kenwood VR-309 and am very impresed with the 835. It does have S-video inputs and for the money (less than what I paid for the 309)you can't beat it. I have read alot of bad reviews on the Sony recievers and hope that this new model has corrected some of those problems. So far I have had no overheating.

Bought an 835 from Best Buys, too, for $379. Had a Sony prologic receiver before this. When I put on a DVD and cranked it up, I was floored! What a difference in Dolby Digital! I also rented a DTS disk (the Jackel) to hear DTS. Sounded great too, but really can't tell the difference.
The receiver is an incredible buy for the money. The sounds fields work well, the digital decoding is completely automatic, making my family able to use the receiver. The sound is outstanding. For a non-audiophile receiver, I don't believe you can do any better.

They say "Sony, the one and only". But it seems that my luck with Sony has been more like "Sony, it's broke". Broken things from the past 7 years include a car stereo, a 10 disc CD changer, 2 walkman CD players, a VCR, and now this amp. I bought it Saturday at Circuit City for 349.99. I plugged it in on Sunday, and within 2 minutes, heard a fizzle, and saw smoke coming for it. From that point on, everything worked on it except the sound. Not good! Anyway, to make a short story long, I took it back Monday, and got another one of the same model. What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment! Better luck with this one, as it seems to be working fine, (knock on wood). Now that I can see (and hear) what is does, it seems to be a great little receiver. Nice features, and lots of inputs for all sorts of stuff. So I'm gonna be nice on the rating.

I bought a Denon a few months ago from Onsale.com. It fizzled the first time I turned it on - never saw a cent from it, da*n it). Ever since then I've been thinking about getting a nice Sony A/V unit to go along with all of the other Sony gear I've bought over the years. Based on feedback from here, I was all set to pick up an STR-DE825 - CameraWorld seem to have great prices (more on that later).
I really had my heart set on an AC3 unit, which meant at least an STR-DE825. I couldn't quiet bring myself to purchase one knowing that it was missing 'S' inputs.

Then I read about the STR-DE835 here and my heart soared again. A better unit, a better price, and 'S' inputs. I'm looking forward to receiving it shortly.

For the record, I paid $329.99, with free UPS ground shipping at CameraWorld. I found them via Google and they had the best prices. Best Buy - headquartered here in Minneapolis - wanted $399 for the same unit, and it's out of stock.

I hope I made the right choice. Thanks for all of the reviews, good and bad. This site is a font of information for me.

Rob.

Wow, what a receiver. I will tell you however that I am a sucker for sony. I upgraded from an old pioneer sx-1700(pretty old but that damn thing sounded great too). It rounded out a complete sony system. The sound modes are little to be desired for, but then again I have never heard one that was outstanding. Setup was pretty easy, AC-3 is outstanding, DTS is even better. My friends used to tell me that there wasn't any difference between DTS and AC-3, well if you can't hear the differnece then you shouldn't even be posting to audio review. My only concern is that the unit runs pretty darn hot! Glad I bought the extended warranty. Other than that a beautiful deal.
