Strength:

Tons of features

Weakness:

None yet... will follow up If I find any

Picked up one of these to go along with my new 36" sony wega, sony dvd and sony vcr.
I like it.
Very simple to hook up. sounds pretty darn good thru my PSB's (not as good as my adcom stuff, but I didn't expect that for a 400.00 receiver.....)
The Remote is purty sweet once ya get the hang of it.
No need for a "light" on the volume knob, unlike some in here I use my EARS to adjust the volume, not my eyes!
I like all the soundfield options... way more than the sherwoood (I'll give the sherwood this though, preamp outs for all channels.... purty damn nice for a 200.00 dd receiver)
Anyway... not a bad deal for the money.....
now... is there anyway we could RATE some of the reviews in here??? wackos!

Strength:

Very good sound quality for the price.

Weakness:

Gets very hot! It blew fuses and transformers after 3 months of use. It is now in the shop being fixed for the second time.

This is my first receiver. I am running a Bose surround sound speaker system with it. Along with a 36" JVC TV and a Toshiba DVD. I haven't gotten the little blue light working on it yet, but hope to in the near future. A "Protector" feature has popped up with me a few times, protecting it from over-heating. Other than the unit getting very hot while using, it is a great receiver for sound quality.

Strength:

Very versitle, remote is great if you are running other sony products, Very user adjustable great accoustic enviroments.

Weakness:

Not as much power as I wanted but plenty for the average user.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! NOT TRUE IN THIS CASE!!!! Great amp for the money (I paid $309) This amp has many features that others in the same price range don't offer. I love the equalizer for all chanels prior amp didn't have that. You can adjust everything on this amp to your listening taste and after some tweeking you have (in your opinion) a great sound! If this is what your price range is get it I love mine.... But If you can afford the STR-DE945 get it more options more power on screen menu 2-way remote control. As for the romte control I love it you just have to take the time to learn it (can be confusing at first but hey the people at sony know we don't want to get out of or chair for any reason and with this remote you don't have to....you just have to take the time to learn it)

Strength:

Great sound, great price, lots of features (too many I think somtimes), its a Sony.

Weakness:

NONE

I got this reciever for christmas and its absolutely incredible. There have been alot of complaints about the remote, I honestly dont think its that bad. I have seen worse. But, that is such a minor weakness its not even worth mentioning.

Let me just tell you, that this thing can move mountains!! The power is amazing. I turn the main volume up a quarter of the way and its too loud. The walls shake. You can adjust every little detail of sound to exactly the way you want. Once you figure out how to use it, its very easy to get the perfect sound. This unit does everything you can think of. I think the only thing it cant do is make coffee.

As far as components. You can hook up anything. CD players, cassette player, phone, vcr, dvd, etc, etc.

Overall a great unit and worth every penny. Sony is noted for high quality and long lasting products. I have a Sony cd player that is 10 years old and still works like the day I took it out of the box. It never had to go in for repairs once!

Strength:

Great Sound, Lots of Optical/S-Video/Component Video inputs, Soundfields are fun

Weakness:

No Subwoofer in normal 2-ch Stereo Mode

My wife bought me this receiver for Christmas, her dad bought me the Sony DVP-C660 5-Disc DVD changer, and I used cash from mom and dad to purchase a Cerwin-Vega 6-speaker surround sound package of speakers. I use a circa 1998 Sony 35'' trinitron TV.

I considered purchasing one of the Sony package systems, but the most popular package included only the STR-DE545, which many have reported problems with. I'm glad I got the 845, mainly because of the generous number of inputs. I have both the DVD and my Satellite DBS system which need S-video inputs, as will my VCR when I upgrade to a HiFi model. Also, if my next TV has component video hookups, I'll be all set. Also, the Sony speakers which come with their package systems are just junk.

I have had no trouble whatsoever hooking up the system or using the remote. One small problem is that the Sony remote will not operate my (Echostar) DBS system, although it will work with DirecTV (Hughes). To be honest, using the Sony remote for other components is tedious, mainly because there just aren't enough buttons on the Sony receiver remote. The Sony remote works the Sony DVD and my crummy Panasonic VCR fine, so the only other remote I need is my DBS remote, which can also operate the TV and the VCR. I found the manual for both the receiver and the remote to be clear and generally helpful.

The sound quality is generally excellent, if a bit bassy (what do you expect with Cerwin-Vega's?). I appreciate the bass much more with CD's, actually. My Bob Marley CD's have a punch on the bassline now that I've never experienced before. I thought the 27 soundfields would be gimmicky (and I guess they are) but some of them are actually worh using. One annoying element is that when the rear speakers are optimized for DVD play, they are much too low for CD play (for my tastes). The subwoofer is no problem since it is powered and has it's own separate volume switch. I know that this receiver and the Cerwin-Vega's are capable of really disturbing the neighbors with either a great DVD or a CD, but I also have found the response and clarity to be excellent at lower volume levels. Of course, you can go halfway up the volume for a party and have clear, undistorted sound tha shakes my 3-story townhouse.

Overall this receiver is an excellent choice if you are trying to keep your entire HT system under $1000. I'm no audiophile, and I would especially recommend you get some better speakers if you consider yourself one. As it was described to me, Cerwin-Vega's are for "college students" not "serious audiophiles". Paradigm or Klipsch speakers would push the total system cost to around $1500, at which point you would wonder about just getting a better receiver.

Strength:

Lots of available power, many sound modes, EQ for tweaking, lots of Optical/S-Video outputs (for future upgrading)

Weakness:

Remote is a bit quirky

Perhaps the best feature is when using Digital Dolby/DTS modes with a DVD player - sounds are crisp and clean. Lots of available power for speakers (100 W per channel --> definately if correct).

EQ feature - excellent if one of your speakers is of lower quality.

Upgrade from Sony STR-DE545 is very noticeable - seemingly more power available (even though they are given the same power ratings), less background hissing noise (until volume is at 2/3's (but, eh, what are you doing listening to it so high? - poor speakers maybe?)) P.S. Canadian reviewer, eh!

Remote may initially impress friends, but is not as practical as others (ie. scroll down to input sound modes, component use, etc.)

Requires a certain amount of time to adjust sound modes to find best sound for CD's or TV viewing - but it is worth it once it is properly tweaked.

Overall, a great receiver with ample power and features.

Highly recommended for anyone wanting to experience digital sound for the first time - high quality (which is worth the extra $$$$ over the STR-DE545)

This is my first receiver and I am just thrilled with it so far. Coupled with my HTD level three surround speakers I believe I have a truly great system for just under a thousand dollars. The remote is not that bad. Whatshisname is right about the volume mark, but hey these are trivial complaints. It has such beautiful DTS and DD sound it will make you cry.
